Some things can get lost in translation.......??

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 21:14:59

Thanks janea - this part is interesting:
you’ll want a stash of your high-quality EU goods, too. Start with olive oil, pepper, pasta and rice. For flavour, you’ll want spices, chilli and herbs, anchovies and tomato (paste, tinned and passata).

DH told me that there would be a shortage of olive oil as the harvest had been poor so I have several bottles in the cupboard.
Does rice come from the EU or from the States and India? Is the American rice bleached by any chance shock?
And my spices and herbs are probably already past their sell-by date (naughty)

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 21:15:47

and pepper is from the Far East surely?

Remember the 1970 well - we froze in London, as they were changing to North Sea gas, and the strikes. We had to move into a 5' by 10' portacabin at the hospital- a 4'6 bed, a chair, a small desk and a sink. But at least it was warm.

No.
The song (from Oliver!) is “Food, glorious food”

Captains tickets are internationally recognised.
While we were in Paris we had our barge refuelled. These are all internationally recognised components i.e. your re fuelling nozzle. These are all internationally recognised components.

Calm good sense from the Guardian as you might expect.
Scaremongering is in my opinion, one of the lowest form of propaganda.

Tonnes of rice grown in the eu at the detriment to poorer countries who are just trying to make a living.

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 21:27:54

Ah - in Greece?

I don't mind if the Greeks grow rice, they have been very hard done by.

Chewbacca Wed 18-Jul-18 21:28:54

Isn't this type of scaremongering a self fulfilling prophecy? So long as the tin foil hat brigade don't start rushing out to Tesco at 3 o'clock in the morning to stockpile, and empty the shelves, there shouldn't be any shortages of anything. But I suppose there will always be those who are already constructing an underground cache of turnips, candles and blotting paper, "just in case".

petra Wed 18-Jul-18 21:28:55

Does anyone remember the 'stacking' system on the M20 in 2015?
In June/July of that year the Dover bound carriage was shut for 24 days out of 40.
I don't remember any shortages. Only a few days ago grandad1943 was telling us how time critical these deliveries are.

jura2 Wed 18-Jul-18 21:33:02

On the way to Tuscany, we drive through miles and miles of paddy fields in the central north.

Lost your SOH Maw - sounds better with spam. Now, I have to admit, 39 years in UK and I have refused to taste Spam - so there you go.

Chewbacca, I for one will not be stockpiling - one less to worry about.

MawBroon Wed 18-Jul-18 21:34:10

Exactly Chewbacca.
Talking the problem up can exacerbate a problem or even create one.
Insidious.

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Jul-18 21:37:51

Chewbacca - that is exactly what happens - rumours and bulk panic buying creating shortages for others.

8 countries grow rice.
How about this. In 2015 the eu stopped what they called 'export subsidies'
In the late 1980s, early 1990s the eu was spending €10 billion a year, a third of the CAP budget in order to allow traders to get rid of the eu's growing export surpluses.

Haven’t lost my SOH Jura I just don’t find anything funny in people getting things wrong.

Must be a Brit thing.

jura2 Wed 18-Jul-18 21:57:08

oh petra- where on earth do you think they get the hard flour 00 required for pasta that is not grown in UK?!? And for bread too. Please.

And yes, I am fully aware that I do not live in the UK currently, thanks for reminding me, just in case. Doh ...

MissAdventure Wed 18-Jul-18 21:57:45

This has really tickled me.. smile
Made my day.

jura2 Wed 18-Jul-18 21:58:32

My kids always sung that one- much better.

Same as squashed tomatoes and stew - it is not 'wrong' - just a choice to make it different, for fun indeed.
