oh yes, she has every right because they are daleks or letterboxes and walk two paces behind their partners. So that makes it ok.

It's scary AND demeaning. I took the bull by horns today when I saw a lady in one, looked her in the eyes and said pleasantly "you would be SO pretty if you stopped wearing that." I'm going to continue every time I see one, not insulting them but encouraging them out of it. No, I'm sure it won't have slightest effect but I have to say what I think!!!

Out and about today I saw all sorts of sartorial crimes, e.g. hugely obese women wearing skin-tight leggings and cheap short-length t-shirts. They would be so much prettier if they wore below-arse tunics but I wouldn't dream of telling them so.

We all have our preferences and secret prejudices when we judge what people wear, but we have no right to accost them in public!

I'm just wading-in with various things to say.

I don't like the niqab, but one can have a conversation and relationship with a wearer - I worked in Saudi for 6 months and the young Saudi nurses wore various variations. Despite myself and my underlying feelings, I knew who was who and their different personalities.

There are so few wearers in the UK - I live in the middle of London - it's not a major issue. Why is everyone so scared of these women?

I hate the subjugation of woman as much as any of you so wouldn't want to encourage the wearing of such amongst British-born women, but they are making a choice; as I said upthread, they have mothers and grandmothers who didn't cover.

Regarding children being frightened …... I've just suffered a tortuous bus journey along the length of Oxford Street with DGD(9) it was so slooooow! The place was heaving and the world and his wife were strolling along, including a number of niqab-wearing tourists. I've just asked GD what she thinks of these women and is she frightened of them - she shrugged her shoulders and gave me a strange look! She has never ever commented on them - lives in very rural Somerset.
