‘Grenfell’ bonfire

I’m disgusted at what I’ve seen on the evening news. People made a ‘effigy’ of Grenfell tower and put it on a bonfire, laughing and making jokes about it. Some faces were clearly visible on the video and I hope they are all taken to court for hate crime. What is it coming to when a crowd of British people think that the deaths of others in an horrific fire is a joke?

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Nov-18 21:05:33

I did think it may not be broadcast (posted at the start of the thread) but it has.

If they are not prosecuted if there has not been a crime according to the DPP, then they will surely be named and shamed.

Bridgeit Tue 06-Nov-18 21:03:25

Yes Baggs it may be a good idea to watch the clip that this thread is about. Words on here can only tell you what happened, seeing it conveys the nature of the incident allowing a better understanding of it.

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Nov-18 21:01:25

that is what they do- what they enjoy doing ...and they pm each other in between, to egg each other on.

do you mean those who accuse others of saying things they did not jura?

Baggs Tue 06-Nov-18 21:00:08

iam, I have not gone to any extreme. Nothing I have said is extreme.

Baggs Tue 06-Nov-18 20:53:08

ellanvannin, I think putting a firework in a person's clothing is far worse than videoing a bonfire, even if the video does show up horrible attitudes.

" that is what they do- what they enjoy doing ...and they pm each other in between, to egg each other on. "

You are making false accusations !

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Nov-18 20:50:30

Well, I think that is very sensible jura

POGS Tue 06-Nov-18 20:49:44

Said the woman who called posters ' disgusting racists'.

Sigh.

Maryeliza and oldbags you are perverting what posters are saying about the effigy burning of Grenfell Tower.

NONE of the mentioned hate filled occurrences are remotely appropriate !

It has bugger all to do with posters being left or right wing either !

Jalima1108 Tue 06-Nov-18 20:48:54

The majority of people who died had brown skin. The disgusting cardboard figures which were made had brown skin. Think very carefully now......can you join the dots?
Yes, I do realise that oldbatty

I am perfectly able to join the dots oldbatty but apparently you are not.
Death has no barriers, people of many nationalities died at Grenfell, the simpletons who did this portrayed only brown paper cut-outs, and I havealready said how appalling I think this act was.

Grenfell reduced me to tears, this stupid and moronic act has just made me angry and outraged.
It makes no difference to me what colour were the people who died, to make a mockery of them is sickening.

Baggs Tue 06-Nov-18 20:48:31

what are your actual thoughts ,what are you trying to say or defend? I would genuinely like to understand

bridgeit, I've posted my thoughts. I think what I've said is clear even though some people don't seem to understand. I'm not defending anything.

I'll try to be clearer:

Without having seen the video in question, I gather that it is horrible and is thought by some to be racist. I accept that.

While accepting that I'm wondering if the police really need to be involved.

I also thought, as I explained before, that presented differently, e.g. as a critique of the failings (wrong cladding, etc) that allowed the awful Grenfell Tower fire to happen as it did, burning an effigy of the Tower could have been used as a powerful political comment just as burning effigies of Guy Fawkes is to people who think about it.

don't let them - listen to my doctor. She has worked in the UK and is a good friend - I showed here some of the threads. She shook her head and said - 'why do you let them do that to you - walk away' - and I have. Will continue to do so - life is too short.

oldbatty Tue 06-Nov-18 20:34:43

actually, you have reduced me to tears, so well done.

Chewbacca Tue 06-Nov-18 20:34:38

Maryeliza I have not seen one single post on this thread that has not condemned the appallingly disgusting video of the effigy; not a single one. There have been discussions where posters have attempted to get their heads around why anyone would do such a thing, but no one has sought to justify or qualify it. You don't have the privilege of being the only one to have empathy, sympathy or distress over this shocking and disgraceful act so get off your high horse of moral superiority please.

oldbatty Tue 06-Nov-18 20:32:49

oldbatty

You are the gift that keeps on giving.

You nasty nasty person.

maryeliza54 Tue 06-Nov-18 20:28:02

Yes and the one politician killed was murdered by a white male from the extreme right

maryeliza54 Tue 06-Nov-18 20:25:31

Absolutely old. The only hypocrisy I see on this thread is people on the right who can’t bring themselves to condemn the unacceptable behaviour of the GT effigy burning without resort to whatsboutety. No acceptance of how this act differs qualitatively from attacks on politicians ( many by other politicians themselves) Just coming up with a ragbag of unacceptable behaviour elsewhere wont wash - it will not distract from the main point of this thread however much they wish it.

Chewbacca Tue 06-Nov-18 20:20:24

hundreds of innocent children DIED in a fire which could have been prevented.

The fatalities were bad enough without exaggerating oldbatty. 72 poor souls, children and adults, lost their lives in the fire, not "hundreds". Let's keep it factually correct when we're discussing loss of life, please.

oldbatty Tue 06-Nov-18 20:16:11

jaw dropping? Please tell me if your jaw is dropping.

oldbatty Tue 06-Nov-18 20:15:24

What is wrong with you? hundreds of innocent children DIED in a fire which could have been prevented.

NONE of the politicians have died ( with one exception)

It is not the same.

Chewbacca Tue 06-Nov-18 20:10:43

POGS your post at 19.49 is absolutely spot on, I agree with you completely. The double standards of what is obscene, outrageous and utterly unacceptable is jaw dropping on this thread.

oldbatty Tue 06-Nov-18 20:08:52

You don't comment on vile placards and effigies of politicians with a noose around their neck or a knife in their back so I must presume you find such things of no contention either?

Why don't you start a thread on such matters, then I can join in?

oldbatty Tue 06-Nov-18 20:06:50

Have the people you mentioned been burnt to death in a dangerous, overcrowded building or have I missed that on the news?

oldbatty Tue 06-Nov-18 20:05:31

You make my point for me , politicians are ' fair game ' to some.

*I don't think the burning of effigies of Theresa May, Jacob Rees Mogg and Boris Johnson holding a severed head of Theresa May remotely amusing.

Nor do I find a crowd of people shouting ' Burn him '
meaning Johnson , remotely appropriate, you obviously do not agree*

What a very strange presumption based on what exactly?

We are not discussing politicians, we are discussing a racially motivated hate crime.

EllanVannin Tue 06-Nov-18 19:59:12

Maybe because of Corbyn's anti-Semitism stance it would smack of double standards if Labour opened their mouths.
