I have just watched this Iceland advert on Utube -Youtu.be/Jdpsp11W12o.

I would rather have this screened than some of the other tacky and twee Christmas adverts which have already started.

Do you wise gransnetters on here think it has been banned because it is true and an uncomfortable watch for all big business out there who would rather just continue to sell us stuff that we do not need, whilst destroying this beautiful planet and its amazing wildlife at the same time.

GG sometimes it’s just too overwhelming to look at the overall picture and focusing on one aspect can be much more effective and lead to an understanding of the bigger picture

It's doing well. I am pleased.

I've seen it posted on FB many times and heard it been talked about then I have my catch up on GN and it's here again.

I've seen this ad more because of friends posting it than I have any other Christmas ads.

For years I've tried to be careful and avoid Palm Oil but it isn't always easy as manufacturers put it in things I'd never expect it to be in.

I hope this ad makes some difference.

I've just looked at it through the link. I agree that it should not be banned but, IMHO, it's a poor example of rhyme to get the message across. I could have written better myself.
The ad centres on one animal, whereas it could have been more hard-hitting had it encompassed the wholesale destruction of our environment.

Really it is no more " political" than than all adverts encouraging us to live our lives in a particular way: you need this to be happy, buy these and life will be great etc etc. All ads are selling a lifestyle of one sort or another whilst the true intention is simply to increase the profits of the company.
One could argue all consumer ads. are feeding the belief that rampant capitalism, new is good, replace last years model etc etc, is the best political solution for us all. confused

Yes I’ve seen it and shared , everyone should. Not sure if it is true that it is banned though.. I’m really conscious of products with unsustainable palm oil in them. Plastics are also my pet hate. Gradually going back to things I used to use, like hand soaps instead of liquid soap, cloths for cleaning down in the kitchen rather than wipes.

Meriel Sat 10-Nov-18 10:03:26

I've shared this on my FB page. Great advert and I agree that the ban has misfired. Will have to explain what Iceland is to my FB Friends in Australia though I think.

Hm999 Sat 10-Nov-18 10:00:58

Surely it's political rather than (party) Political.

Many thanks to GrannyGravy and to your 12 year old, what a lovely DGD she must be, Gillybob

I have just watched this “banned” advert via YouTube - I think it’s so beautiful and clever, but it made my eyes fill with tears! Why on earth has it been banned? “Head in the sand” attitude springs to mind. No doubt the WWF advert will soon be banned too! I despair.

Nanny41 Sat 10-Nov-18 09:45:31

Thanks for the link Gillybob, I hadnt seen the advert, but think it is very well done and brings home what we are doing to our planet.Well done Iceland.I will share on Facebook, it shouldnt be banned.

To be totally cynical ,it was probably stopped by lots of big retailers, as it could possibly make people change their shopping habits ,!to be even more cynical maybe Iceland have done it to exploit people's awareness and increase their profits.
I for one buy my meat ECT from local farm shops and butcher's.i appreciate not everyone can do this but,how many people having seen this will change their shopping habits ?

Judie Sat 10-Nov-18 09:31:05

There is a petition on Facebook

Yes it is true I stopped buying any products with palm oil added several years ago when our son went out to Borneo to help build a sanctuary for the many Orangutans who were made homeless by theses clearances, look v carefully on products as sometimes it states vegetable oil which is really palm oil, it’s in most convenience foods.

Sweetie222 Sat 10-Nov-18 09:23:27

This has been a very clever piece of marketing. If it had been shown on TV I wouldn't have seen it .. fast forward over adverts.

With the fuss generated I have seen it and been moved by it very much.

Other banned items that probably would have been forgotten/ignored if not banned .. Lady Chatterley's lover. Relax ... people still wearing t shirts that say Relax! I'm sure people can think of many others

There is a petition for the Iceland advert it is on Change.org please please sign it, everyone needs to see this absolutely brilliant advert. Iceland you are amazing standing up to all the big boys who incidentally are just being bullies. Let’s all sign this so it can be back on our tv’s before Christmas, it’s incredible the power people have when we stand together. Then let’s see if we can reduce the amount of palm oil we use!!!

Brownsgirl Sat 10-Nov-18 09:12:32

Already shared on Facebook . Yes it should be shown as true and a thought provoking ad is just what we need at Christmas. What is political about it? Seems regulators got this one wrong .

Judyn Sat 10-Nov-18 09:09:48

I love the advert! Should be used anyway, whether it's Christmas or not.

PECS Sat 10-Nov-18 09:02:59

I have shared it in FB too! Sad that truthful concepts are denied and damaging ones allowed to proceed. Hands up whose Xmas day is anything like the adverts ???

Luckygirl Sat 10-Nov-18 08:52:29

I cannot see why it should be banned - on what grounds?

Squiffy's post at 17.04 takes you there.
Just double checked and others have disappeared!
Over 170 000 signatures.

Grannybags Fri 09-Nov-18 21:14:00

Just watched the ad and thought it was brilliant. The ban has back fired as we record most things and fast forward the adverts so wouldn't have seen it normally.

Thanks to GrannyGravy for posting and *gillybob for the link.

I'm off to sign the petition now
