Sorry, varian, it is an anxious time for some of us and we do have Gransnetters who may live in the areas affected.

sad

There is a limit to what any one of us can do about disasters on the other side of the world. If they are natural catastrophes, like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or tsunamis, all we can do is donate to charities which send help, eg through DEC.

If the disaster is man-made, eg due to climate change or pollution we can, in addition to donating, campaign to highlight the environmental damage, and of course lead our own lives as responsibly as we can.

The fact that we as individuals can only make a small difference does not prevent us having compassion for anyone caught up in a disaster, and of course, if we have friends or family there, we will be much more aware of the tragedy.

varian you wondered on the Brexit thread why people weren't worried.

Well, you don't sound worried about people in Australia right now, only about the possible reasons for these catastrophic fires and for the floods.

Same question back to you now:
What are you doing about it?

We know, * varian*, we know.

But that is not helping for those anxious about their families right now.

Most living might be on the first floor but so many live in the bush and first floor, second floor, whatever, will make no difference.

Do you not remember the fires approaching Sydney a few years ago Davidhs - don't be too complacent about Brisbane. Yes, I have family there too.

Aircon is not working that well at 43C

Sister lives in Brisbane which is not a leafy city like Sydney, so no fire risk there. Floods are a big issue her former house used to flood every other year, now moved to higher ground.
Aussies are a tough crowd in a big flood its get the "tinnie" out ( tin boat) and plenty of food for the Barbie, most living is on first floor and power is overhead to keep the aircon working.

The European Union says it is aiming to become the first major economy to go "climate neutral" by 2050.

My daughter's in Sydney so will be having the rain. Her telephone is dodgy at the moment as it's been struck twice by lightening------and it's said it doesn't strike twice in the same place, well it has/did.

There has been a significant increase in extreme weather world-wide. What more evidence does anyone need that global warming due to human behaviour is the cause?

For those with friends and family in Queensland and to Australian Gransnetters, I hope all stay safe.
I know that the temperature has been 40C+ recently and they are desperate for rain.

In the meantime, there are floods in Sydney.
