Continuity of previous thread.

It is interesting to know that the Tories have chosen the environment as one of the focuses in order to try and tackle the young vote.

This morning I read that this failing government (shades of Trumpgrin is refusing to sign up to the EUs plan to tackle plastic waste.

A prime example f this government shooting itself in the foot on a number of levels.

There are enough Tories now to trigger a ballot against May.

Today’s news apart from Brexit

Very little!

Damien Green is defending the charge of sexual harassment, and industrial quantities of pornography on his work computer.
52 MPs -a small rump are trying to run the Tory party
Mays choice of person to head the charities watchdog has recieved an unprecedented rejection by MPs -the link is a list of those attempting a hard right coup.

The government (DWP) has gone to court to try to block future benefit appeals. They have lost a number of appeals by people using the HRA (this government’s nemeses ).

Nor surprising that many Tories want to rid this country of the HRA.

One of the most worrying developments and something that does not appear to be getting the coverage it deserves is Mays total capitulation to the DUP, and the fact that there isn’t a single representative for a NI Catholic in Westminster.

Direct rule means rule by the DUP. Th why have totally trashed the GFA, I am surprised at the restraint being shown to date by the disenfranchised.

Today’s news on the government apart from Brexit.

1. Our grandchildren and children born since 1981 are financially the WORST IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD, except Greece.
Why -
a) pay squeeze - millennials earn 13% less than born at 1970 did as the same stage of life.
The pay squeeze of the young is twice as hard as those 50 and above.
b) home ownership has tumbled. It is half the rate of boomers at the same age.
c) on the plus side, unemployment is low amongst the young, but due to a rise in atypical working, such as zero hours contracts and self employment.
d) job mobility has fallen significantly.

2. Ben Bradley has been caught lying as he gets caught up in the excitement of the latest fun game of trying to trash Corbyn, as the result of the panic over a future election result.
Bradley is not without controversy. He seems to support Malthus theory in his statsment that the unemployed ought to be encouraged to have vasectomies.

3.May has admitted that education is failing our children, but then goes on to state that there will be no new money. There is to be a review on higher education fees, which is not expected to report for at least a year. That’s been nicely kicked down the road then.

Brilliant.
It will not happen, of course, once we have a trade deal with the US.
Don't we have one of those anyway? Otherwise how would we have KFC or Starbucks, etc.?

“The members of the Long Parliament were in agreement over what they would not have but it was a different matter when it came to determining what they would have.”

How long have we got?

"It also advocates tearing up the EU’s “precautionary principle”, under which traders have to prove something is safe before it is sold, rather than waiting for it to be proved unsafe. The project will include two rounds of mock trade negotiations among figures from the 10 groups. The document even claims that a civil servant from Liam Fox’s department for international trade will attend. The department said it had never heard of the initiative and had not received an invitation.

Greenpeace UK’s policy director Dr Doug Parr said: “This network of secretive pressure groups is trying to hijack US-UK trade talks to impose its anti-regulation agenda. They want a free-for-all Brexit that waters down rules on food safety, animal welfare and nature protection. It’s the exact opposite of the green vision promised by Theresa May.”

A spokesperson for the IFT said the plan was an internal document not meant for public consumption. She said it was not a solely “libertarian” campaign, as some of the thinktanks involved were conservative."

Not meant for public consumption, eh?

This is what they've been planning all along. Lucky meat eaters will be able to buy cheaper meat from the US, etc.

whitewave Sun 18-Feb-18 15:13:10

I think they are in total denial. All they can do is repeat “You lost, get over it” and yet there is no evidence that there is any intelligent thought behind potential planning at all, nor is there any recognition of or intention of taking into account half of the nation’s “will”.

varian Sun 18-Feb-18 15:05:44

Why can the brexiteers just not admit that if they get their way we will never again be as close to the EU as we are now, we will never get such a good deal outside the EU as we have as members, we will have to spend far more money on form filling and bureaucracy and we will never regain our place in the world?

If it takes too long and they don't waken up to the damage they have done until we have left and become a second rate nation, and then we try to rejoin the EU, we will never regain all the advantages of our present membership.

What on earth was May about in her speech on security??

Talk about putting the cart before the horse, accusing the EU of being too difficult and ideological, and nothing has yet been agreed on Brexit.

The one thing that I think is certain, is that the most rabid right winger is keen on is security, and really is something that should be totally straightforward, and yet, and yet......May manages to put a spanner in the works with her ridiculous speech.

Is there anything this government does that doesn’t turn to dust?

durhamjen Sat 17-Feb-18 21:02:31

I read a post just now calling the DUP DUPists. Sounds about right.
Mind, May is joining them.

May has such a nerve, telling the EU off for doctrine and ideology. What does she think she represents?

Interesting idea.

It suits the DUP doesn’t it? They never agreed with the GFA, so a hard border will suit them.

The kingmakers are having everything their own way.

Chickens coming home to roost?
Lack of foresight?
Short term gain?

So the Irish can’t agree to joint rule. Westminster will have to take it back to London. How is that going to work with the DUP having the government in hock?

It isn’t going to work is it?

durhamjen Tue 13-Feb-18 20:42:40

Everybody else's lack of belief in May and the pretenders.
Looks like we are stuck with her unless she goes for a quick election again.

More homeless than the Grenfell survivors.
What did May say in her last party political broadcast?

leftfootforward.org/2018/02/a-new-tory-welfare-cut-could-be-about-to-make-thousands-of-vulnerable-people-homeless/

She certainly didn't broadcast this.
