This is certainly an eye opener.

Has anyone been following the story? Channel 4 News did an excellent exposé.

Some people aren’t happy if they don’t have something to be constantly outraged by.

We discussed psychological profiling and targeted adverts around the time of the last General Election. I think we could do with looking at it again now that the extent of the practice is becoming clear.

This is not outrage. This is very deep concern about the undermining of our democracy; the essence of which must surely be that the same information is available to everyone.

This twitter thread reminds us of concerns which were expressed when we last discussed the topic.

This. for me, is the key statement. I would hope that other people agree with me.

What is democracy, and how does it work? Well, in the ideal world every single voter has access to the exact same information from each "side", and makes a choice accordingly. The more we move away from this the more fragile democracy gets.

Not just Toris, but Brexit.

durhamjen Thu 22-Mar-18 16:22:33

My laptop doesn't like "Tories" either.

Nice, whitewave

I wonder why they're all so desperate to deny they used CA?

whitewave Thu 22-Mar-18 16:41:33

Bit more evidence - gradually building up

No doubt there, then, whitewave.
I wonder why they had to remove it.
Not ashamed or embarrassed, are they?
They seem to siggest that there are people who are even better at doing what CA do, one with a 90% success rate, who will be going through his files as we write.

NotTooOld Thu 22-Mar-18 17:28:05

Whitewave - thanks for that. Very interesting indeed.

Baggs Thu 22-Mar-18 17:46:35

Access to written BBC News online does not require a licence, only watching programmes does.

On Bannons advice CA used self destruct emails in order to cover its tracts.

This post is up thread. I said, tongue in cheek, that I liked the idea of self-destructing emails. HQ deems that outwith forum guidelines. I've asked them to explain why.

The other deletion was entirely expected and reasonable even though it was in response to equal rudeness.

Just a question that someone might be able to answer

Are we completely anonymised on Facebook gransnet?

I never post on Facebook, but have no say in the matter in relation to GN, which I guess I should have been aware of on joining, but in truth didn’t appreciate it at the time.

petra Thu 22-Mar-18 18:34:15

baggs
I thought it was a very reasonable responce, worthy of a chuckle grin

Baggs Thu 22-Mar-18 18:40:32

Thanks, petra wink. A lady is never rude except on purpose, said somebody famous.

Thread diversion:

TV licence is for watching any live TV channel, not just the BBC. That includes watching it via your computer.. You don't need a licence if you don't watch live TV.

I don't understand how people think that not paying their TV licence is somehow a protest against the BBC. It's a licence fro the receiving equipment. Like the wireless licence used to be..

OK, Stand Easy. Back to thread now.

" It doesn’t matter what device you use. If you watch or record live TV programmes on any channel, or download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer, you need to be covered by a TV Licence. This includes:

TV sets (including smart TVs)
DVD, Blu-ray and VHS recorders
Laptops and desktop computers
Tablets, mobile phones and other portable devices
Digital boxes or PVRs (such as Sky, Virgin Media or BT TV)
Games consoles
Media streaming devices (such as Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku and Now TV)
Freeview, Freesat or YouView"

Baggs Thu 22-Mar-18 18:59:22

Yes, maiz, I know. I don't watch any TV channels on anything at my home address. Reading news on the BBC website is not watching telly.

^Are we completely anonymised on Facebook gransnet?
whitewave all the FB page does is give a link to certain threads, showing a 'picture posed by models' which GNHQ post on FB which they think are interesting. I doubt the political threads make the grade grin!
So - you click on the link and are brought here.

People on the FB site can comment underneath and presumably use their own names. But your comments on any particular thread don't appear there.

However - if you enter competitions, then GN have your real name and address hmm - are they kept or deleted after you win (or don't win as is normally the case)?

Jalima1108 Thu 22-Mar-18 19:15:40

oh dear, what happened there? should have italicised your comment and written your username as whitewave
sorry

Jalima1108 Thu 22-Mar-18 19:17:24

Are you typing self-destruct posts Baggs?

Missed them unfortunately sad

Jalima1108 Thu 22-Mar-18 19:23:39

Just checked whitewave and the only political post I can see on there is this one (am I allowed to re-post it here?):

I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I'm developing a bit of a following for my blog articles among regular forum-users... on Gransnet?

Yes. Gransnet.

For very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very obvious reasons, I'm not a member of their forum, and I'm not entirely sure how they stumbled upon me

There seems to a rumour circulating among them that I sometimes write for The Guardian. Well no, I don't. Never have done, very much doubt I ever will.

But... well... er... nice to be appreciated.

Have you heard of him? Well, me neither and he does sound a tad ageist.
So I won't bother to read any links with his name attached to them, whoever is posting them.

How funny.
