A leadership contest!

So now Mrs May is going to face a vote of no confidence! I find it difficult to believe that a political party would take this action at this time! She’s done well with this poisoned chalice and who could do better than she has?

Parliament has reached an impasse and is split just like the country.

This to my mind is a national emergency and maybe it’s time for a wartime style cabinet so that some consensus could be reached about the way forward.

What a mess!

The Blair /Brown got something right, only time in the history of the party that labour won three consecutive elections. But -

lemongrove, Jeremy Corbyn may well be relieved of the leadership if the Labour Party had a poor result at the next General Election. However, it would not return to the party of Tony Blair or Gordon Brown as they took the subscription and affiliation money off often poorly paid grassroots members for many years and gave them absolutely nothing in return.

Even if Labour do badly at the next election, those grassroots members will still retain the present policies I feel, for the party now belongs fully to them and in that the principles surrounding those policies are sacrosanct and will not change.

The above I very much respect.

lemongrove Thu 13-Dec-18 19:06:12

Don’t mention it! Oh, you already have done.grin

What an amazingly insightful post lemon thanks for sharing.

lemongrove Thu 13-Dec-18 18:51:32

They will soon get rid of Corbyn if he loses the next GE...
Whenever that may be.

If the brexiters have their way we could out-do Mauritania, become Ruritania, the pantomime country which gives everyone a good laugh.

crystaltipps Thu 13-Dec-18 18:37:39

Every country in the world is in some kind of trade bloc. Apart from Mauritania.

GrannyGravy13, Anniebach, Jeremy Corbyn along with the the elected Executive Committees have given the Labour district, regional and constituency parties far greater powers and in that the elected members of parliament are answerable and responsible to them.

The various Labour movement conferences set national policies for those bodies to follow and all MPs are expected to subscribe those policies also.

And that the way it should be.

mabon1 Thu 13-Dec-18 18:27:15

Dont trust any of them!!

Anniebach Thu 13-Dec-18 17:59:32

True GrannyGravy

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:56:00

Unfortunately JC has not got the backing of the MPs of the Labour Party, neither has TM.

maryeliza54 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:54:39

Well no other Conservatives on here ( including annie* ?) seems to think there’s anything wrong with giving the whip back to those two apologies for men do they?

Anniebach Thu 13-Dec-18 17:54:31

Challenge? No one can stand against UNITE and Momentum. Unless they want to lose their position as MP ,

Grandad1943 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:48:19

GrannyGravy13, you are correct in stating that a vote of no confidence was brought against Jeremy Corbyn by the Parliamentary Labour Party in 2016. However, in the way it was brought forward it had no constitutional legitimacy under the rules of the Labour Party and broader Labour movement.

However, Jeremy Cobyn offered himself up for re-election and won that Ballot with an increased and overwhelming majority.

The Labour party then went on to achieve a national membership of over half a million.

Some leader to challenge as those that tried it found out.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:47:03

Sorry but any Conservatives out there who are not criticising the mess the party is in at the moment must either be delusional or partaking of a total news blackout!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:44:14

MaizieD - I feel you have misinterpreted my post, free of the EU the UK can have more options to choose from whom they wish to trade freely with, without the constraints of the EU.

maryeliza54 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:42:17

Well try being on GN the tiniest bit left of centre and you’re a Marxist-Trotskyite-Corbynists card carrying member of Momentum GG . The main difference is that many of us on the left are actually able to criticise the left but sadly the right on GN generally don’t criticise their own.

Rosina Thu 13-Dec-18 17:41:21

Aepgirl not only do they not want us to leave, and need the billions we pay in, they have to make this severance as bloody and painful as possible as there are other countries who would follow suit if the EU saw us off with a cheery wave, a decent agreement and no hard feelings. That was never, ever going to happen.

EllanVannin Thu 13-Dec-18 17:37:58

1 billion of overseas aid is counted in what we pay to the EU.

Does Pakistan need over £400 million of our money every year ?

Ethiopia= over £350 million ?

Afghanistan=over £300 million ?

Nigeria=over £250 million ?

Syria=over £250 million ?

Sierra Leone=over £200 million ?

South Sudan=over £200 million ?

Tanzania=over £200 million ?

India=£200 million ?

Bangladesh=£200 million ?

MaizieD Thu 13-Dec-18 17:36:49

Relying on and limited by one “trade block” in the 21st century is rather narrow minded.

Well, that's really weird, GG because most countries seem to be very keen to join trade blocs in the 21st C.

There are loads of them:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_bloc

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:33:20

It’s hard owning up to being a Conservative on gn, especially as they are not performing “particularly well” at the moment (“tongue in cheek”).

maryeliza54 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:29:45

Well thanks for saying that GG it’s rare for a Conservative on GN to criticise their own side - I think it was a disgrace and imagine how the women involved must feel?

MaizieD Thu 13-Dec-18 17:28:44

^ So does foreign aid, only more^

As I understand it, the portion of our EU contribution which goes towards EU foreign aid (i.e to countries outside the EU) is actually counted as part of our foreign aid budget.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:26:38

As the fifth biggest economy, why do we need the EU anymore than the rest of the world?

Relying on and limited by one “trade block” in the 21st century is rather narrow minded.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Dec-18 17:22:24

Oops add Jeremy Corbyn
