How ever the selling of the US embassy, by Obama who had he listened to all his demons would have made many changes not at all popular with many US citizens,has brought back many happy memories I had of Grosvenor Square.
My company HQ was around the corner and during my frequent trips there, when meeting up with various friends I had made in those years, was always' meet you in the square' Happy days.

I will repeat, other countries have some dreadful human rights violations, these countries leaders behave in a far worse way than Trump! This is not an opinion, it is a fact.

And fwiw unlike the US we didn’t take until the 60s to enable black citizens (in the Southern States) to vote. I supported the civil rights movement all those years ago, I supported the anti apartheid movement when blacks couldn’t vote at all - so yes, criticising deficiencies in other countries franchise system is absolutely fine, it is not predicated upon the perfection of ones own country. And again fwiw I can simultaneously manage to criticise other countries at the same time as my own

I wouldn’t have voted for him but I think it’s about the relationship between our two countries that is more important than the man.

He is used to protesters, it wouldn’t bother him how many were out, it would bother him a lot more if he was ignored. I don’t want to see protesters, it’s embarrassing to our country, we should be more dignified, because it wouldn’t be peaceful, it would be the violent anarchists that would take the protesters over, police could get injured as well as peaceful protesters. We are better than that.

I wonder why the protesters weren’t out when the likes of the Saudi head visited, they rolled out the red carpet, politicians fawned over him, it was sickening. And there have been others far worse than Trump that have been welcomed.

I don’t know that he’s going to bother with trade negotiations being so far in the future anyway.

I repeat, I listed a number of human rights violations that OCCUR in other countries, I also listed a number of countries where human rights violations OCCUR.

I did not at any time state that nobody cares about those violations. I implied these violations are worse (in my opinion) than anything Trump has ever either said or done!

We don't have any 'special relationship' with the US. They have used our position as a key member of the EU since the 1970s to represent their viewpoint in Europe. That's all.

There is a familial relationship, as there is with most of the English speaking 'former colonies' but, like them, the US doesn't regard us as anything special. And once we're out of the EU we'll be even less important to them.

Possibly the previous poster who claimed there are “worse leaders in the world whom nobody protests about” care to name a worse leader that no one protests about? As for having “closer ties with the US than anywhere else “ I would suggest we have closer ties with many other countries - Ireland, France ( conquered by them in 1066) Germany,( Royal family) Australia, Canada, New Zealand to name but a few. So many sweeping generalisations here.

Until we get democracy right in this country, I hardly think we can complain about another country's democracy! I'm glad he's not coming, can't stand the fellow, but I think he's a dangerous man to cross. I think it is a mistake to alienate him but I also think we shouldn't jump into bed with him. A cordial, diplomatic relationship (if we can manage it) would be the best way forward until he fouls up and is removed.

maryeliza please re-read my original post, I did not in any way say it imply that Trump had won on the popular vote. I think you are mixing me up with someone else. I listed a number of violations of human rights that occur in other countries. I repeat, I understand that Clinton received more votes, but fewer states, than Trump did. As both myself and lemongrove clearly stated, if the Americans wish to change the way their voted are counted, then it up to them to do it!

As an aside, I think your reply/justification was bordering on rude.

And plenty protested when the Chinese leader came - I think the turning the back method was used. The policing was very tight - banners were taken away iirc and there were lots of no go areas. But either way, it’s irrelevant what anyone did re other leaders - Trump was going to come and people were going to protest. So???

Yes I’m aware he’s the POTUS lemon and that they would have to change the voting system not us - who knew? There are plenty of Americans who think the current system is unfair - ask the average Californian. Your post was extremely patronising - people on here who would choose to turn out to protest are NOT doing it because they don’t like him - I don’t like strawberry ice cream - but for well thought out reasons.

maddy I’ll overlook and ignore any points you make that I choose to. I was just correcting the impression you gave that he had won on the popular vote.

All this ‘ he didn’t get the majority ‘ stuff hardly matters, there were two choices and he won and is the POTUS.
The US would have to change the way they vote and the votes are counted, if they ( not us) want to.

Fotunately it’s a free country here ( as is the US) so protest if you want to, but ask yourself exactly what you are protesting about.

maryeliza I did not say I either like, approve of, or would have voted for Trump. Millions of Americans did vote for him, but I am fully aware of the fact that Clinton got more votes, but fewer states, than Trump. It is up to the Americans to sort out their voting system if they wish to, not us!
However, you have completely overlooked and ignored the points I did make, that is that Trump is the other poster's 'wrongest' leader she can think of.
I think there are far worse leaders in the world who we should be more concerned about. Only a few people make any protest about these other leaders, they seem to be tolerated. Maybe protests about Trump are socially acceptable because in actual fact, America will ignore them and do nothing. An easy target, doubtless with no repercussions.
There are far worse leaders in the world than Trump, and few people are interested in protesting about them, that is my point.

maddy he did not get the majority of bites - HC won the popular vote by about 3m I think. He won through the electoral college system which is hugely flawed in terms of proportionate fairness
