If anybody else turned their Land Rover over at 97, would you expect them to be allowed to keep their licence?

Haven't followed the whole thread but I think it's an embarrassment to the Royal Family. He gets a new car (JLR pr stunt) clearly shouldn't be driving at his age. I'm more than 30yrs younger but accept on my much travelled routes in winter the sun causes an issue so adjust my driving/awareness appropriately.

Maw you know he hasn’t spoken to the people in the other car?
On tonight’s News at 10 they said the older of the women has given an interview to a Sunday paper (which?) and said the Duke/palace has not had any contact with them Anniebach

maryeliza54 Sun 20-Jan-19 05:27:53

When I saw that stupid phrase ‘an exchange of well-wishes’ I knew then that he hadn’t spoken to them directly. Apparently a message was passed on by police liaison. The RF really are a crock of shit

It must be hard to give up such a large piece of his independence.

My father nearly killed my mother and I,when he was over 90. He pulled out of a turning having misjudged the speed of an oncoming car. He reluctantly listened to reason and gave up.

It does seem time for PPh to do the same, with grace. He can kill himself but not others.

Anniebach Sun 20-Jan-19 08:48:26

Thanks Maw. I can understand him not having direct contact , if he had every word would have been in the story sold to the press.

Good grief, I have just read her story in the Sunday Express, she has a broken wrist so her son has to help wash and dress her , she is considering a private prosecution. Seems now her car was hit by his .

Anniebach Sun 20-Jan-19 08:55:04

Here is her story

Has HRH at least offered them a new Kia? It's about time IMHO..
I think there should be a day when ONLY people over 90 are allowed to drive. Then there would be no accidents.
I'm speaking from the heart as I have an elderly relative who has very reluctantly stopped driving. He failed the sight test. I'm sure he'd love to take the car out one last time.

Thanks for that link Annie. I prefer to have a slimmed-down RF than a president, but I've never liked PP's abrasive and thoughtless attitude towards people which he has shown all his life on Royal walkabouts, and I think his latest behaviour is a disgrace.

Like the time when Diana died and the RF's initial behaviour over that, this will be another nail in their coffin if they are not careful.

Sparklefizz Sun 20-Jan-19 09:29:50

As the lady with the broken wrist says of PP wanting to keep on driving, "What about my independence?" She has lost hers for a couple of months now.

maryeliza54 Sun 20-Jan-19 09:52:50

Is there no one within the RF and their overblown overstaffed entourage who can see the case for help (practical, emotional, financial)being made available as necessary to both these women? It’s not as though the RF have to worry as to whether their insurance company will cover any of this. These women through no fault of their own have been thrown into the public eye and cannot retreat behind their gated and walled estate with their dozens of staff to carry out their every whim. They need support now not months down the courts/insurance claims process.

Anniebach Sun 20-Jan-19 09:55:39

Sparkle I really have never been able to understand the criticism of the royal family when Diana died, were you one of those who supported the call of the press ‘ your country needs you’ ? Did you need them?

What right do we have to demand how others react to a death ?

Anniebach Sun 20-Jan-19 09:58:03

Thrown into the public eye ? Story to the press and posing for photographs was forced on the woman ?

GrannyGravy13 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:11:31

No surprise the women has given her story to a tabloid. No wonder the RF has not contacted her it would be “splashed” all over the front page!!!

maryeliza54 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:13:59

Yes anniebach the press would have hunted her down anyway and if the RF had behaved properly maybe she wouldn’t have felt the need to do this. She’s probably trying to shame them into action and so she damn well should. What was she supposed to do - play the role of feudal serf and wait for a crumb from the rich man’s table? You may not be aware that she probably hadn’t got press secretaries, a press office, a lady in waiting, a page, a chauffeur, a maid, a dresser , a housekeeper and do on ad nauseum to cater fir her every need. These women were forced into the public eye the minute the self entitled git aka PP drove out onto the A road from a B road when he shouldn’t have done and when the RF failed to behave appropriately afterwards?

maryeliza54 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:14:37

GG chicken and egg ? Muchly

maryeliza54 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:18:11

And if they had don the the decent human thing and contacted her what would have been wrong with that being splashed all over the front page? A photo of the bunch of flowers, a photo of a handwritten note hoping she is well -bloody hell we have enough about the wonderful charity things the RF do splashed all over the front pages when we are told what they said to a sick child on a hospital visit etc.

maryeliza54 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:26:09

As for talking to the press, how does the PP fan club feel about the barrister who pulled him out and his innumerable interviews? One quote today ‘ I had PP’s blood on my hands’. Should no one involved have spoken to the press - maybe whenever there’s a brush between a member of the RF and the law, the Official Secrets Act should be brought into play. FGS

Annie in response to your comment above, obviously we have no right at all to demand how others react to a death, but I ... and many others... felt they didn't show any respect. That's just my personal opinion and I am expecting you to disagree.

And those boys should not have been made to walk in procession behind her coffin. As Prince Harry said last year "No 12 year old should ever have been made to do that!"

Anniebach Sun 20-Jan-19 10:28:56

maryeliza play the role of feudal serf , wait for a crumb from the rich man’s table ? These were her only choices ? May be yours but certaintly not mine.

I would choose behaving with dignity, remaining silent and leaving it to my insurance company. But I am not concerned with the wealth of others, and certaintly wouldn’t pose for photographs or talk to the Sunday Express

maryeliza54 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:33:46

Well bully for you anniebach. Do tell me how criticising her so harshly and promoting your own dignified behaviour squares with your non judgemental Christianity?

Anniebach Sun 20-Jan-19 10:33:47

Sparkle sorry but you are saying how others should grieve. Didn’t show any respect ? What would have wanted them to do ? They remained silent in their own home , did you want them to give interviews to the press , cry in public?

Sparklefizz Sun 20-Jan-19 10:34:45

Anniebach I can understand her emotions though. All the attention has gone on Philip and she wants people to realise how shocking it was for her, her friend and the baby. She feels it's unfair. I can put myself in her place.

If you haven't been in her situation, maybe you can't.

The driver who hit our car just carried on with his life, albeit having lost his No Claims Bonus, whereas I had to wear a surgical collar for a year, even on holiday on the beach, and have had 30 years of pain.

Sparklefizz Sun 20-Jan-19 10:36:06

Oh Annie don't start yet another squabble with me over the RF. I am entitled to my opinion without you nitpicking over it, you are entitled to yours.

Lily65 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:40:44

Sparkle, that sounds awful.

None of know the Royals do we? We might like to think we do.

The press would be on to the people involved in the crash and no doubt made a very good financial offer. Lots of people need money.

Nonnie Sun 20-Jan-19 10:41:31

I really can't read the last 15 or so hours of this so have only read the last page. Hope I'm not repeating what anyone else has said.

The RF do not give out details of everything they do, just basic information. Not when Diana died or when there is a royal birth.

I do not believe JLR got a security proofed Freelander to Sandringham as a PR exercise in such a short time. Yesterday on GN people knew it had come from Balmoral.

I have been waiting to hear which tabloid paid for the story, on the BBC website it said it was the Mirror. Anyone who has ever been reported by such a paper will imagine the scenario: First a bidding war to see who will pay the most. Then the interview in which questions such as 'has the prince written to you personally and apologised?' Answer 'no' which is then turned into a huge complaint that 'he hasn't even be in touch to say sorry'. This is when we have been told that they have sent their good wishes.

Would any of us admit to fault at the time of the accident? Insurance companies tell us to never do so. I heard the interviews of both the people who claimed to have pulled him from the car and they both said he was more concerned about the people in the other car.

I don't condemn the Kia driver for talking (probably being paid) to the media, I don't know her circumstances or how she feels. I don't condemn PP for what he has done either, I wasn't in the car and I have no idea what recompense he has offered.

I don't think we should judge if we don't know. None of us can be sure we won't ever been responsible for a car accident. Yes, it was an accident.
