I so hope they do - not only for themselves but also for the women in other countries who would be heartened by this in their own struggles for change.

"I am sure nobody on here wants to make women who have had to make that difficult decision feel bad or guilty about it" I'm not as sure as you about that mostlyharmless

paddyann Mon 28-May-18 18:02:50

wasting your time gerispringer there are thos on here who will never believe what you say.EVEN though its enshrined in law.Abortions are not carried out for convenience ..especially late abortions .Most of us who can read understand that .As to the jubilation its akin to women getting the vote in my opinion...puts them in the driving seat where control of their bodies is THEIRS .

Anniebach Mon 28-May-18 18:01:22

Strange how the Church is blamed yet Sinn Fein supports abortion on demand Have they cut ties with their past.

Anniebach Mon 28-May-18 17:59:20

You were not the only one Daddima, such jubilations were
Upsetting, in my opinion.

Gerispringer Mon 28-May-18 17:57:24

daddima I understand the jubilation - women in Ireland have been campaigning for decades to have control of their own bodies and not be dictated to by the church and state.

It must be a difficult and agonising decision to make to terminate a pregnancy.
We’ve all heard about the tragic women who died because they weren’t allowed an abortion in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The thought of forcing women who have made that choice for many reasons, to travel abroad to achieve a safe abortion, is upsetting.
Late abortions are very rare and are nearly always for serious medical reasons.
I’m sure nobody on here wants to make women who have had to make that difficult decision in the past (or future) feel bad about it or guilty in any way.

Gerispringer Mon 28-May-18 17:55:05

But 90% of terminations are before 12 weeks, are you objecting to that? Late abortions are usually for serious medical reasons.

Ilovecheese Mon 28-May-18 17:50:03

The reasons why late abortions take place has already been discussed earlier in the thread.

Daddima Mon 28-May-18 17:45:01

I seem to be the only one who was deeply uncomfortable with the scenes of celebration when the result was announced. I feel such jubilation wasn’t fitting.

Is it me?

Anniebach Mon 28-May-18 17:37:38

niggly, I am haunted by the girl who said her mother miscarried at 13 weeks and the little mite was perfectly formed. And we have been told for years an unborn baby recognises music and his/her mother’s voice .

No scans when I had my babies, but I am sure every mother can remember that first kick and the midwife listening to the heart beat with those trumpet things . When we had scans the babies heart beating was visible at eight weeks .

nigglynellie Mon 28-May-18 17:17:02

You and me both Annie, in fact unless it's in the direst of circumstances its a complete No, No.

Anniebach Mon 28-May-18 16:46:33

I am deeply troubled by the thought of aborting a child so far into the pregnancy

Nicenanny3 Mon 28-May-18 16:42:25

I think 6 months too far gone to have an abortion.

Jalima1108 Mon 28-May-18 11:17:54

Very good point.

Gerispringer Mon 28-May-18 11:11:07

When they were making a fuss about the Customs Union the DUP were saying that they were part of the U.K. so same rules should apply. Seems not when it comes to abortion, gay marriage etc

maryeliza54 Sun 27-May-18 20:11:37

It’s good that SW has spoken out but TM will do nothing as she sold her soul ( assuming she has) to the devil in order to form a government. The only hope is that the Speaker might accept the amendment and at least if there were a free vote, I’m hopeful it would pass. Where that would leave us constitutionally I’ve no idea but it would be a message to those hatchet faced bigots in the DUP. NI now has one of the harshest regimes re abortion in Western Europe ( plus no gay marriage). Anyone who doesn’t think this is an utter disgrace has no care or compassion. United Kingdom - you must be joking

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable has said Mrs May should take advantage of the current lack of a devolved administration and push for reform from Westminster. “The position in Northern Ireland is now highly anomalous and I think, probably, action will now have to be taken,” he said.

Sarah Wollaston, the Conservative chairwoman of the Commons Health Select Committee, said: “I would vote to support an extension of abortion rights to all women across the whole UK. “As this is a devolved issue, if an amendment is not accepted by the Speaker, then there should at very least be a referendum in Northern Ireland on this issue.”

Theresa May says abortion is an issue to be decided by Northern Ireland and its devolved powers. But because Northern Ireland hasn’t been able to form a government, their powers have reverted to Westminster.
So the ball is in May’s court. But she can’t risk upsetting the DUP as their votes are propping the Tories up.
Crazy!

Some commentators think that the child sex abuse scandals have really had an impact on the authority of the church in Ireland - I guess it’s multi factorial as most of these thing are. Certainly the prosperity from the EU has led to a better educated population especially amongst women and once women are educated and value themselves, all things are possible, as we have seen. It was heartening today to hear Penny Mourdanr raise the NI situation. But as the Govt is in hock to the DUP it’s unlikely we’ll do anything.

Jalima1108 Sat 26-May-18 20:38:07

Yes, yes and yes

Blencathra Sat 26-May-18 19:42:40

Great news!

Blinko Sat 26-May-18 18:20:55

I wonder if the experience of membership of the wider EU community, has helped bring Ireland into the 21st century. It throws into sharp focus the reactionary line taken in the North, does it not?

trisher Sat 26-May-18 17:59:41

Because the DUP and the Church of Ireland are even more reactionary bigots than the Catholic Church-and that takes some doing!

Jalima1108 Sat 26-May-18 17:37:52

Why are they so behind the rest of the UK?

Gerispringer Sat 26-May-18 16:57:38

Its going to look weird if women from Northern Ireland are now going to be crossing over the border into the Republic for abortions.
