I think it was Theresa May as home sec who ruled he couldn’t use the water cannons, that was after Johnson had bought them. He was so arrogant he didn’t think to ask permission beforehand . They are rusting away somewhere in Kent I believe.

Trump Blimp
(261 Posts)Im not at all pro trump but IMO this is awful
It is not a "protest". Ive been on protests. They have a point and an aim
What is point/aim here?
That they don't like his appearance & don't want UK to even try to negotiate?
They don't want us to be the "bigger person" as a nation? they want us to be as childish and petty as him?
Its embarrassing and diplomatically dangerous, NOT an exercise in constructive protect or free speech
Oh Beau MSM predominantly left wing - you really are a hoot what with that and your adoration of Boris and Jacob. As for SM p, it’s of all opinions across the board often depending on who’s posting or blogging or whatever
I am genuinely puzzled by the statement "social media and MSM is predominantly left wing"
I admit I know relatively little about social media but the main stream media in this country consists of newspapers like The Daily Mail, Express, Sun, Telegraph and The Times, all of which are clearly right wing and in the main pro-brexit. Only the Guardian and Mirror tend to support Labour, with the "i" being neutral.
I know that the BBC is accused of bias by both right and left and uses this as an excuse to claim that it is unbiased, but it has always been obvious that the BBC has played a big part in promoting brexit, not just since 2016, but for a good twenty years, constantly inviting Farage onto QT and other political discussions, when no other MEP ever got a chance to correct his lies. I think the BBC have a lot to answer for.
One of my work colleagues has a selfie with Boris, BJ was walking past my office. My son has a selfie with Boris, BJ was at the House of Commons and my son works there, BJ's assistant asked him and his friend if they wanted a photo. Just saying ...
And water cannons?!?!? No. Something needs to be addressed in that the Police are not the enemy of the people. To have the Police force use water cannons on British citizens would be outrageous! And working in SE1 the Garden Bridge was extremely unpopular, and oh my God the cost!
*Quote - At least £37.4m of public funds has already been spent on the project and a further £9m is at risk.
In total, an estimated £46.4m of taxpayers' money - calculated as direct grants of about £26m from the Department of Transport (DfT), around £11m in services in kind from Transport for London (TfL) and the remainder in cancellation costs - has been spent, according to the review by Dame Margaret Hodge.
Mr Khan said it was his "duty to ensure taxpayers' money was spent responsibly".
"I have been clear since before I became mayor that no more London taxpayers' money should be spent on this project and when I took office I gave the Garden Bridge Trust time to try and address the multiple serious issues with it," he said.
"Londoners will, like me, be very angry that London taxpayers have now lost tens of millions of pounds - committed by the previous mayor on a project that has amounted to nothing." *unquote
I worked in the West End then Paddington then back in the West End for 22 years until I took early retirement - London certainly felt safer to me with Boris at the helm. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but just because social media and MSM is predominantly left wing does not mean that the country as a whole is - thank goodness.
Boris was an unmitigated disaster as Mayor - money is still being spent on his ill advised vanity projects that have never been completed He was well known for not mastering briefs and detail and it all being about him - exactly what is said about his disatetous tenure as FS. He has overplayed nis hand now I believe - thank goodness. You’ll never get your dream Beau. JRM is hypocritical and sexist and again only cares about himself . He and BJ are a perfect pair.
But at least he was not Labour so all that's just unfortunate - I do agree it was a disgrace that he was never allowed to use the water cannon though.
Well we could list the lies and stupid decisions made by Boris Johnson when he was mayor Beau. Far from the perfect mayor. Garden bridge and the cycle not so superhighway spring to mind ( you should hear the taxi drivers thoughts on this!), not to mention closing fire stations when he promised he wouldn't, buying unused water cannons, the underused cable car, plus all the deputies he had who were fired or resigned due to dodgy deals, I could go on...
Sorry, been busy looking after DGS - The reason I detest Sadiq Khan is that he is a mumbling fool - I have never heard him answer a question intelligently, he runs around London having selfies taken with random people, he completely forgot to commemorate the 7/7 bombings last week, murder rates have risen in London since he came to power, heaven knows who he thinks he is but he should not be commenting on Trump at all, basically everything about him is unsuited to being the Mayor of London. Nothing to do with 'racism', but a lot to do with him being Labour obviously. Boris Johnson was my perfect Mayor and Foreign Secretary and Jacob Rees-Mogg is my dream PM so there is no way in the world I would find an inarticulate lightweight like Sadiq Khan to my taste.
“Hate” might be too strong a word Iam but they dislike us for starting the breakup of the EU . Germany and the big players are clearly not going to agree/ give in, to any of our claims and they are making it as difficult as possible for fear that another country might want to join us .
Gilly, why do you say the rest of Europe hate us? Every other European who has raised the issue of Brexit with me has expressed surprise and sorrow at the Leave result. I've not felt any animosity at all during visits to other parts of Europe.
The relationship between Britain, Europe and the US , as well as other parts of the world is so well established I can't see that this balloon and the protests will do anything to rock that. Trump is doing his best to ensure America is "hated".
Well we will well and truly shoot ourselves in the foot with this one. We have accused Russia of murder, the rest of Europe hate us, we are well on the way to adding the USA to the list of “enemies” too. Maybe we could strike up a trade deal with the North Poll ? Would that keep our manufacturing industries busy ?
Well I ll be there is spirit turning my back on him and in my head mooning him Oh er naughty missus
I dislike the man and all he’s stands for so much I can’t speak
I think the best British and dignified way to show our disapproval of DT is empty streets and no crowds wherever he goes. Sadly I can't see that happening, there will always be hordes of media at least.
Possibly then, everyone, all over the UK, turning their back to him as his car passes through, and no noise at all. ? I'm sure he hates being ignored more than anything.
Come on Beau some of us are waiting for your explanation - is it what some of us are thinking? You know the Martin Luther King dream about how his children would be judged. Given his achievements and qualifications, his experience, then quite frankly there is only one explanation isn’t there?
In what way is Khan “the most unqualified person ever to hold political office “??? Because his dad was an immigrant bus driver? He’s been an MP and a lawyer, got more votes in a fair election. More qualifications than Trump for political office that’s for sure
My opinion is the inflatable has become an unnecessary focus of the protests - which are happening around the UK, not just London. The Mayor of London was also voted into his position so how about giving him the respect of his office (I'm a lifelong Londoner and I voted for him).
I have American friends who find the blimp idea funny. Trump -a World Leader who tossed sweets across the table at the German Prime Minister (would he have done that to a man) - his disdain of women is appalling.
Trump blimp, fine by me. He's a bad man, a dreadful politician, hold him up for ridicule.
Do explain Beau
I think its foul.. absolutely ridiculous, and childish.
Trump is the elected President of the US whatever anyone thinks of him and I am ashamed of Khan for going along with this. Then again I do think Khan is the most unqualified person ever to hold political office in this country so would expect nothing less from him.
Trump said today he expects the U.K. to be “in turmoil”. I’m sure he won’t see the blimp and he will tweet about the mess the UK is in.
thats why the best "protest" would be to act like a grown-up civilised people and not behave in any way that he can use in his favour
maryeliza - of course I agree, sometimes it's impossible not to demonstrate opposition to something, or in this case, someone.
I've just seen a news item about a toddler, alone with no parent or legal representation being asked by a Judge in a US course, if he understands the legal issues surrounding immigration. the report states the little boy asked for water. He was later removed from the court, by officials, screaming.
If this report is true and I've no reason to believe it isn't - of course its right that we demonstrate against this vile man. I believe he has no right to the respect often shown towards a visiting head of state.
He isn't fit for the office he holds.
Thank goodness she is in her nineties, varian, otherwise ..... I'm sure ykwim.
I sometimes feel very sorry for the Queen. I am sure she is a genuinely nice person. She has been dutiful beyond reproach in her service to our country and she is still expected, in her nineties, when most other folk have long retired, to shake hands with dreadful people like Trump.
I think this action is disgraceful. We are supposed to be a civilised country in the 21st Century. You don't have to like Trump or agree with him, but he should be given the respect of a visiting head of state. Anyone in authority condoning this proposed action should perhaps look at themselves, it is wrong and two wrongs don't make a right.
