Russian spy attempted murder - what should the UK do?

Just listened to a radio piece on this awful attack on the Russian spy and his daughter in which 21 people were affected. one suggestion why these attacks are carried out in the UK was that the response of the UK in the past e.g. Litvinyenko has been weak, so whoever carries out such attacks has no fear of comeback. What can the UK do? Boycott the World Cup?

All political parties need donations to keep them going, as the Conservatives don’t have the money from unions it has to come from private donors.

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 18:58:14

Same with the Lib Dems.

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 18:58:42

Wasn't shoeshopping with Theresa when she was just home secretary, mostlyharmless?

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 19:00:13

Money for politcal parties is supposed to be donated by people who can vote in this country, not by people who have stolen money from their own country.

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 19:03:12

Why are you happy that your party is being subsidised by friends of Putin?

Fennel Sun 18-Mar-18 19:04:04

Exactly Maizie.
When I was an active member of the LP, '70s to '80s, we were always short of funds. Could hardly afford to rent a small building for meetings etc. We used to meet at eachothers houses before that. Mine included. Our main source of funding came from the Unions. Apart from a few welcome local businessmen.
Whereas the Tories had big luxurious premises, funded by donations from the wealthy upper classes.

Funding the Tory party does not stand up to scrutiny, but really no one will be surprised would they?

Sleeze seems to always be in the background.

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 19:05:19

Some Russians are now British citizens durhamjen and btw there are wealthy Russians here who have simply offended Putin that is a far cry from ‘stealing money’ so don’t tar all Russians, even wealthy Russians with the same brush, you wouldn’t do it with any other nation.

whitewave Sun 18-Mar-18 19:10:12

Imagine the posts if it was found that the Russians were donating to the Labour Party?
There would be steam coming out of their ears

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 19:10:29

It is not my ‘Party’ dj I am not a member of any political party.
As for ‘funding the Tory Party doesn’t stand up to scrutiny’
whitewave that is your own opinion, and what facts are there to show that they have taken illegal funds from someone?Ditto for the Lib Dems ( does it matter where their money comes from also?)
Are all donations to the Labour Party above board? If yes, and there are rules about these things, then I expect all other parties to be the same.

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 19:13:27

Hardly ww it is the Russian State that is at fault, not the Russian people, especially the many enemies of Putin who have settled there. In fact, I find all this Russian bashing quite perplexing, given that there is usually so much sympathy for any foreign people who have made Britain their home.

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 19:16:54

You do keep telling us how well May is doing, lemon, so not surprising we think of it as your party.

Same here, Fennel; our house one meeting, the neighbour's the next. It saved on babysitting, too.

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 19:20:24

I didn’t think she was doing well during the last GE and said so!
I do think she is dealing with everything else since then well though, especially as it has been one thing after another to deal with.So hard to imagine why anyone would want to be PM.

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 19:21:48

Back to Russian spies and poisonings, anyone?

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 19:25:41

There you are. Definitely sounds like your party.

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 19:27:03

No point in going back to the Russian spy until there is more news. That will not happen until tomorrow's meeting.

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 19:28:39

No more nosy ‘fishing’ dj ??????

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 20:18:47

Stop saying how fantastically well May is doing, then.
I really don't need to fish.

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 22:30:54

I don’t think the word fantastically was used dj grin

MaizieD Sun 18-Mar-18 22:40:37

especially the many enemies of Putin who have settled there

I don't think that many of the Russian oligarchs are enemies of Putin. They wouldn't be commuting on a regular basis between Russia and the EU if they were (see the extract below)

A significant number of Russian oligarchs have bought homes in upmarket sections of London in the United Kingdom, which has been dubbed "Moscow on Thames."

[30] Some, like Leonard Blavatnik, Eugene Shvidler, Alexander Knaster, Konstantin Kagalovsky and Abram Reznikov, are expatriates, having taken permanent residency in London. This community has led to journalists calling the city "Londongrad". Most own homes in both countries as well as property and have acquired controlling interests in major European companies. They commute on a regular basis between the EU and Russia; in many cases their families reside in London, with their children attending school there. In 2007 Abram Reznikov bought one of Spain's mega recycling companies, Alamak Espana Trade SL, while Roman Abramovich bought the English football club, Chelsea F.C., in 2003, and has spent record amounts on players' salaries.[31]

The whole article is interesting.

I have no problem with Russians making their home in the UK. I have no problem with any people from any country making their home in the UK.

lemongrove Sun 18-Mar-18 22:51:35

Some are, and some are not MaizieD but glad to hear you have no problem with them being here.

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 22:52:34

As Ian Blackford said on Peston, the problem is the dirty Russian money that comes in to the country and is then used to set up companies in tax havens.
The UK is the tax haven capital of the world.

durhamjen Sun 18-Mar-18 23:04:38

It was said thaat 24% of mansions bought by offshore trusts are Russian-owned.
I have a problem with that.
I also have a problem with this.

What do you think Boris is trying to do? Why does he want to ratchet up the pressure on Russia by accusing them of lying?
What is he trying to deflect from?
