Aldi have announced a large expansion and are about to employ a further 1000 members of staff. They aren't worried about Brexit then.

Scuse me... there aren't 7 pages on this thread. Just saying....

Indeed you did Fennel- but sometimes I wonder if Brexiters ever read answers, especially those they would rather ignore ;)
Aldi and Lidle are BUSINESSES - and very clever at finding gaps, opportunities and niches - which is what make them so successful.

Still, I cannot fathom why those who want Britain to regain control from the EU, would flock to Aldi and Lidle for a few quid (usually lost again by impulse buying from middle of the shelf 'never knew I could live without it' kind of bargain) and watch their own go down the pan. But it is their prerogative. Just weird.

Fennel Fri 12-Oct-18 15:43:10

Which is what I said on page 7 of this thread.

Because they know that British firms will find it difficult to import food- and that prices will rise at the same time as people will be hit hard in the pocket. Massive opportunity for them to fill the gap created by the fall of British food distributors - Perfect.

I had 2 queries in a post I made dated Wed 10-Oct-18 22:19:1 but I am still interested to know the answer to one in particular regarding this thread:-

jura

" Why do you think Lidl and Aldi are expanding in the UK ? You would think given your appraisal of all things Brexit related they would be running for the hills."
--

There could well come a time both Lidl and Aldi reverse their decision but until then jura I am interested in why you think Aldi and Lidl are expanding in the UK given your obvious stance.

Good point ethel

There is a big difference between being poor that you have to shop at aldi and having the .choice to shop at aldi to save a bit or go to a more expensive shop if you wish.
You're absolutely right ethelbags, but even for those who are on a really tight budget and have no money to spare, shopping at Aldi or Lidl means that they get excellent value for money, excellent quality produce and their money goes that little bit further than if they'd shopped at Sainsbury's or Tesco.

MissAdventure Thu 11-Oct-18 22:53:41

Actually my daughter and I cut down on trips to Aldi as we were spending too much on all the bargains.

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 22:50:41

Ooh yes, I'd forgotten about the "Greek weeks" and "Italian weeks" Jalima!
Has anyone else tried Aldi's Crispy Duck with Hoi sin sauce and pancakes? 20 pancakes, loads of Hoi sin sauce and a full half duck for less than £4.50. Less than half the price of a takeaway.

Thanks for the link PECS
I notice that they are adaptable as well (thinking of Lidl, as we don't have an Aldi). At one time they just seemed to sell own brand produce, but now stock popular, if a limited range, of items.

As there is now more demand for GF foods, I notice they have a reasonable stand in our quite small Lidl.
And, of course, there are the centre aisles, full of DIY stuff that DH didn't realise he needed until he saw it, so we don't save that much if we do go there.
Then there is 'Greek week' etc etc.

MissAdventure Thu 11-Oct-18 22:36:36

That's because their staff are expected to do everything.
I know, because I've twice been shortlisted to go and spend a day being assessed to see if I'm suitable for them to employ me.
Each time I've changed my mind at the last minute, so I expect that's my big opportunity gone now. grin

merlotgran Thu 11-Oct-18 22:18:28

I'm sure they employ fewer people because it's a 'no frills' supermarket with an emphasis on 'speed shopping.'

PECS Thu 11-Oct-18 22:15:02

Good to hear Missadventure though the link I posted suggests they also employ fewer people compared to other stores.

Slurp, munch smile

At Christmas, Aldi have fab joints of fresh meat "for the festive season". For the last couple of years I've bought a large fresh gammon that comes in a tin foil tray, with a pouch of orange and dill sauce dressing, ready to shove in the oven. On both occassions, I've had to fight to get a slice of it because it's snaffled up by guests on our Boxing Day buffet. Last year it was £3.99. note to self, buy 2 this year

So far so good!

MissAdventure Thu 11-Oct-18 22:02:55

Wages are higher at Aldis than any of the other supermarkets.

PECS Thu 11-Oct-18 21:59:00

I totally appreciate the need to keep 'weekly shopping basket' at an affordable level.
However I do worry that the prices are the result of lower wages/ supplier payments at lower end of the chain rather than reduction in big profits at the top of the chain. I have not researched this just a hunch. Hope I am wrong!

lemongrove Thu 11-Oct-18 21:54:05

Yes, I noticed the middle was full of random bits and bobs, will have to have a better look ( at all the things I don’t need
But may want!)

merlotgran Thu 11-Oct-18 21:53:47

Jack's in Chatteris, Chewbacca. It's about ten miles away so I won't be bothering to try it but our local news was all over it because the large premises has been empty since Tesco closed some of their stores a few years ago. It hadn't even opened!!

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 21:50:55

The middle aisle are a great lemon! You can find all manner of things there that you never knew you needed! Most of my kitchen equipment is from there and, 10 years on, its still going strong. I once bought a steam mop from there for £17.50 And a few weeks later it started to leak. Took it back and was given a full refund, no questions asked. Even my walking boots are from there! grin

Chewbacca Thu 11-Oct-18 21:47:17

Do you mean Jack's opened near you merlot?
Must admit I never go in Tesco if I can help it and can't see me shopping on Jack's either, unless they're more competitive.

merlotgran Thu 11-Oct-18 21:44:37

It's about ten miles from where I live. Somebody on local telly did a price comparison and Aldi was still cheaper.

lemongrove Thu 11-Oct-18 21:42:24

Ah, that’s interesting (Jacks) wonder if it will take off?
