Scottish Independence

Sticking my head above the parapet here - preparing to be shot down in flames. My question is this - if Scotland wish to be truly independent, why do they wish to stay in the EU? I don't understand why the SNP are so keen to be independent of Westminster, but are still willing to be dictated to by Brussels. Can someone north of the border please enlighten me? This is a genuine question, I'm not posting just to fan the flames of proud Scots, I love Scotland. Now putting my hard hat on ……… smile

lemon GA put fake news in inverted commas and it was obvious how she was using the phrase.

lemongrove Fri 30-Nov-18 17:12:41

To say that both leaders are Leavers may not be fair as T May is simply implementing the results of the referendum
( she was a Remain voter) and Corbyn says he voted Remain.

lemongrove Fri 30-Nov-18 17:10:09

Actually it was Granny23 who mentioned fake news first, and Jane was just responding to it...
We need to hear both sides it makes it interesting.Leaving the EU makes it just about impossible now for Scotland to vote to go it alone I would have thought.

Granny23 Fri 30-Nov-18 17:08:04

But the TV debate is about Brexit and the plan is to have only Theresa May and Jeremy Corbin taking part - both Leavers. I do think that their should also be a third voice involved speaking for remainers. If not Nicola Sturgeon, then Ian Blackford, who IS an MP at Westminster and leader of the 3rd largest Party in the house.

Izabella As you are in London, you are more used to talk of MPs (Members of the Westminster Parliament) than of MSPs (Members of the Scottish Parliament) There are also MEPs, (Members of the European Parliament), of course, and despite the vast amount of general ignorance that exists about MEPs, in all three cases they are democratically elected. I am surprised, however, that her name didn't ring a bell with you as First Minister in Scotland. Scots are aware of the identity of the Prime Minister of the UK.

Nicola Sturgeon is not an MP at Westminster, so if the TV debate concerned purely English matters she would not be invited.

maryeliza54 Fri 30-Nov-18 16:39:16

Gosh we’re so lucky to have you Jane10 do tell us the unimpeachable source of all your information. FWIW do you have to use that awful Trumpian phrase ‘fake news’ when what you are probably talking about is different opinions and interpretations.

Izabella Fri 30-Nov-18 15:05:14

Thank you ladies, that all makes sense. I was confused by a news article that stated Nicola Sturgeon would not be invited to a TV debate as she is not an MP. I live in England.

Jane10 Fri 30-Nov-18 14:41:30

As long as Granny23 posts her fake news as spun by the SNPs expensive spin doctors I'll continue to inform the GNers of what's really going on.

Elegran Fri 30-Nov-18 13:47:36

Izabella Do you live in the Uk or elsewhere?

mcem Fri 30-Nov-18 13:36:00

Ooops sorry granny23. Crossed posts!

mcem Fri 30-Nov-18 13:34:34

Izabella she is an elected MSP and as the leader of the largest party in the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood) she is First Minister and therefore spokesman.
You may recall that South of the border, Ruth Davidson impressed to the extent that some thought she could be the next leader of the Tory party.
BUT she too is an elected MSP and does not sit in HoC. Therefore as leader of the Scottish Tories in Holyrood she is ineligible to lead the
UK /English/Welsh tories

Granny23 Fri 30-Nov-18 13:31:38

Izabella Nichola Sturgeon is an elected MSP (Member of the Scottish Parliament) and as the elected Leader of the SNP - the largest party in the Scottish Government - she is First Minister of Scotland. Just as TM is Leader of the Conservatives, the largest Party in the House of Commons, and therefore Prime Minister of the UK.

Elegran Fri 30-Nov-18 13:27:21

That post was to Izabella

Elegran Fri 30-Nov-18 13:26:27

You don't count being elected to the Scottish Parliament and being First Minister (the equivalent of a Prime Minister) as a qualification for being a spokesperson for Scotland, then?

Whether Scotland should be completely separated from the UK is a different question - but devolution and democratic elections mean that she IS the Scottish leader.

Granny23 Fri 30-Nov-18 13:24:51

What a rubbish thread this has become, reduced to personal sniping and pointing out typos.

However I will continue to post, not in the spirit of point scoring but rather to counter 'fake news' with verifiable facts for the benefit of those (like the OP) who are genuinely curious.

I also saw the CNN report from Glasgow and was struck by the assumption in the reporting that a UK brexit would inevitably lead to the secession of Scotland from the UK. Particularly liked the last gentleman interviewed who stated that he had voted NO in the last Indyref but would be a strong YES in the 2nd one because of the way Westminster had ridden roughshod over the wishes of people in Scotland with regard to Brexit.

Also had a bit of a chuckle at TM boasting that she had 13 MPs in Scotland grin

Izabella Fri 30-Nov-18 13:16:16

I have my cloak and shield ready. I don't usually post on political forums but I have a genuine question.

Nicola Sturgeon appears (to me) to be a spokesperson for Scotland and the SNP but is not an elected MP. Can someone explain please?

Jane10 Fri 30-Nov-18 11:03:22

paddyann I thought you'd flounce?
Obviously the spin doctors are giving value for money after all they managed to promote a few findings from one of the only 2 areas of Scotland which actually voted to leave at the last referendum. I'm happy for you but not for Scotland with SNP trying to run it.

MaizieD Fri 30-Nov-18 11:02:05

Oooh, me being dim! Sorry blush

maryeliza54 Fri 30-Nov-18 10:42:58

Exactly MD that was the point I was (trying) to make - that lemon accuses you of pedantry and then posts my typo( which as any fule knows is against GN etiquette)

MaizieD Fri 30-Nov-18 10:39:12

Err. I hate to say this, maryeliza, but it was your typo originally. blush

Just being pedantic; never let it be said that I show any favouritism

maryeliza54 Fri 30-Nov-18 10:31:26

Youbrself? ? lemon and you accuse MD of being a pedant? Would you like me to explain the typo? grin

paddyann Fri 30-Nov-18 10:30:52

BBC news just reported
The financial loss to the UK due to BREXIT, is equal to the hit losing Scotland would be.
Hope someone recorded it folks
Subsidised ?? Seems westminster has been telling porkies.....as we all knew .THATS why they are desperate to hang onto us .Independence support is rising by the day also reported by CNN yesterday after their Brexit interviews in Glasgow .

maryeliza54 Fri 30-Nov-18 10:28:37

You might at least ask nicely grin .

lemongrove Fri 30-Nov-18 10:23:26

lemongrove Fri 30-Nov-18 10:22:48
