Or rather Baroness Wilson of Rievaulx , although I am sure she would have preferred the former, has died.
Reading her obituaries I am reminded of the affection in which she was held regardless of political persuasion and of days when life seemed more straightforward.
When politicians or other public figures fade from the public eye, generally their spouses do too, but recently I have been struck by the intelligence and integrity of women such as Barbara Bush or Edna Healey.
RIP Mary Wilson

Please! Can we just talk about the topic! Please?

trisher Fri 08-Jun-18 13:02:04

Then
^Bl**dy h*ll, did I ever say you did MaryEliza?
Anyway, I got it wrong, it was Nehru! blushbut it was a strong rumour at the time and since.
*Don’t be so touchy.*^
Last line so personal and unnecessary

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 13:01:54

Aw Maw, sorry I have the giggles , my views on the QM do not include admiration ? I will remain silent and read the posts on this woman

Chewbacca Fri 08-Jun-18 13:01:39

Yes Annie!

Norma Major held their marriage together whilst JM had a much publicised affair with EC. And another one before that. She always appeared to be a very calm and supportive woman but must have been going through hell at the time.

trisher Fri 08-Jun-18 13:00:12

Oh dear got it wrong it was 9.44 and the first agressive post
*Is it fair to hijack a thread about Mary Wilson?
(Oh let’s have another political bunfught shall we? )*

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 12:58:31

Hear, hear Anniebach
Would it be controversial if I mentioned the Queen Mum I wonder?

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 12:57:43

Try 9.48 and between 10.58 and 11.04 Mawbroon
9.48 no post.
9.44 I did ask about the derailing of the thread but I was not intending to sound aggressive, just felt Mary Wilson was being sidelined
10.58 was a (sincere) apology for getting Nehru/Gandhi wrong (will I ever live that down)
11.00 I was accused of sarcasm which was news to me because in no way was my comment sarcastic.

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 12:55:49

Let’s go back to women married to men in the public eye ?

Chewbacca Fri 08-Jun-18 12:50:01

Well said Maw. This is a damned good topic to discuss and if we could just stop with the aggressive and angry posts, the subject could be discussed properly. I just don't understand the need for such anger and vitriol that derail threads and put people off posting. What is the point? Please GNHQ, don't pull this thread. It isn't the thread that's the problem.

trisher Fri 08-Jun-18 12:49:56

Try 9.48 and between 10.58 and 11.04 Mawbroon

trisher Fri 08-Jun-18 12:46:21

So swingers Annie? Who knew?

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 12:46:17

Which post was antagonistic?
(Of mine I mean)

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 12:42:14

No trisher I was not being argumentative, just replying to a post about Corbyn, there are couples who are content with an open marriage , both have affairs but stay in the marriage, joint agreement to disregard wedding vows.

trisher Fri 08-Jun-18 12:38:01

If you don't want controversy MawBroon then perhaps you shouldn't reply in an antagonistic manner to posters. As for my conclusion both Annieand niggly posted about open marriage and the inconsequence of affairs. But I agree they may not have meant me to reach the conclusion I did. I suspect that perhaps they were not posting their real views, just being argumentative.

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 12:31:01

Why are you threatening to pull a perfectly reasonable thread which (yet again) I started in good faith?
Just because one person decides to kick off does that mean the rest of us can’t e.g. honour the memory of a significant woman or ask for instances of other “powers behind the throne” as it were?
This is too like “whole class detentions” because of one troublemaker sitting at the back.
Be reasonable GNHQ .
Please.
(Otherwise anybody could, were they so minded, effectively censor the threads of those they do not like.)

Jane10 Fri 08-Jun-18 12:18:55

The blood pressure thread might be worth a look...

LauraGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 08-Jun-18 12:18:24

Hi all - there seems to be quite a few unpleasant comments here, which has moved the thread away from it's original purpose. If this continues, we'll have to unfortunately pull the thread completely.

Jane10 Fri 08-Jun-18 12:15:49

Well I don't know what happened with this thread. Why has it turned into some sort of fight?

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 12:12:09

No it doesn’t Maw ?

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 12:08:38

So what seems to emerge from this thread is that it's OK to be as promiscuous as you like as long as you don't get found out and don't get divorced. Who knew that so many GNers were swingers?

Does it? confused

My intention was not only to share Mary Wilson’s (IMO admirable) life with others and by analogy to look at instances of “the woman behind the (better known) man.”

trisher Fri 08-Jun-18 12:04:24

So what seems to emerge from this thread is that it's OK to be as promiscuous as you like as long as you don't get found out and don't get divorced. Who knew that so many GNers were swingers?
For Mary Wilson, who tried to be her own woman, wasn't a great poet but wrote from her heart

After the Bomb
After the Bomb had fallen,
After the last sad cry
When the Earth was a burnt-out cinder
Drifting across the sky,

Came Lucifer, Son of the Morning,
With his fallen-angel band,
Silent and swift as a vulture
On a mountain-top to stand.

And he looked, as he stood on the mountain
With his scarlet wings unfurled,
At the charnel-house of London
And the cities of the world.

And he laughed..........

And as that mocking laughter
Across the heavens ran,
He cried 'Look!' to the fallen angels -
'This is the work of Man
Who was made in the image of God!'

Mary Wilson also had to put up with the rumours surrounding Harold and Marcia Falkender.

Chewbacca Fri 08-Jun-18 11:22:50

Sorry for gobbledegook on previous post. I'm on a mobile phone and the screen is miniscule.

Chewbacca Fri 08-Jun-18 11:21:06

If it's safe to post now . ..... I heard someone on Radio 4 yesterday morning say that MR was a very kind and gentle woman. When he was suffering with dementia, in later life, she accompanied him to formal dinners, made sure that he was immaculately turned out and guided him through social situations. Her deep love for him lasted to the end. She was deeply loved and admired by her family and friends for being kind and loyal. A good way for anyone to be remembered, whoever they are.
