Or rather Baroness Wilson of Rievaulx , although I am sure she would have preferred the former, has died.
Reading her obituaries I am reminded of the affection in which she was held regardless of political persuasion and of days when life seemed more straightforward.
When politicians or other public figures fade from the public eye, generally their spouses do too, but recently I have been struck by the intelligence and integrity of women such as Barbara Bush or Edna Healey.
RIP Mary Wilson

Heaven's above, ladies!!! We're discussing the demise of a much admired and respected political wife aged 102, not who slept with whom in c1946!! Frankly who cares!! ( it was Nehru!!!) Yes I remember Lord Boothby, Lady Dorothy, and the whispers connecting him to Ronnie Kray. (Princess Margaret?) Harold Macmillan behaved with great dignity as did Mary Wilson in the face of swirling gossip. I think certain people did in those days and we all thought the more of them whatever their political persuasion. Just my opinion before I get leapt at !!

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 11:15:12

Wives of politicians ?

Chewbacca Fri 08-Jun-18 11:13:09

I'd love to join in on this topic but the usual angry and aggressive posts deter me. I wonder how many others are put off too? Can't we just discuss the subject OP started and leave the bile out of it please?

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 11:13:01

An open marriage means both parties agree to conduct their marriage this way , it does not mean ‘my way or no way’

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 11:05:53

Just before I go - here’s a suggestion MB why don’t you go and start a thread ‘Why is maryeliza so touchy today? ‘. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of support.

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 11:03:47

Actually you will no doubt tell me.

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 11:02:03

Hormones?

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 11:01:53

You go figure - ??????????. I’ll go and find a thread with some grown ups

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 11:00:26

Don’t be so touchy - don’t tell me what to be - I wonder why I might be touchy today?

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 11:00:02

Hello, “sarcasm” what sarcasm?
Here we go again.
Fight, empty room, go figure.

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 10:59:23

Don’t try ? with me MB re Ghandi.

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 10:58:47

Bl**dy h*ll, did I ever say you did MaryEliza?
Anyway, I got it wrong, it was Nehru! blushbut it was a strong rumour at the time and since.
Don’t be so touchy.

nigglynellie Fri 08-Jun-18 10:56:41

I always felt rather sorry for Mary Wilson as she seemed to my young eyes to cut a rather sad figure. Being married to Harold perhaps wasn't that easy, who knows, Marcia and all that certainly led to speculation! I remember her saying in a rare interview that she liked the popular song 'Leaving on a Jet Plane' (don't know when I'll be back again) was that telling us something?!!

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 10:53:39

Oh wow - did you see what I did there? I brought JC into a thread first

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 10:52:31

An open marriage suited them ab ? But what about their marriage vows - you know those really really important marriage vows that JC apparently plays fast and loose with.

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 10:50:15

Did I say she had an affair with Ghandi? No I didn’t so stop posting things I didn’t say MB -OK?

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 10:48:40

An open marriage suited them . Let’s not point fingers at the likes of Edwina Mountbatten , women had affairs, some with men in positions of power some with the milkman

Jane10 Fri 08-Jun-18 10:44:38

It was Nehru.

merlotgran Fri 08-Jun-18 10:44:00

Their marriage was built on a strong foundation - Her money!

Anniebach Fri 08-Jun-18 10:43:54

Edwina had an affair with Nehru not Gandhi . She and Mountbatten had an open marriage . Many affairs on both sides.

merlotgran Fri 08-Jun-18 10:42:51

I thought she had an affair with Nehru confused

MawBroon Fri 08-Jun-18 10:33:36

Edwina Mountbatten was rather outrageous wasn’t she,but presumably effective and fulfilled her role which wasn’t easy.
So do you really believe she had an affair with Gandhi?

I am glad you feel that way about your DM.
My MIL as a Diplomatic wife was a heck of a lot more “diplomatic” than my FIL, a charismatic character but who can’t have been easy to live with.

maryeliza54 Fri 08-Jun-18 10:13:56

MB we were talking about the political times not her as such. Whenever a political figure or someone connected to a political figure dies, it’s inevitable that the political context of their lives will be part of their obituaries. It’s particularly relevant at the moment because of the JT case. I have to say that DM is a particularly interesting example of the woman behind the man as is Edwina Mountbatten.
