What a total embarassment she must be to her party, all this "dancing",is she SO desperate to do a deal with these African leaders that she thinks behaving in a totally UN statesmanlike manner is the way to go? As if the UK isn't enough of a laughing stock worldwide already she's certainly ramping up the joke factor .

She did look an absolute Twizzle but I have to admire her pluck at participating. She had no choice really: rock and a hard place comes to mind.
Do not admire her politics but no need to be personally hateful about anyone.

skipjive Grandad1943 I thought it was only done in Hull and then only in the early 60s. In Manchester by '65 they were much too cool for that!
She's only 61 niggly she should be a bit better!!!

PECS Fri 31-Aug-18 19:58:39

Annibach but I don't suppose TM was a leading light in the Anti Apartheid movement or boycotting SA goods. Otherwise she could have answered the Channel 4 questions more straightforwardly.

maddyone Fri 31-Aug-18 20:04:28

Although I joked that she'll be on Strictly next, I do admire her for trying. After all, everyone loved Ed Balls when he was on Strictly, even though he couldn't dance for toffee! And Anne Widdecombe! Not to mention Michael Portillo with his travel and train journeys. Strange how disliked (by some) politicians become likeable once they're removed from politics.

Some have looked realy, realy, realy silly

PECS, is that when she said Mandela was a terrorist ?

Grandma70s Fri 31-Aug-18 20:13:52

I didn’t think she looked any sillier than anyone else doing that sort of “dancing”. I’m not a fan of TM, but admire her for trying,

Grandad1943 Fri 31-Aug-18 20:19:53

Yes lemongrove, nigglynellie, we are very thankfully still fully fit but as for doing the twist, well that might take some consideration before we attempted that. confused

Grandad1943 Fri 31-Aug-18 20:25:10

trisher the skip jive continued until around 1968 in the jazz clubs in Bristol. That was the year carol and me got married and the Chinese jazz club went bust.

Not sure if there was a connection between the two. hmm

Melanieeastanglia Fri 31-Aug-18 20:33:35

Greenfinch is right. If she danced, people didn't think much of it. If she didn't dance, people may well have thought she was being standoffish.

She may have been put on the spot. Anyone can be wise after the event.

trisher Fri 31-Aug-18 20:33:46

And I always thought Hull was the only place 10 years behind the rest of the country! By '68 I was in Newcastle Go-Go ing!

paddyann Fri 31-Aug-18 20:37:22

come on,she should be savvy enough to know making a fool of herself isn't on ,not on a world stage .

nigglynellie Fri 31-Aug-18 20:39:41

TM may only be 61 but type 1 diabetes over the years isn't conducive to staying nimble. My stepfather had the same complaint and it isn't pleasant and not something to treat lightly or with contempt.

merlotgran Fri 31-Aug-18 20:41:26

I agree. I didn't see anyone holding a gun to her head. What's wrong with watching, smiling and applauding in a dignified manner?

The Queen manages it.

merlotgran Fri 31-Aug-18 20:42:05

My post was a reply to paddyann

nigglynellie Fri 31-Aug-18 20:50:39

Dear oh dear, does it really matter so much that people on here can't miss a chance to bitch about someone who was clearly trying to to be pleasant to a group of children's who had bothered to dance for her Is it THAT important that she isn't as savvy as you Grandad, or as talented as some idiot couple on that equally idiot programme Strictly!! The sneery comments from some on here are just unkind, pointless, deeply pathetic but sadly predictable!

Anniebach Fri 31-Aug-18 20:52:33

Well said niggly.

nigglynellie Fri 31-Aug-18 21:04:23

Thank you annie. I don't know, first Margaret Hodge, and now T.M. Political differences and arguments are one thing and totally acceptable and desirable, but all these personal comments are at times just too much.

Iam64 Fri 31-Aug-18 21:05:28

Well said PECs, niggly and others who suggest giving TM a bit of a break. Type 1 diabetes is an unpleasant illness, very debilitating and if fact, can become life threatening. I don't like TM's politics, but give the woman a break. she's doing her best, I wish she had a better best politically but I can't find it in me to have a go at her for joining the dancing. As someone else noticed, her face lit up with pleasure when she watched children dance.

sodapop Fri 31-Aug-18 21:06:37

Quite right nigglynellie. I agree with others the poor woman would be damned if she did and damned if she didn't.
I think she genuinely enjoyed being with the children.

Grandad1943 Fri 31-Aug-18 21:15:43

trisher, the Trad Jazz scene continued in the Bristol area longer than rest of England as there where several very well known bands that originated in Somerset.

Aker Bilk and Adge Cutler both came from there, and I believe Criss Barber came from Bath although I stand to be corrected in that.

I loved the Bristol Jazz Scene in the sixties even when the Liverpool groups took prominence. However as the Large Ballrooms such as Top Rank came about sadly the Jazz clubs succumbed to the change in music taste.

There was always a great atmosphere in those jazz clubs that was never to be repeated in the large Ballrooms regretfully.

trisher Fri 31-Aug-18 21:22:21

Hull's Jazz Club was in a hut I seem to remember. Don't think it even had a licence it was all soft drinks (and smuggled cider)

PECS Fri 31-Aug-18 21:37:44

Sorry "annie" I am not sure what you mean re TM & Mandela. I feel you often choose to ask me odd quetions to try and "pick a scab"
You know we are not on the same song sheet re JC and anti Semitism. However I know you are as firm in your resolve to discredit JC as often as you can as I am to suggest that accusations of anti Semitism are being manipulated and regurgitated to stop the growth of a more socialist Labour party. We have had the debate before, you keep revisiting it. Can we agree to disagree so we do not bore the pants off other people?

Grandad1943 Fri 31-Aug-18 21:41:07

trisher, it was the compleat opposite in Bristol as virtually all the Trad Jazz clubs with the exception of the Chinese jazz club were in pubs. They hung on for so long by becoming cheap midweek venues as opposed to the Top Rank Ballrooms which were expensive weekend famous artists venues.

But as stated many loved the atmosphere of those small jazz clubs in the sixties

Anniebach Fri 31-Aug-18 21:59:02

PECS , I asked a question, a poster said on this thread May had said Mandela was a terrorist, you posted about May being on C4 news and answering questions on C4, I asked you if that was when she said Mandela was a terrorist.

So not about you at all , just trying to learn if others heard May said what was claimed, you were the only two to discuss apartheid and SA.

So you are mistaken to think it was anything to do with you personally.
