Labour shifts to back a customs union with EU after Brexit (Sky News)

news.sky.com/story/labour-shifts-to-back-a-customs-union-with-eu-after-brexit-11267193

Sir Keir Starmer Labours Shadow Brexit secretary said Labour had "unanimously" agreed at a meeting last week to "develop" their Brexit policy.

He said: "It's a customs union… there's going to have to be a new agreement, but will it do the work of the current customs union? Yes, that's the intention."

Sir Keir admitted Labour's position means it will have to be "negotiated" as to who is in control of Britain's trade policy after Brexit.

He said: "We will have to have a say but the real point is - because we all want trade agreements, we all want more trade agreements - are we more likely to get them if we do it jointly with the EU or on our own?

From Labour Leave. (below) The Andrew Marr interview.

Marr: After we leave, who will be in charge of trade policy?

Starmer: That will have to be negotiated.

"Keir_Starmer confirms a Labour government would sell out the British public on Brexit and tie us into a protectionist Customs Union with the EU. Shameful!"

"On leaving the single market and customs union being like "giving up a three course meal for a promise of a packet of crisps in the future". I once caught the night bus with someone who had a packet of Monster Munch which lasted about an hour. It was like witnessing a miracle."

David Allen Green.

Because Corbyn's Brexit team have been having reasonable discussions with Barnier and others in the EU for quite a time?
They haven't been threatening the EU like May and team.

lemongrove Tue 27-Feb-18 16:35:40

What makes Corbyn think that Barnier and others would do what he wants?
They wouldn't.

lemongrove Tue 27-Feb-18 16:31:03

I will pm you Bridgeit ?

lemongrove Tue 27-Feb-18 16:25:10

GGM2 you posted Corbyn’s own words just yesterday:
‘ the EU is not the source of all enlightenment and Leaving does not spell doom’.So yes, he did say that.

Bridgeit Tue 27-Feb-18 16:15:54

Yes I know & apologies for that, but as this has happened more than once & I only go on couple of threads I just wondered if it is just me. Don’t worry I won’t comment further on here ladies.

More fool them for not being intelligent enough to see what a buffoon he is then Tegan. He really is a very silly man.

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 16:12:51

I’m not sure that is an appropriate question to ask on a thread bridgeit it could lead to a lot of unpleasantness

day6 did you read the Dan Roberts article? I think you might find that illuminating

Bridgeit Tue 27-Feb-18 14:47:46

Sounds similar to Gransnetting

Tegan2 Tue 27-Feb-18 13:58:00

Because, alas, if you say things in a way that makes [some]people think you know what you're talking about, they believe you. Especially when half the newspapers in this country back you up....

Boris Johnson comparing the Irish border to the London congestion charge zone not going down well in Ireland.

I'm not surprised. I am beginning to wonder why anyone thought he was intelligent.

By David Scullion.
"Making his pitch in front of a driverless car, Corbyn said Labour would negotiate “a new comprehensive UK-EU customs union” to prevent tariffs and a hard border in Northern Ireland. "

"In other words, Labour’s Britain would be a passenger, letting the likes of Jean-Claude Juncker and Michel Barnier drive our policy on trade. But Corbyn also said Labour wouldn’t accept a deal that left the UK “a passive recipient of rules”. He said any deal struck by Labour would need to ensure the UK has a say in future trade deals."

Oh well good luck with that Jezza! grin You really think you could get Barnier and Juncker to agree to a bespoke 'have your cake and eat it' deal?

As has been pointed out, most Remainers see a victory - BUT they seem to forget Corbyn won't be doing the negotiating.

He can promise his drooling admirers the moon, but it's only words. (He likes to promise such a lot, doesn't he? It's going to be soooo costly should he ever become PM. Gird your loins taxpayers. grin)

The driver-less cars were a good backdrop for him as he spoke yesterday. He would be happy to allow the EU to remain steering the UK just where it wants. angry

One can only hope - very hard. The DUP must be deliriously happy at the thought.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 27-Feb-18 13:06:05

I have wondered it that could happen whitewave but I am not sure it could ... could it, would it?

Anniebach Tue 27-Feb-18 13:03:05

Do they not mean support Corbyn as he has always supported the IRA?

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 13:01:57

That’s Fox’s speech over with then, nothing to see so let’s move on.

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 13:00:16

This is pretty extraordinary.

The Irish leader is saying that Sinn Fein should take their seats in Westminster to support labour and speak for their constituents and Ireland.

mostlyharmless Tue 27-Feb-18 12:54:33

Oh dear Liam Fox!
I see Open Britain is distributing packets of crisps outside the venue.

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 12:42:05

Oh he’s just said how successful the EU -South Korea agreement has been confused

He obviously thinks free trade is a GOOD THING

He obviously hasn’t listened to Pascal Lamy.

whitewave Tue 27-Feb-18 12:36:26

Fox making his speech.

Nothing interesting yet.

mostlyharmless Tue 27-Feb-18 12:21:04

Daily Politics Norman Smith being rather more anti Brexit today about the possibilities of free trade deals outside the EU.
Martin Donnelly is on giving his leaving EU is “like giving up a full three course meal on the promise of a packet of crisps” comments.
Norman Smith says it's looking more like “we need a fairy godmother” to achieve good trade deals.
A bit of realism about Brexit perhap?

durhamjen Tue 27-Feb-18 11:59:26

"Brexit supporters are regularly using actual or perceived good news or the absence of bad news to argue that those who warned against Brexit got it all wrong. It means stating the obvious, but there is something you apparently just can’t repeat often enough these days: Brexit has not yet happened. Britain is still in the EU. It should not surprise anyone that the country does not yet feel the ramifications of not being a member."
