GillT57 well tough we are leaving the EU whether you want to or not.

maryeliza54 Sat 24-Mar-18 23:47:33

Aahhh the patriotic DM - remind me again where its owners live and how much they pay in UK taxes.

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 23:41:07

Exactly chewwy .

What a load of tosh gerrispringer . Maybe they are doing the work for no profit at all. Maybe they are having a huge laugh at our expense. Maybe they will hold us to random in the future, maybe they are being subsidised by their government (ooops I don’t think that’s a maybe anymore) maybe they can’t do it for the price quoted, maybe they’re outsourcing to Poland, maybe..........

GillT57 Sat 24-Mar-18 22:54:45

I will say this again; I don't care what colour my passport is. I don't want to leave the EU, I don't want to spend hours in the aliens queue at the airport. I don't give a flying fig who prints the passports. I am sick of the hysteria and hypocrisy.

Gerispringer Sat 24-Mar-18 22:23:20

maybe the reason the foreign company is cheapest because they don’t pay all the fat cat bosses huge salaries and bonuses who knows, I don’t , but it maybe useful if we had all the information before we make assumptions based on guesswork. If the Guardian had started a petition for the railways to be renationalised I wonder if DM readers would be signing up as a patriotic duty. Hmm don’t think so.

Chewbacca Sat 24-Mar-18 21:46:21

No gillybob because the main focus seems to be that the petition was started by the DM and is therefore automatically to be discredited. confused

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 21:05:41

Oh I give up .... it’s almost becoming laughable now.

Has anyone asked themselves HOW they came out so much cheaper ?

Deedaa Sat 24-Mar-18 21:03:18

I thought that Brexit meant we were going to rely on market forces rather than being limited by EU rules and regulations. If market forces mean that passports produced in a foreign country are cheaper that's just how it is.

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 20:58:06

You’re wasting your time Oldwoman because OldMeg doesn’t explain her comments . She just throws them out and refuses to explain .

OldMeg Sat 24-Mar-18 20:53:15

It’s not that the DM started this petition. It’s far more than that. But if we have to explain why, then it’s pointless.

OldMeg Sat 24-Mar-18 20:51:08

In the unlikely event of the Guardian starting such a petition I think you mean.

Oldwoman70 Sat 24-Mar-18 20:19:37

I wonder what the comments would be if the petition had been started by the Guardian

jura2 Sat 24-Mar-18 20:04:14

surely they have to for the same quality and specifications. Grenfell Tower cladding was clearly, and fraudulently, flammable - and this was more about FRAUD- very likely knowingly so...

Nobody will die due to colour of bl**dy passports or where they are made sad

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 20:03:37

And the reason they were the cheapest tender was ????

MaizieD Sat 24-Mar-18 20:01:50

And I'll remind you all again; they would have had to have done the same under WTO rules

jura2 Sat 24-Mar-18 19:59:59

The comparison is .... can't quite find the words, sorry.

Iam64 Sat 24-Mar-18 19:44:23

It isn't about trying to keep jobs in the UK, much as I'd support that. It's about governments and public services always having to go for the cheapest tender. Grenfell anybody?

paddyann Sat 24-Mar-18 19:43:20

and relax ,it appears the printer of the UK passports has a certain Mr George Osborne on its board ...surely you'll all be happy now ?

jura2 Sat 24-Mar-18 19:32:36

starts with a 'j'

petra Sat 24-Mar-18 19:12:52

Welshwife
5 years in Bulgaria and spending a lot of time in Romania as we are involved with some orphanages there.
It was bad for some companies when they joined the eu as an awful lot of skilled people left for Western Europe.
And no, things haven't changed unless you count the men in sunglasses with no necks and shiny suits getting richer on our eu money.
The corruption is still off the scale: although I have to say it works both ways when you want something done wink

Chewbacca Sat 24-Mar-18 18:44:38

The phrase "can't see the woods for the trees" comes to mind Oldwoman 70!

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 18:35:07

I doubt whether De La Rue’s passports would be superior . They developed the security that is now used worldwide so presumably by the French, Dutch etc. too.

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 18:33:04

I knew that would be the case when the thread started Oldwonan crazy innit ?

Gerispringer Sat 24-Mar-18 18:30:35

I agree if De La Rue's passports are a superior product and worth the money we should know. If the French/Dutch company can produce as good a product at a much reduced cost to the taxpayer then I understand why they are given the contract. Same as with everything else that is sold off to foreign buyers. Its a pity but everything this government has done is about slashing costs, dismantling the state, selling the public sector to private companies.

Oldwoman70 Sat 24-Mar-18 18:30:14

I have only just read through this thread and am amazed that some people are refusing to sign simply because the petition was started by the DM rather than trying to keep jobs in the UK.
