Government and official opposition party has to be voted in, how can one vote for a party when one can’t trust the party leader? And racism is not a side issue .

henetha Fri 17-Aug-18 10:35:44

I wish we could forget all these side issues and the government just get on with governing, and the opposition party just get on with trying to be a relevant oppposition.

I see the OP has been deleted for some obscure reason. Perhaps a letter from the HoL will be deemed suitable

I take comfort from the common sense most people showed at Goldsmith’s underhand tactics and frankly insulting their intelligence.
But sadly, more and more politicians, commentators and their public figures spout offensive rubbish which is promptly relayed by the gutter press/social media and then quoted (even in posts on GN) as “gospel truth”.
Have we lost the ability to exercise judgement?

Zac Goldsmith who ran a disgraceful campaign for Mayor - alleging Sadiq had terrorist links - people in glass houses. Writing to people on the electoral roll with a name that sounded S Asian to tell them Sadiq would tax their jewellery! Londoners had more sense than to elect him.https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/davehillblog/2016/mar/16/london-mayor-race-negatives-hindu-jewels-leaflets-misfired

What has religion got to do with anything?

Don't you read history books? more wars are blamed on religion than everything else.

I do hope that this stupidity stops with that post, just remember this,

That's Christianity for you and I suppose the same must be said for that other nonsense that's been bandied about, can't quite think what it's called, o yes the labour party.

MawBroon Fri 17-Aug-18 09:11:49

You have said this elsewhere. Thank you Exeter University, but I can think for myself. I also understand what a “phobia” is and hardly need to be told
Islamophobia is based upon an unfounded hostility towards Islam

Duh!

Iamnotarobot Fri 17-Aug-18 08:08:42

Part of guidance published by Exeter University. This may assist those who are in danger of mis-understanding what is or is not acceptable to any Muslim posters on this forum.

Islamophobia is based upon an unfounded hostility towards Islam. It may be directed against individuals or groups because of their actual or perceived religious background or identification. Islamophobia encapsulates cultural and religious prejudice and discrimination, as well as being in many cases prejudice based on skin colour and / or other visible physical characteristics. In this sense it is complex – a prejudicial response to ethnic, cultural and religious differences. Anti-Muslim prejudice and racism is based upon claims that Islam is an „inferior‟ religion and a threat to the dominant values of society. It results in unfair discrimination, harassment and sometimes physical assault, and can bring about the exclusion of individuals or groups from the mainstream areas of social, economic or political life.
Islamophobia and anti-Muslim prejudice and racism may take the form of:
 name-calling;
 offensive „jokes‟;
 cultural or religious insensitivity;
 verbal assault;
 graffiti;
 intimidation;
 exclusion;
 discrimination;
 denial of services and entitlements;
 physical assault.

We hear a lot about MPs should be representative of their voters, by any stretch of the imagination our MP is not. He was parachuted into a safe seat by the Tory party displacing several other candidates that would have been suitable.

Islamaphobia - the fear of Islam. Yes I fear Islam because of the way that it is promoted worldwide, because a great many wars worldwide are being fought in the name of Islam, because of the way that Muslims deliberately do not integrate, because of the way women are treated, there are many thousands of Muslims being monitored by the security services so they are not " Comfortable " either.
I could go on and on and many in the UK feel the same way, no other religion makes me feel threatened.

M0nica Thu 16-Aug-18 22:22:33

Diana54 How do you feel about a catholic MP, Hindu MP, Methodist MP, Buddhist MP, Afro-Caribbean MP, Woman MP, Scottish MP (outside Scotland), Chinese MP.

Is there any MP who is truly completely representative of their community ?

MawBroon Thu 16-Aug-18 21:28:46

Why are you uncomfortable with a Muslim MP Diana?
Ruth Davidson is a gay woman in a single sex marriage. I am neither but I’d vote for her any day.
What has religion got to do with anything?

lemongrove Thu 16-Aug-18 21:26:07

All MP’s should ask themselves some searching questions about why they are attending such set ups as the Palestinian one honouring terrorist killers.

lemongrove Thu 16-Aug-18 21:22:58

I don’t care which religion my MP practises.

The attempt to deflect from the antisemitism within the LP
Doesn’t wash.

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 21:13:47

I disagree Diana, do you think only Muslims vote for a MP who is Muslim, only Jews vote for a MP who is a Jew?

Diana54 Thu 16-Aug-18 20:30:55

Goldsmith should keep out of this he is not exactly neutral, he has an agenda.
I am not comfortable with having a Muslim MP especially when the Muslim votes account for less than one tenth of one percent.

Joelsnan Thu 16-Aug-18 19:47:01

There is predjudice in every section of our society and this is evident within Westminster. There are some that can be identified as Britophobics, but no-one dare challenge their views as these will immediately be reversed as a counter phobia claim...it is getting ridiculous

Day6 Thu 16-Aug-18 19:39:33

Was thinking exactly the same myself M0nica, regarding 'robot'. hmm

M0nica Thu 16-Aug-18 19:25:07

Is anybody seriously suggesting that there is no Islamaphobia in the Labour party? Just because it has kept out of the limelight doesn't mean it isn't there.

The OP from Iamnotarobot reads as if her name should be Iamalabourapparatchik

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 19:06:30

Why Can’t they be honest, Sheikh was at a conference but wasn’t aware of the title of the conference, Corbyn was at the wreath laying ceremony but doesn’t know if he was involved with it.

Two Tory MP’s have lodged complaints against Sheikh , how does this make islamaphobia rampant?

A larger number of labour MP’s have lodged complaints against far more than one party member , the Labour Party is not rampant anti semetic

Let’s be fair about this .

Day6 Thu 16-Aug-18 18:59:10

Conservatives call for Lord Sheikh to be expelled from party. Peer says criticism he faces for attending same Palestinian conference as Jeremy Corbyn is motivated by Islamophobia

That's a nice way of letting Jeremy Corbyn off his 'dislike of Israel/support of Palestine' hook too. Very clever....grin

So all of a sudden, JC isn't a jew-hater, it's just all those horrid people accusing him of anti-Semitic behaviour because they suffer from Islamaphobia.

Nice try, but it doesn't wash. hmm

Sheikh's position should be investigated too.

Day6 Thu 16-Aug-18 18:51:17

YAWN

Is this the tit for tat posting of a socialist because JC has been castigated for yet another anti Semitic act?

I suspect it is.

Fancy defining Islamaphobia for us Iamnotarobot?

You may find it is rife throughout the western world unfortunately, inflamed by the frequent terrorist attacks in the name of Allah.

People do tend to not like it and sadly, peace loving Muslims feel the flak, even though they share the outrage. The same happened to innocent Irish people in this country when the IRA were active in the UK.

You are trying very hard to slate the government at every turn though robot, I'll give you that. hmm

Anniebach Thu 16-Aug-18 17:51:34

Anyone MP of member of the Lords should be sacked for attending that wreath laying ceremony , even if they claim ‘I was there but don’t think I was involved’ !

jura2 Thu 16-Aug-18 17:18:10

Exactly - Islamophobia is rampant in the Conservative Party.
