I was wondering why this nice lady is a countess. She is married to a Prince and all the others seem to be Duchesses or a Princess (e.g.Princess Michael).

Thank you Mawbroom - I hadn't read that.

MawBroon Mon 11-Jun-18 17:49:35

It was announced in 1999, at the time of the wedding of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, that he would follow his father as Duke of Edinburgh. (This is unlikely to happen by direct inheritance, as Prince Edward is the youngest of Prince Philip's three sons.)

Rosina Mon 11-Jun-18 17:44:20

How is it known that Edward will become Duke of Edinburgh?

I seem to dimly recall that Princess Anne (a very sensible lady, apart from her dress sense at weddings) chose not to have her children take royal titles. Or any titles at all.

Jalima1108 Mon 28-May-18 23:47:51

My DGD is a princess.
Which one varies from day to day.
grin

Jalima1108 Mon 28-May-18 23:47:00

I think George V's daughter Mary was a Princess (Princess Royal) but her children were not Princes through their grandfather.

merlotgran Mon 28-May-18 23:42:31

They're entitled but if the daughter chooses not to have it bestowed they don't get it....I think.

My kids would probably stomp upstairs yelling, 'I hate you. I could have been a prince! grin

Jalima1108 Mon 28-May-18 23:38:45

But they are not entitled if their mother was the daughter of a monarch.
confused?

merlotgran Mon 28-May-18 23:32:18

Yes. That's why we have Prince Michael and Princess Alexandra - both grandchildren of George V

Jalima1108 Mon 28-May-18 23:25:37

I think grandchildren of monarchs may be called Prince or Princess too.

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-May-18 23:20:52

If princesses are only princesses because they're the daughters of monarchs or princes, how come Princess Anne is a princess when she was born before her mother became queen? Did she not have that title from birth?

Deedaa Mon 28-May-18 22:09:09

And of course Princess Anne's children don't have titles at all and seem perfectly happy without them.

sodapop Mon 28-May-18 20:53:53

After her early problems the Countess of Wessex has become a hard working royal and apparently a favourite of the Queen. They keep in the background unlike air Miles Andy.

Eglantine21 Mon 28-May-18 19:17:22

It didn’t say why. Just that he made a point of requesting Letters Patent to that effect.

Egalitarian principles? He’s certainly kept his children out of the limelight.

I met him once, briefly and thought he was much better looking than his photos!

nigglynellie Mon 28-May-18 19:16:05

Perhaps he and Sophie thought titles for their children inappropriate. They are however Lady Louise, and her brother Lord Severn, so not completely titleless!!

sassenach512 Mon 28-May-18 19:08:31

why didn't Prince Edward want his children to have the HRH title Eglantine? Prince Andrew certainly made sure his two had it but he's a different kettle of fish I think

grin

When DGS 2 was about 3 he announced “When I gwow up I’m going to be a Pwincess “
He’s 6 1/2 and a demon on the rugby pitch! tcrgrin

Jalima1108 Sun 27-May-18 17:29:36

I remember Prince William of Gloucester - he was very dashing! and it was very sad when he was killed.

Jalima1108 Sun 27-May-18 17:27:16

Apparently the Queen can confer the title of princess upon anyone she chooses. She has the right though it hasn’t been applied for hundreds of years in practice!

There you are lemongrove - write and ask!

Princess Lemongrove?

nigglynellie Sun 27-May-18 16:52:52

No problem annie?. Yes it is fascinating, and archaic, which makes it even more interesting! Did anyone see the programme about Prince William of Gloucester? That was extremely interesting, and begged a question or two!!!! Apparently Prince Charles who was very fond of P.W of G called his first son after this long dead Prince.

merlotgran Sun 27-May-18 16:52:22

I know she wasn't entitled to be called Princess Diana, Annie but she was. Can anyone remember her being called Princess Charles?

Those who favoured Princess Di could have called her Princess Chaz I suppose. grin

Eglantine21 Sun 27-May-18 16:35:14

Although she could not be Princess Diana, she was Diana, Princess of Wales and Meghan and Kate can be Princess WillIam and Princess Henry of Wales but the Queen decided it was demeaning to have to use the husbands name and decided to confer dukedoms I n marriage so the woman could use her own name.

I was so interested I looked it all up.

Apparently the Queen can confer the title of princess upon anyone she chooses. She has the right though it hasn’t been applied for hundreds of years in practice!

And Edward specifically requested that the title of Royal Highness should not be conferred upon his children.

Fascinating isn’t it!

Anniebach Sun 27-May-18 16:11:19

Sorry niggly, we posted about the same time ?

Anniebach Sun 27-May-18 16:09:51

Diana was not entitled to be .princess Diana, if not for extra titles for princes it would be Princess Charles, Princess Andrew, Princess Edward, Princess William, Princess Henry
