This is certainly an eye opener.

Has anyone been following the story? Channel 4 News did an excellent exposé.

Nobody seems have quite got the point of what is happening here.

Because nothing is really happening ww. The ICO are waiting for a warrant.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry told HuffPost: “Let us be clear what this reveals: the company that - according to the accounts we have seen, and by the videotaped admission of their own former boss - are alleged to have used dubiously-acquired Facebook data to manipulate the outcome of the US Presidential election, were invited three months later to brief government officials on the lessons to be learned from their activities.

“That raises three very basic questions: what on earth did the Foreign Office feel they had to learn from that briefing; was taxpayers’ money used to pay for that briefing; and were any Foreign Office ministers aware that it was taking place, or subsequently informed of the findings? We will be demanding answers to those questions immediately.”

The Wilton Park revelation came as Downing Street revealed that the Foreign Office had had communications contract with SCL Group since 2008. The Home Office and the Ministry of Defence had also signed contracts with the firm, but both have since expired.

Sounds like it is people at Cambridge Analytica who are responsible.

On Bannons advice CA used self destruct emails in order to cover its tracts.

durhamjen Wed 21-Mar-18 21:36:31

There seemed to be a lot of paperwork being taken out of their offices, considering it was all about emails and facebook.

whitewave Wed 21-Mar-18 21:42:22

Apparently there is boxes and boxes of it. Computers perhaps?

I wonder if there will be anything left by the time the warrant is eventually issued.

Making a mockery of the law isn’t it, and someone must be complicit in aiding them with the delay in the warrants issue.

durhamjen Wed 21-Mar-18 21:53:44

I presume somebody tracked the vans taking the boxes away.
It might be easier to get the boxes if they have been split up.

Primrose65 Wed 21-Mar-18 21:55:09

How long do ICO warrants usually take then ww?

Primrose65 Wed 21-Mar-18 21:58:37

Were they boxes belonging to CA or another company in the same building?

This thread is starting to feel like the live coverage of OJ driving down the freeway. I'm off to stock up on tinfoil before there's a national shortage.

durhamjen Wed 21-Mar-18 22:04:48

Only 60 posts, primrose.
You could just stay off if you are worried about that. I am more worried about what CA have been doing to affect our democratic rights.
Are you not bothered about that?

MissAdventure Wed 21-Mar-18 22:09:48

Zuckerberg has made a statement.

Jon Snow expressing some surprise at the length of time it's taking for the ICO to get a warrant

Some people aren’t happy if they don’t have something to be constantly outraged by.
As baggs said earlier, must make life exhausting.
If there has been wrongdoing it will be punished.

Primrose65 Wed 21-Mar-18 22:53:53

Does anyone know if the warrant requested by the ICO covers internal servers, data held on any server within the EU or if it's global and covers everything held on cloud servers anywhere?

Just thinking that the ICO may not have authority to search outside of the EU and the data could be held anywhere in the world.

I've tried to find out, but can't. Everyone seems to be assuming that the data is on machines in their building. It's much more likely to be out in the cloud somewhere.

durhamjen Wed 21-Mar-18 23:02:40

How can you expect any of us to know if you can't find out.
I thought it was covered in your course.

Primrose65 Wed 21-Mar-18 23:20:48

Studying behavioural economics doesn't cover data raids and legal warrants. Other posters know more about something that I do or have heard stuff mentioned and discussed so I thought it was worth an ask. There's no need to be rude about it.

whitewave Thu 22-Mar-18 07:25:22

Warrants can be got within an hour - day or night. There is always a judge on hand, that is why this is looking so wrong.

whitewave Thu 22-Mar-18 07:26:49

You think that this situation hasn’t happened before? Of course or has.

whitewave Thu 22-Mar-18 08:26:57

Listened to Zuckerman this morning. He will welcome more government control which will certainly be something to consider.

I wonder how many Facebook users gave permission tonCambridge Analytica to use their data as they did?
