Conservative Conference

The hardline Brexitiers are holding a full second conference down the road and attracting as much publicity as the main conference.

The Guardian reported today that the 'Conservatives for Remain' fringe meeting was packed out. Brexiteers aren't getting it all their own way.

Some say we should 'bring the country together' - but how could this be possible, when the Conservatives are so so bitterly and twistingly divided- pray tell?!?

That the EU should make a real effort to meet the demands of the UK- but how could they, when the Conservatives cannot, even at this stage, agree with each other and are pulling in all directions- often for personal gain, arrogant vanity.

jura2, that is precisely the position the EU negotiators find themselves in with the Tory negotiators.

There is also the fact that in the few coherent proposals the British Negotiators have put forward, we have asked the European Union to break the rules laid out in the Maastricht and Lisbon treaties to accommodate our leaving.

That, of course, is not possible for them.

Two people who are not attending the Conservative Paarty conference are MEPs Julie Girling and Richard Ashwaorth who have been expelled from the party for not toeing the party line in the EU Parliament.

Julie Girling says "Since the decision to leave the EU, she says, “I just felt there is a lack of any space to have discussions around policy and a beginning of an atmosphere of unless you’re 100% with us you are the enemy. The party just has no place for somebody like me who didn’t agree. I am just not allowed not to agree.”

After the June 2016 vote, Girling reluctantly supported the leave result that many of her constituents had voted for. But she was soon alienated when May embarked on a policy of leaving the EU customs union and single market – “the hardest possible Brexit”.

A turning point was the 2016 party conference, where the prime minister declared that anyone who identified as a citizen of the world was a “citizen of nowhere”, which Girling describes as “that nasty speech”, and then a subsequent speech in which May set out her Brexit red lines. “When she first came out with these red lines I was really astonished,” says Girling, who had expected a softer Brexit to reflect the narrowness of the 52-48 result of the referendum.

I doubt whether many of the substantial number of Conservative supporters who agree with Julie Girling and are appalled and dismayed at the way their party is being dominated by the brextreemists will be allowed to speak, or if they do, whether the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation will cover it.

Thought that Javid gave a marvellous speech today, just the right tone and content.??

His kind of energy and enthusiasm is not what we need right now - and he wants to Mrs May prosecuted for the Checkers deal? He should be prosecuted for his lies - people in glass houses.

Johnson has today torn the Tory party completely apart. The only policy he has is " Boris Johnson". To achieve the premiership, he would see the UK "crash out" of the European with no deal whatsoever.

However, he has no answer to the problems Britain would then experience through the ports, the loss of major manufacturers to the EU and most significant, no answer to the Irish border problem.

Today, without doubt, we shall witness the same crowd that cheered Boris (The Buffoon) Johnson to the hills yesterday, today loudly clapping Theresa May during her speech. Then we shall see the obligatory waving and standing ovation for her at the end.

Theresa May is proving very resilient, much more than many had thought.It will take more than a rousing speech from Boris to oust her. Of course they were all agaog to hear what he would say yesterday, but I doubt he has changed anything by it.

IS there a "crowd" photographs I saw of Mundell had about 50 folk all moved to the front for the camera's sake .Hardly a massive turnout of the faithfull!

Well, really good speech today from May, just what was needed.
Nobody should think Boris is the better orator, he isn’t.
I think she has given the warring factions within pause for thought!

The government consider anyone earning under £30k per year to be unskilled. So that dumps nearly everyone who works in the public sector as being unskilled. How crass, insensitive and tactless. Bloody unbelievable.

Some quite clever parts to her speech, I thought.

She at least acknowledged that there is a housing shortage without taking any responsibility for the causes.

Announcing an end to the austerity agenda, while not admitting that austerity has been a mistake in the first place.

Appealing for party unity, then having a dig at Jacob Reece Mogg for his 50 years remark, and having a dig at Boris Johnson for his anglo saxon remarks to business.

Painting Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters as a terrible threat to the country and saying something supportive to Dianne Abbot.

She seems to be almost relaxed about a no deal brexit, appealing to patriotism, and painting us as a sort of plucky little Britain.

It is rather desperate tactics though to basically say that the alternative is worse, you had better stick with us. I wish more people would have more than a dig at Boris and JRM, they are toxic and anyone who believes that they care is a fool, at least Teresa May tries to look as if she cares. I do feel for her though, what an absolute shower she is surrounded by, backstabbers or creeps, what a choice. If I was her ( thankfully I am not) I would gather them all, give them an ultimatum; we either drop this whole Brexit farrago altogether and admit that it just won't work or we go to the country and Corbyn gets elected. That is what is boils down to, and I know which way I would vote. The first person on here to use phrases such as 'The Will of The People' in their answer gets a forfeit
