Jacob Rees-Mogg Moves For Conservative Party Leadership.

With an open attack on Theresa Mays handling of the Brexit negotiations many in the media believe that Jacob Rees-Mogg has made his first open move in a bid to become Conservative party leader and Britain's next Prime Minister.

Rees-Mogg in yet another of his ongoing interviews with the media lambasted "weak" Theresa May for preparing the UK for "Brexit failure". Rees-Mogg stated that with The British negotiators going into each set of negotiations with an attitude of "we will kowtow before you, Mr Barnier in every way you possible throughout these talks" there is no hope of success for the UK. The foregoing are undoubtedly harsh words indeed even from an arch hard line Brexitier, but many believe that there is far more to Rees-Moggs words than just Brexit.

It may well be that this hard line right wing politician has witnessed the way that Jeremy Corbyn has moved the Labour party to the left and now feels he could carry out the same in the Conservative party with the exception of that move being in the opposite direction in regards to political ground.

Evidence to the above can be seen in Rees-Moggs attack on Scottish Conservative Leader Ruth Davison, for in the same interview he stated that Davison should not be allowed to marry her longtime same sex partner as planned. However, same sex marriage legislation was put before parliament and passed in 2013 under the David Cameron coalition government.

In making the above comment Rees-Mogg is undoubtedly looking to damage Ruth Davison, who also is seen as a possible next leader of the Conservative party. That stated, it is also being seen as a move against centre ground Concervatives in parliament.

In the above can be seen shades of Momentum's original moves against centre Blairite MPs in the Labour party.

Surely the Downing Street flat would be too small for his family?

“I bought it because I have six children,” he told the paper of the £5m, five-storey property. “My Mayfair house has three bedrooms for nine people [as if you could forget nanny], so reception rooms now have children in them.”

Yes, and without doubt he hopes to be soon living there.

Why move to be nearer to Downing Street? PM’s live there

Poor Jacob Rees-Mogg has been priced out of Mayfair!

"I am a father of six children and I have moved from Mayfair to Cowley Street because Cowley Street is cheaper and I couldn't afford a bigger property in Mayfair."

Nothing to do with moving closer to Downing Street!

varian, i could not agree more with your above post. The fishing industry could be once again a main employer in the Northeast and Southwest if Brexit really ever does come about at some stage, which I hope not

I felt fishing was one of the strongest cards Britain held in the leave negotiations, but this incompetent government and its negotiators have just thrown that advantage away for some far off deal involving the London finance industry.

As stated by you Varion, the people of the Northeast and Southwest who voted for Brexit need to be continually reminded of that if there is to be another General Election in the Autumn.

Thanks Grandad

Our fishing industry never got a good deal because they were badly let down by our representative on the EU fishing committee, none other than Nigel Farage, who only bothered to turn up to one out of 42 committee meetings. Fishing communities who voted leave need to be reminded of that.

Jalima1108, just had a quick look but cannot find the MPs interviews on iPlayer. However, here are some links that demonstrate the strength of feeling on the subject among politicians.

I believe there is also widespread "concern" across the House of Commons in regard to what many see as the sellout of the fishing industry to save the London based Finance Industry in a "prospective" EU agreement.

Grandad1943 Sun 27-May-18 18:51:15

Jalima1108, if you search around I am sure you will find their views on the subject. When we were in Cornwall a couple of weeks ago the south Devon MPs were on BBC Southwest speaking on the Sellout.

MPs in the Northeast have also I believe spoken in similar terms. Whether any of the interviews are available on BBC iPlayer I would not know.

M.E. Just a helpful reminder

maryeliza54 Sun 27-May-18 18:42:20

Butt out ab I’ll post where and what I want - trying to tell me otherwise?

Jalima1108 Sun 27-May-18 18:41:46

Here in the Southwest many MPs of all parties are stating they will not vote for any EU agreement while the "sellout" of the fishing industry continues.

Do you have a link, please, Grandad, as I can't find anything and I usually watch the West Country news too (but not usually the SW news which would cover what remains of the fishing industry).

Anniebach Sun 27-May-18 18:21:23

M.E. You have a thread on abortion laws Forgotten ?

maryeliza54 Sun 27-May-18 18:21:20

The Fixed Term Parliament Act is a fiction and anyone with an ounce of moral decency would repeal it.

Grandad1943 Sun 27-May-18 18:01:52

Jalima1108, JRM now has backing within the powerful Concervative party Bow Group in parliament. One of its members was only last week calling for Jacob Rees-Mogg to become party leader.

That's how near the door of ten Downing Street JRM has become.

Grandad1943 Sun 27-May-18 17:54:09

MawBroon, Therisa May may well be forced into calling a General Election in the Autumn if cross party Alliances on various issues makes an agreement with the European Union on Britain leaving impossible.

Here in the Southwest many MPs of all parties are stating they will not vote for any EU agreement while the "sellout" of the fishing industry continues.

Another TM rock and a hard place.

Jalima1108 Sun 27-May-18 17:44:16

especially if the alternative is Jacob R-M

MawBroon Sun 27-May-18 17:37:30

Point taken, last year Theresa May did her well known impression of a turkey voting for an early Christmas.
Surely she would not be stupid enough to risk that again?

maryeliza54 Sun 27-May-18 17:08:48

Jal well I must have missed that vote of no confidence last year - silly me

maryeliza54 Sun 27-May-18 17:07:22

Maw the fixed term parliament Act is a bit of a moveable feast as we saw only last year

maryeliza54 Sun 27-May-18 17:06:06

The Tories bought votes to form a government ab but I expect you think that is fine - especially as the buyers believe in forced pregnancies no matter the context of the conception and are also homophobic.

Grandad1943 Sun 27-May-18 16:22:16

If they put out a leadership ballot fully to the membership to decide the next leader JRM will be home and dry. Also votes of no confidence in Tory leaders are virtually unknown as the axe is normally brought down behind closed doors. I am sure many of us will remember the Tory Grandees trooping into Downing Street one at a time to tell Maggie Thatcher she had to go.

Also the Theresa Mays paid for alliance with the UDP could very soon fall apart over the border issue or if under pressure she attempts to change the abortion status of Northern Ireland.

Many in the media believe that a General Election is becoming ever more likely in the Autumn if deadlock ensues in parliament over any number of Brexit issues. If that prospect continues to increase, The Tories could get rid of May even during the Summer parliamentary recess.

Any number of things could happen in the current volatility of the Tory party. It will only take one to turn up trumps and she is either gone, or a snap General Election will be called, or perhaps both.

MawBroon Sun 27-May-18 16:13:29

So, perhaps an autumn election with Jacob Rees-Mogg running against Jeremy Corbyn for the keys to ten Downing Street

Rock, hard place.
Devil, deep blue sea.

(But given fixed term parliaments why on earth an Autumn election? )

Anniebach Sun 27-May-18 16:13:10

Back further , much further please
