MP Anna Soubry has criticised the police for failing to intervene after she was verbally abused by protesters outside Parliament.

The Conservative ex-minister was accused "of being a Nazi", while being interviewed on the BBC News channel.

She called for the protesters, who were wearing yellow vests, to be prosecuted under public order legislation.

Commons Speaker John Bercow said he was worried about a "pattern" of women MPs and journalists being targeted.

Raising the issue in the House of Commons, Labour's Mary Creagh said the "really vile, misogynistic thuggery" that had been seen was not an isolated incident.

She accused far-right groups of re-playing Monday's clip and others like it on social media sites to "raise revenue for their trolling activities".

Ms Soubry, the pro-European MP for Broxtowe who supports another Brexit referendum, was subjected to verbal abuse while being interviewed by the BBC's Simon McCoy.

Tory MP Anna Soubry received cross-party support after pro-Brexit supporters repeatedly accused her of being a Nazi during a broadcast interview.

Another video, posted on Twitter, caught several people chanting the same chant, alleging they were associated with pro-Brexit group Leave Means Leave.

Well he knows what to do about it, starting with his own attitude

Gonegirl Mon 07-Jan-19 19:13:27

It was disgusting, the way those people chanted whilst she was being interviewed. Hate crime I would have thought. Needs knocking on the head NOW.

StillGame Mon 07-Jan-19 21:04:13

I do like Anna Soubry personally (and was sorry that Teresa May sacked her as a junior minister) and agree with her over brexit, but she is a politician and so needs to grow a thicker skin.

lemongrove Mon 07-Jan-19 21:08:21

I agree with you StillGame all politicians need to grow a thick skin.
It is not a ‘hate crime’ to barrack an MP.... if it was, half the country would have to be arrested.

lemongrove Mon 07-Jan-19 21:09:18

Yes Maw Bercow should look to his own behaviour!

StillGame Mon 07-Jan-19 21:16:42

A hundred years ago she would have been having dead cats and ‘brick-bats, (a real brick tied to a wooden handle) thrown at her. Not because she was a woman, but because that’s what political campaigning involved in the past.

maryeliza54 Mon 07-Jan-19 22:18:14

Now if she was pro Brexit and she was being barracked like this.........

lemongrove Mon 07-Jan-19 22:20:18

...then Varian wouldn’t have started this thread.

Day6 Mon 07-Jan-19 22:23:39

I always wonder why "dead cats". Are their lives not of value? Why not dead dogs, or hamsters, or gerbils or something? I know, that's by the by....

I do think if you become a politician you have to expect a certain degree of barracking but hatred of females and sexist remarks are vile. There are many in the HOC who think women are an easy target and it is time they were outed, named and shamed. Yes Maw Bercow sits at the top of that heap.

maryeliza54 Mon 07-Jan-19 22:43:15

But one of you lot might well have done so lemon

The sight of all those grown men yelling "scum" at an elected female MP was distasteful in the extreme. In view of what happened to Jo Cox, it is inexplicable that the police did not do more. Yet again, I am puzzled at the attitude of Brexiteers who are - after all - going to get entirely their way trying to shout down anybody who tries to point out the problems that could arise. The Speaker would have been criticised if he had stayed silent on the matter. I wonder if the real driving force to stop a second knowledge-based referendum is precisely the fear that idiots like those men will cause or spark violence? What a mess.

It makes sobering reading, particularly if we remember the threats to the BBC's Laura Kunesberg for just doing her job over Brexit.

"Many of the incidents have been carried out by the same small group of protesters wearing yellow hi-vis jackets, modelled on the French gilets jaunes movements, who like to livestream their actions on Facebook. They have also blocked Westminster Bridge and harassed other politicians and journalists, including shouting racist and sexist abuse at a Sky News team."

These people were on the winning side, remember.

Is this our future? Caught between violent intimidation and being dragged over a Brexit cliff?

Did anyone see 'the Uncivil War' on tv last night? I think it had it right, something nasty in certain groups has been unleashed and thugs like that feel free to behave as they like.
It was very frightening.
It seems there were a billion people who had never voted targeted by Vote Leave (using the data-mining from Cambridge Analytica) who were swayed by emotional pressure, never mind the facts. Were you one of them, and did you see those ads?

Anniebach Tue 08-Jan-19 08:23:15

I watched it late yesterday evening. Big difference in MP’s being heckled when on the hustings and what happened to Anna Soubrey, she was giving an interview and then returning to work, no MP should be subjected to this. Anyone of those louts could have had a knife. Thicker skin wouldn’t have saved Jo Cox.

Perhaps she can be dismissed as a stupid woman .

BlueBelle Tue 08-Jan-19 08:27:55

This was unacceptable behaviour no matter what ‘side’ you are on
I thought civilisation had moved on a bit from throwing bats or cats or any other objects at politicians this was a mob a very unattractive mob and I can see there being a civil war if things don’t change, unfortunately the far right attract more mob behaviour, are louder, more uncouth and more likely to break the law in their cause
It just shows how civilisation is only on the surface of any society
Very very sad times and a country I m know longer proud of belonging to

BlueBelle Tue 08-Jan-19 08:28:35

No not know sorry

Anniebach Tue 08-Jan-19 08:38:13

It is not only the far right, Luciana Berger had to be escorted to the Labour Party conference last year.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 08-Jan-19 08:59:21

Politics nasty underbelly seems to be more visible now.

Whether you are Female or Male whatever party you represent to be in that situation must be quite frightening. Anyone or any organisation is open to obuse by extremists.

There are people on both sides of the political divide out to cause trouble and make headlines.

I would be very unhappy if free speech / right to protest was taken away from us, but surely this freedom comes with responsibility.

Sparklefizz Tue 08-Jan-19 09:52:48

Caledonail They are not "on the winning side", as you say, but Rent-a-Mob who are anarchists out to cause trouble.

Grannycupcake Tue 08-Jan-19 09:57:35

I was taught when young, 'Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can never hurt you.'
It has worked for me.
In public life and business quite often it results in more support for the 'injured' party.

Grandad1943 Tue 08-Jan-19 09:59:11

I believe the gross insults and highly threatening behaviour against Anna Soubry yesterday demonstrates only too well the type of persons now involved in the leave campaign. UKIP has now been taken over by the far right on the back of a referendum campaign based on lies and financial abuse of the rules.

In all this, we see little condemnation of the abuse hurled against Anna country from the leave campaign leaders on the media, and it would seem that they have no response to the ever-growing crisis they have brought on this country.

Grampie Tue 08-Jan-19 10:06:16

Leftards chanting Nazi. Nothing new here except that the BBC said they were right whingers.

All MPs need such a thick skin these days that its a wonder we have any candidates.

Grandad1943 Tue 08-Jan-19 10:06:16

Apologies should be Soubry above.
