How can we ensure views on Gransnet are given a broader hearin?

Yesterday, I suffered a long boring train journey which was running rather late. Fortunately, I had my iPad and the opportunity to read far more constructive contributions to gransnet than I normally do. I became very aware that right across our Forum subject matters, a very high percentage of the comments were invaluable in the way they disseminated information and helped to provide informed opinions.

That focussed my mind on could those contributions be put to far better use, especially by perhaps focusing decision makers to take greater account of the massive talent and ranges of views on gransnet? Particularly, those which suggest solutions that are often outside the box but extremely constructive in their approach to problem solving.

My question is simply how can gransnet members influence
decision makers and bureaucrats to help improve our society by listen more and taking greater account of what we have to say?

I suppose I am asking the impossible and seeking a utopia
which is beyond reach. Mainly Imhave to accept because our politicians and bureaucrats will always have their own agendas and rarely listen to views outside their tribal political circles. I must becoming more cynical.

"They must be getting short of members after all this time. sad"
Not at all - it's very busy and informative. There are some members from Australia and New Zealand too.
It's called WW2Talk.

Fennel; And guess which one is the dominant species here? I find it difficult to voice some opinions, especially of the humorous variety in certain forums and I've had my knuckles rapped more than once, but teachers have never frightened me! grin
Btw; can you give me a ref. to that WW2 Forum? They must be getting short of members after all this time. sad

Re thinking about having more grandads on here - I belong to a few other forums, and most of them eventually end up being dominated by one gender or another.
It depends on the main subject of the forum.
eg one is about WW2 and on there they all call eachother mate or guys etc. So I tend to be cautious about joining in.

Lancslass1: Nullabor boring? Come on! Aussies used to boast and put stickers on their car windows proclaiming "We crossed the Nullabor", and that was when large sections were unsealed. Then aeroplanes were invented! grin
On the train you get at least 3 meals each day , there are 3 days and 2 nights, lots of touristy companions, lots of reading and thinking time. No cooking and washing up! What's not to like? Not a care in the world except thinking of the damage to your bank balance when it's all over. sadIt only costs something over $6,500. one-way. but it's only money. You could try "The Ghan" Adelaide to Darwin for a change next time! wink

Thanks Elegran, I was trying to do a link but couldn't.

I think that GNHQ are the ones to give our views a wider hearing. Often they do ask for our views on certain subjects by starting threads and sometimes others, eg researchers, will start threads too.

Elegran Thu 20-Sept-18 08:53:41

The list of forum topics are on this page www.gransnet.com/forums if anyone isn't aware of the wide variety of things that are discussed. Grandchildren are not the only fruit!

Dallas/Fort Worth Airport?

Do you think the list of forums is particularly female-oriented Grandad?
Can you suggest some different topics to GNHQ which could attract more men without the necessity of approaching the Equalities Commission?

I love the night/sleeper train London >> Fort Worth.

There are lots of long train journeys in the UK as you say but my point was that I don't think any I have been on from the West Country to the far north of Scotland has ever been boring.
Maybe MarthaBeck was travelling when it was .dark.

Views and opinions are not deleted, unless they are really obnoxious and offensive.

Iam64 Wed 19-Sept-18 19:07:39

eazybee, what gets censored?
Serious question - it's a rare thing for a post to be deleted.
I can't think of any censorship but happy to be corrected.

Anniebach Wed 19-Sept-18 17:09:52

Obscene language doesn’t get censored

Legs55 Wed 19-Sept-18 16:35:18

Lancslass1 there are plenty of long train journeys in UK.

MarthaBeck not sure whether people would air their views as freely on GN. There are lots of places to get involved already. Good idea but what does GNHQ think?

Elegran Wed 19-Sept-18 16:01:59

I don't think views get censored, eazybee, if they are expressed politely and without getting personally offensive to individuals with different viewpoints.

eazybee Wed 19-Sept-18 15:46:52

People from gransnet HQ are often asked "What do gransnetters think?" on subjects in the news. They give interviews to journalists and go onto radio and TV programmes.
But HQ censor views posted on here, so they are not truly representing the opinions of all the people who contribute .

Lancslass1 Wed 19-Sept-18 14:34:20

I am not answering your question Martha Beck but I assume your long train journey was not in the UK.
I love long train journeys except for the one across the Nullarbor Plain in Australia.
Now that really is boring.

Urmstongran Wed 19-Sept-18 11:43:00

Love it BlueBelle ❗️ So true!

kittylester Wed 19-Sept-18 11:39:58

I too doubt that a different name would entice men on here though I do, mostly enjoy hearing from the men who do join in.

MOnica, you forgot rolling in money and spending it without a thought to the future of our children and grandchildren and living so long that we are costing the country a fortune.

jenpax Wed 19-Sept-18 11:21:28

We are a broad group and ages vary so much! A lot of time I read someone mentioning “our generation” or when “we were young” but there is a huge difference between the lived experiences of a GN member (like me) in late 40’s or early 50’s and those of some who are in their 80’s or 90’s (my parents generation!)

trisher Wed 19-Sept-18 10:52:40

I really don't see how GN can be used for anything except discussion. There are already a number of organisations concentrating on influencing government policies, but they do so by polling to find which causes will be best supported. Like 38 Degrees, which has lobbied on a number of things and is made up of people of all ages.

PECS Wed 19-Sept-18 09:13:43

We are a typical cross section
(though probably not as ethnically diverse as general pop) on here and our opinions wide ranging. I guess on any official poll our age group and socio economic backgrounds & different political leanings are represented. Grandparents are not an homogenous group!

Anniebach Wed 19-Sept-18 09:00:57

What next , change Womens Hour to ?

Iam64 Wed 19-Sept-18 08:14:24

Speak for your self Monica! I may be grey haired and given the results of the current on line heart test, I may be dead already but, I voted Remain. grin
