Given that we now appear to have nowhere to go with Brexit, and a "no deal" is on the cards, stockpiling what we import today is inevitable.
Much talk about food and drugs in the press today, and some well-known Brexiteers seem to be advocating "well we'll just have to eat less", what will happen to what remains of the UK's manufacturing industry?
Should we turn our lawns into vegetable patches, and or sheds into food & drug stores just in case there is a "no deal"?
Manufacturers used to have 'stores' - be it spare parts, newly made components, or incoming raw materials. Many of those 'stores' have been dispensed with, and industry relies on JIT (Just In Time) processes - from food processing to automotive and aerospace.
All of these industries are dependent on lorries to transport the essential ingredients - this looks set to badly damage companies' productivity, costs, and profitability. Taking a look at Eurotunnel today, and the slow transfer of lorries onto the Channel Tunnel trains, problems of checking and verifying imports and exports at the borders will change.
Brexiteers suggest this will be a 'short term pain', after we get our 'sovereignty' back - how long is short term, 2 years, 5 years, or 10?
Still, this is what we voted for, and all will be well ..... soon ... won't it?
