kittylester Thu 19-Jul-18 09:24:12

pamela, I thought the op was serious! It's the others that have gone silly! grin

MawBroon Thu 19-Jul-18 09:46:41

Jura2 you asked
Dunkirk- how are you going to get there and back, pray tell

I think some of us Brits (or our fathers or grandfathers) were pretty damn good at getting to Dunkirk and back in May 1940.

Perhaps an unfortunate choice of port for you?

petra Thu 19-Jul-18 10:35:39

MawBroon
perhaps an unfortunate choice of port for you
Oh that's good.grin

MaizieD Thu 19-Jul-18 11:17:39

It's not good, Petra, it's just unpleasant

MawBroon Thu 19-Jul-18 11:22:36

What is unpleasant?
Querying the choice of Dunkirk?
Why?

MawBroon Thu 19-Jul-18 11:24:53

Only unpleasant because of what you are reading into it MaizieD - and don’t start spouting accusations racism. I am half German so have no axe to grind about WWII.
And Jura2 is, as she forever reminds us, as British as you or any of us.

Dialogue from a tv series:
‘ My Uncle never made it back from Dunkirk’
‘Oh,dear, am sorry to hear that’
‘Yes, it was a shame, but he tried to lift a very heavy case of wine into his car....and it did for him’ grin
Tv series, comedy, The Detectives, (1980’s)

How long can glass bottles of olive oil be stored for?
Can decent EU butter be bought in tins for long time storage? Tinned cheese?

Rice, how long can uncooked rice last in cool dry storage?

Obviously few will willingly eat cheap US meat or dairy, so I need to know which tinned meat is wholesome.

Can dried eggs be obtained? Naturally I'd want clean EU eggs.

Nicenanny3 Thu 19-Jul-18 14:59:15

Why on earth would you want EU butter, eggs or EU cheese buy British ??. We will have control of our waters, Grimsby will be great again. You can't beat British fish and ? out of newspaper, no need to worry about silly EU rules. ?

MawBroon Thu 19-Jul-18 18:09:52

Alexa are you being ironic?
This country produces incomparable beef, lamb, pork, dairy produce - cheeses, butter, all sorts of milk, we bake bread from flour produced in the U.K., we grow fruit and vegetables and I have enjoyed both excellent Chapeldown rosé wine from Tenterden and their pink champagne!

kittylester Thu 19-Jul-18 18:32:50

Just remembered there is a well regarded vineyard about 5 miles away. phew!!

petra Thu 19-Jul-18 19:18:01

Alexa
Irrespective of Brexit, do you go out of your way to support eu farmers to the detriment of our own. Shame on you.
And I repeat, this has nothing to do with Brexit

Alexa Thu 19-Jul-18 19:36:38

I do prefer British produce especially livestock products for welfare reasons but there isn't enough of it to feed everyone in Britain . At present if you look on the supermarket shelves you will see that most food comes from Denmark, France, Spain and even further afield, Africa, New Zealand and South America.

My point is that with Brexit we will have to import livestock produce from the US instead of the more expensive food from Europe. We already know that the cheaper US meat and dairy is not as pure as the European equivalent. Most people. me included, cannot afford to buy more expensive food.

Brexit and worse, global warming, will make food more expensive sooner or later.

I do know about the Yorkshire vinyard, and that is one of the hot summer's great successes.

Jalima1108 Thu 19-Jul-18 19:52:36

We have a vineyard just up the road and another one not that far away.

Should be a good vintage this year!

We always imported food from overseas - notably from the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand.
Of course, Australia have now found other markets since we abandoned them in favour of the EU. sad

Jalima1108 Thu 19-Jul-18 19:53:46

How long can glass bottles of olive oil be stored for?
I would imagine years longer than the sell-by dates on the bottles. I'm sure the Romans kept it in far less hygienic conditions and for much longer.

Jalima1108 Thu 19-Jul-18 19:57:36

Can decent EU butter be bought in tins
confused
it is no better than British butter so why buy it.? Although I quite like Lurpak - but it's not what it was years ago.
Tinned cheese
confused again

Why would I want to buy US meat and dairy? confused yet again

MawBroon Thu 19-Jul-18 20:03:14

I dispute that home produced food is necessarily dearer and recoil at the thought of tinned butter or tinned cheese whatever that may be!
Anyway, here is the Ladybird guide to stockpiling so all will be made clear.

Jalima1108 Thu 19-Jul-18 20:08:48

Supermarket British butter is generally cheaper.

West Country butter with sea salt is cheaper than Normandy butter with sea salt.
Perhaps the salt is more expensive in France.

Thank you MawBroon, must rush out and buy a copy.

Incidentally, does anyone know if we will still be able to use our petrol coupons, unused and still languishing in the drawer since 1973?

petra Thu 19-Jul-18 20:13:42

Alexa
Are you, and anyone else aware that the eu is in trade talks with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to increase the tonnage of meat we import from them to 900,000 a year.
From Farming uk. No wonder a lot of farmers voted to leave.

Welshwife Thu 19-Jul-18 20:31:14

The U.K. does not produce sufficient milk to make all the butter, cheese and yoghurts and so imports it from the EU on a daily basis.
Olive oil will last a good while but needs to be stored in a dark cupboard.

Jalima1108 Thu 19-Jul-18 20:31:26

Much of the steak that we eat in restaurants is from Argentina

It is perfectly fine, grass-fed I understand, but not from the EU or UK

paddyann Thu 19-Jul-18 21:26:01

I only buy locally sourced meat ,if it doesn't have a Saltire on it then its not coming home with me .We're lucky as local butchers use local farms for their meat.Eggs and milk come from a farm I see from my window .I do buy rapeseed oil as its in abundance in our fields ...my hayfever confirms that .Scotch tomatoes and soft fruits are the best in the worl ask any top chef .We wont be buying American chlorine washed chicken or flabby corn fed beef ..why would we ?

jura2 Thu 19-Jul-18 23:40:13

Does not matter if it is Dunkirk, or Calais, or Dieppe ... or any port. As Customs check will have to be on UK side, the disruption and delays will probably make life very difficult.

And if the French dockers, ferries, farmers, etc - decide to make it 1000 x more so- because they get fed up with the implications of Brexit for them- then ... just does not bear thinking about.
