Don't count on Theresa May to stick up for our British fishermen, imagine if it was our fishermen ramming the French boats and throwing rocks at them it would be declared an international incident. But no we can't upset the French can we Mrs May we are too busy kowtowing to them.

Jalima1108 Thu 30-Aug-18 21:02:17

The area is not within the restricted boundaries. The French Government rules do not apply to the British.

It must be very annoying to the French fishermen but they need to protest to their own Government who imposed these rules on them.

I will not comment on the method of fishing as that is another matter I think.

MawBroon Thu 30-Aug-18 20:58:46

English boats do not have to respect these rules
La réglementation française impose aux pêcheurs français de ne pas exploiter la coquille entre le 15 mai et le 1er octobre. Les Anglais n’ont pas à respecter cette réglementation

MawBroon Thu 30-Aug-18 20:53:54

They sell most of those scallops back to the French as the Brits don’t know how to cook them.

Speak for yourself!

oldbatty Thu 30-Aug-18 20:52:11

sacre bleu! I have never eaten one in my life.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 30-Aug-18 19:08:31

crystaltipps I am not sure where you dine out or what your cooking skills are, but I can assure you that Brits can cook scallops extremely well. Myself, Husband all my children and their partners can and do cook scallops, never had an over cooked one yet!!!

paddyann Thu 30-Aug-18 18:46:51

for heavens sake if it wasn't for the EU there wouldn't BE any fish!Fishing boats from this isle overfished so much that stocks were badly depleted until the EU stepped in and saved them So dont blame the French or the Spanish or anyone else for low stocks it was all down to us .I got THAT information from a friend who runs a boat out of Scotland and he's fizzing that Westminster will use the fishing fleet as a bargaining tool

lemongrove Thu 30-Aug-18 16:43:03

are they huge-er than the French boats? They didn't look it in the pics. The facts are that British boats are entitled to fish there, so they did.
the French have said the same.
French fishermen and farmers have always been a bolshie violent lot, anyone remember the burning lambs?
French police always sit back and watch and do nothing.

crystaltipps Thu 30-Aug-18 16:35:24

They sell most of those scallops back to the French as the Brits don’t know how to cook them. The English boats are huge industrial boats doing loads of damage to marine life. I don’t blame the French for getting irate.

Jalima1108 Thu 30-Aug-18 16:31:39

Or sold to French restaurants?

Deedaa Thu 30-Aug-18 16:29:31

I wonder how many of the scallops trawled by British boats (causing enormous damage to the sea bed) will end up on restaurant menus as "Hand dived English Scallops"? Cynical? Moi?

oldbatty Thu 30-Aug-18 13:22:57

I hate those pesky Froggies. Send Boris.

Disputes over UK/French fishing 'rights' have been going on for a long time:

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/scallop-wars-britain-france-fishing-rights-english-channel-history-a8512871.html

The French restrict their scallop fishing season in order to conserve stocks. It seems that the UK boats not only don't observe this (despite, apparently, a 'gentlemans' agreement' being in place) but they aren't always particularly scrupulous about what they take. According to this story a UK based fishing company (Canadian owned, ironically) has been fined twice in the last 6 years for taking undersized scallops. If I were a French scallop fisherman I think I'd be as annoyed as hell about this.

Sorry, I don't subscribe to the 'my country right or wrong' philosophy.

Maggiemaybe Wed 29-Aug-18 20:00:33

Though if it weren’t so dangerous, the fact that the French “threw insults” as well is a bit reminiscent of Monty Python’s Search for the Holy Grail.

Maggiemaybe Wed 29-Aug-18 19:51:34

A spokesman for the U.K. fishing industry has said that British vessels get 6% of the scallops in the area, so who’s doing the over-fishing? confused And whatever the issues, nobody should condone ships surrounding and barging into others, and fisherman throwing rocks and metal objects at fellow fishermen.

Mamie Wed 29-Aug-18 19:42:45

Has she said anything yet POGS?
The French news is saying that the gendarmes intervened to calm things down and they are increasing patrols.

Jalima1108 Wed 29-Aug-18 19:41:27

She should call out the Royal Navy and blow the buggers out of the water.
Another Hundred Years War?

POGS Wed 29-Aug-18 19:23:07

Mamie I can see both sides as I said but is it a case of Theresa May kowtowing to the French?

MawBroon Wed 29-Aug-18 19:12:36

Could we not just send a gunboat?
Or if we don’t have any, a roll on roll off car ferry perhaps?

Mamie Wed 29-Aug-18 19:07:39

I think the point is merlot that nobody should be dredging for scallops as it causes such damage to the sea bed. I certainly wouldn't buy them and I love a coquille St Jacques.

merlotgran Wed 29-Aug-18 18:48:52

It doesn't sound fair to me either but the law needs reviewing. The British fishermen are doing nothing illegal.

Mamie Wed 29-Aug-18 18:37:48

So if the British had a rule that you couldn't take scallops between May and October off the British coast and the French came in and took them that would be absolutely OK with everybody would it?
Doesn't sound like cricket to me,

kittylester Wed 29-Aug-18 17:59:40

What POGS said!!

The rules are French rules for French Fishermen as I understand it. Our rules are different.

And, I am a Remainer, Nicenanny3!!

Mamie Wed 29-Aug-18 16:47:44

This seems to be the issue.
« La réglementation française impose aux pêcheurs français de ne pas exploiter la coquille entre le 15 mai et le 1er octobre. Les Anglais n’ont pas à respecter cette réglementation »
Doesn't sound like the British were respecting the rules.

M0nica Wed 29-Aug-18 16:40:19

This has been going on for years. Get a sense of proportion.

I seem to remember that in previous years it was six of one and half dozen of the other.

suzied Wed 29-Aug-18 16:38:40

Can't blame the EU so lets blame the French government for wanting to protect fish numbers and prevent over fishing. I don't think scallops are a basic part of the British diet, so no doubt they are sold by the Brits back to the EU or posh restaurants. Not worth getting your jingoist hats on.
