It makes sobering reading, particularly if we remember the threats to the BBC's Laura Kunesberg for just doing her job over Brexit.

"Many of the incidents have been carried out by the same small group of protesters wearing yellow hi-vis jackets, modelled on the French gilets jaunes movements, who like to livestream their actions on Facebook. They have also blocked Westminster Bridge and harassed other politicians and journalists, including shouting racist and sexist abuse at a Sky News team."

These people were on the winning side, remember.

Is this our future? Caught between violent intimidation and being dragged over a Brexit cliff?

The sight of all those grown men yelling "scum" at an elected female MP was distasteful in the extreme. In view of what happened to Jo Cox, it is inexplicable that the police did not do more. Yet again, I am puzzled at the attitude of Brexiteers who are - after all - going to get entirely their way trying to shout down anybody who tries to point out the problems that could arise. The Speaker would have been criticised if he had stayed silent on the matter. I wonder if the real driving force to stop a second knowledge-based referendum is precisely the fear that idiots like those men will cause or spark violence? What a mess.

But one of you lot might well have done so lemon

I always wonder why "dead cats". Are their lives not of value? Why not dead dogs, or hamsters, or gerbils or something? I know, that's by the by....

I do think if you become a politician you have to expect a certain degree of barracking but hatred of females and sexist remarks are vile. There are many in the HOC who think women are an easy target and it is time they were outed, named and shamed. Yes Maw Bercow sits at the top of that heap.

...then Varian wouldn’t have started this thread.

maryeliza54 Mon 07-Jan-19 22:18:14

Now if she was pro Brexit and she was being barracked like this.........

StillGame Mon 07-Jan-19 21:16:42

A hundred years ago she would have been having dead cats and ‘brick-bats, (a real brick tied to a wooden handle) thrown at her. Not because she was a woman, but because that’s what political campaigning involved in the past.

lemongrove Mon 07-Jan-19 21:09:18

Yes Maw Bercow should look to his own behaviour!

lemongrove Mon 07-Jan-19 21:08:21

I agree with you StillGame all politicians need to grow a thick skin.
It is not a ‘hate crime’ to barrack an MP.... if it was, half the country would have to be arrested.

StillGame Mon 07-Jan-19 21:04:13

I do like Anna Soubry personally (and was sorry that Teresa May sacked her as a junior minister) and agree with her over brexit, but she is a politician and so needs to grow a thicker skin.

It was disgusting, the way those people chanted whilst she was being interviewed. Hate crime I would have thought. Needs knocking on the head NOW.

Commons Speaker John Bercow said he was worried about a "pattern" of women MPs and journalists being targeted

Well he knows what to do about it, starting with his own attitude

Tory MP Anna Soubry received cross-party support after pro-Brexit supporters repeatedly accused her of being a Nazi during a broadcast interview.

Another video, posted on Twitter, caught several people chanting the same chant, alleging they were associated with pro-Brexit group Leave Means Leave.

MP Anna Soubry has criticised the police for failing to intervene after she was verbally abused by protesters outside Parliament.

The Conservative ex-minister was accused "of being a Nazi", while being interviewed on the BBC News channel.

She called for the protesters, who were wearing yellow vests, to be prosecuted under public order legislation.

Commons Speaker John Bercow said he was worried about a "pattern" of women MPs and journalists being targeted.

Raising the issue in the House of Commons, Labour's Mary Creagh said the "really vile, misogynistic thuggery" that had been seen was not an isolated incident.

She accused far-right groups of re-playing Monday's clip and others like it on social media sites to "raise revenue for their trolling activities".

Ms Soubry, the pro-European MP for Broxtowe who supports another Brexit referendum, was subjected to verbal abuse while being interviewed by the BBC's Simon McCoy.
