Unless you know somebody very personally it's impossible to say exactly what they are like or what their motives are. As a general rule, I would say there aren't many politicians without a degree of self interest at the root of their political dealings!! After all, there is always the next election!!

To say that an honest comment on JRM from a very distinguished politician who has known him since childhood is "disregarding the brexit voters" is absurd.

The brexit voters (about 26% of the population) are not the only British people who should be considered. Those like Chris Patten who believe we should remain in the EU, are not "looking after himself" or disregarding anyone. They are rightly concerned for the future of us all.
