If he’d been waking me up like that for years I would have shot him by now!
Yes he is a serving soldier and will have other duties. They probably do it on a rota basis. They have plenty to choose from.

I never knew about it.
Could be because I couldn't care less!

Are we supposed to get indignant about this? I thought this had been well known for years

And he probably wakes up some other folk while he's at it

Thought that was common knowledge

He does a wee bit more than just wake the queen up, seeing as he's a serving soldier...

I can't get indignant about a piper getting 15 minutes extra practice on a morning...

And I knew all about it, have done for years and years. I'm quite surprised that you seem to thinks it's 'news'. I thought most people knew about it. I believe the custom was initiated but that fervent Scotsphile, Queen Victoria.

You'll never guess so I'll tell you. She is woken every morning by a piper who plays for 15 minutes. The piper is a Pipe Major paid by the British army and seconded to the Royal Household. A Pipe Major isn't technically a major but a sergeant so looking at the pay scale for 2017/18 last year the Pipe Major cost £33490 to £47895 depending on where he is on the scale.
