I am sure many people, particularly those not currently attached to a party, think they want a centre party Annie. Just going on what you have said over the years - which is difficult because little of it has been a positive description of what you do want but rather a negative one of what you don't, I don't believe the centre party you want would be the centre party I would want. Everyone sees themselves as somewhere near the centre it's just that the centre seems to be different for each of us.

I am unclear what a centre left/right (?) party would achieve nor where it would obtain funding. You could argue that you have it already in the Lib Dem’s who certainly appeared left of the Labour Party at one stage, but then joined up with Tories and became complicit in screwing the poor through austerity in order to support the bankers and wealthy as well as The NHS, social services. Local Authorities, schools etc etc. That is why people don’t trust them sufficiently to vote for them. They were at their highest level of support when they espoused policies to the left of Labour. Shame they haven’t learned their lesson.

We need a centre party . Blair won three elections by taking the party to the centre , not forgetting Kinnocks fight against the militants. Foot cast the party into the wilderness for fourteen years .

Yes, I have misgivings about him whitewave for those reasons.

I'm not sure why you think that's priceless whitewave because the question would seem to be fairly relevant to what primrose has just posted above and could be quite pertinent if Corbyn's days are numbered.

Thoughts on David Miliband.

Bear in mind that he travels the world lecturing about refugees that his government helped create by the 10s of thousands if not millions.

He was also complicit in extraordinary rendition.

Certainly someone with blood on their hands.

I'm not sure either Jamila. I think there's a bit of 'we need a hero to come to the rescue' about DM returning, which is not healthy in my opinion. I do think there are others who could do the job. What caught my eye (apart from the 56%) was the move away from a left-right focus. That's something that I think would appeal to quite a few people and to create a new party with representatives from both sides of the HoP would be interesting to say the least.

Thank you for posting that. Someone in my family (lifelong Labour voter, voted for Corbyn with misgivings) mentioned that he would like David Miliband to come back and 'save the country'. However, I'm not sure myself that he is the right person.

Frankly, I am surprised that it is only 56% of voters who are disillusioned.

No lemongrove. All you have to do is show these so called posts. I don't believe they exist so why would someone want to discuss them with you? All I am looking for is honest debate on this thread.

I do question if this is actually a rise in race hatred, or in a feeling that it is okay to use some of the language and debating ploys because they are used without restriction on social media. I'm afraid I think this sort of attack on "the other" has always been with us. You only have to look on this forum, sadly.
I did ask in an earlier post if social media (I said ^the internet^) is to blame for much of the hatred around but was told that no, it is msm.

Gracegran I agree with you - but would have to disagree with what you say about GN You only have to look on this forum, sadly. because, although I do not look at much else on social media I understand that GN is far more restrained in its language and level of discussion than some of the vile exchanges out there. GNHQ would not tolerate it if it descended to the level that apparently goes on elsewhere.

I'm not sure that the whole country wants 'Nordic style' welfare GG and I think the real problem is that most people don't want to pay Nordic style taxes. They don't seem to want a decentralised health care system either. Try putting the idea of a 60% tax rate, breaking up the NHS, pay to see your GP to anyone - I don't think you'll get much support.

And I haven't seen any posts saying it is just political point scoring lemongrove. Perhaps, before you ask questions of others, you should reference the points you are making an show us where this has been said.

I would be interested to know ww if you think there has been any wrongdoing/antisemitism practised by either Corbyn or anybody close to him in the Party or in the wider LP? Because I haven’t noticed any posts by you condemning it at all, just denials and saying it’s all political point scoring, May elections and so on.
Momentum have now issued ( yesterday) their comments and are saying that there is more antisemitism within the LP than was at first realised!
The far left on GN ( only a few but very vociferous) are doing their very best to provide a whitewash by their comments.It isn’t working.

Imagine if David Miliband announced that he was returning to Britain to set up a new party. It would be socially and economically liberal, internationalist and domestically reforming, including of capitalism. Opposing Brexit would be part of its agenda, but not its whole identity.

So Rachel Sylvester want somebody, anybody to set up a social democratic party. Surely we should actually be looking for social democrats to do that not just anybody seeing an opportunity for their career. Please tell me when David Milliband has talked about a capitalism that supports all and the taxation of dead capital, i.e., wealth. When has he suggested the sort of welfare that supports society to the level it really needs to give equality of all opportunities including social opportunity.

I am a social democrat. I still polish my mugs from our rotating conferences. I would vote tomorrow for someone who actually understood and convinced me they believed in it, but I will not vote for watered down Tories.

This country has a long way to go before it accepts that you cannot have Nordic style welfare on US taxes and I have seen no understanding on these threads that such a welfare system supports a forward thinking, quick changing economy based on capitalism.
