The cliff edges nearer because May doesn’t want to split party!

Theresa May has effectively ruled out Labour’s proposal for a Brexit compromise, stressing her objection to staying inside a customs union. “I am not clear why you believe it would be preferable to seek a say in future EU trade deals rather than the ability to strike our own deals?” she wrote to Jeremy Corbyn. The PM argued that her own Brexit plan “explicitly provides for the benefits of a customs union” in terms of avoiding tariffs, while allowing “development of the UK’s independent trade policy beyond our economic partnership with the EU”.

She accepted a customs union could potentially have delivered her a Commons majority but at the serious risk of splitting her party.

The letter comes amid a growing presumption that while May remains officially committed to putting a revised Brexit plan to MPs as soon as possible, in practice this is unlikely to happen before the end of February. Business leaders have called for quicker action, with the head of the CBI, Carolyn Fairbairn, saying the UK is “in the emergency zone of Brexit now” and the confusion will not just affect jobs and investment, but harm the UK as a long-term business destination.

WOW Varian, thank you. I have to admit I had no idea.
Surely this should be challenged at highest level.

The audience producer for the BBC news debate show Question Time has been “reminded” by the BBC of the corporation’s guidelines regarding social media use, after she shared Facebook posts by the far-right group Britain First.

Alison Fuller-Pedley, who works as an audience producer for the popular news panel program, which sees guests debate the issues of the day with audience participation, shared five of the far-right group’s Facebook posts exhorting support for the British armed forces and the wearing of the commemorative poppy. She also ‘liked’ a page called “British Patriotic Front”. Both Facebook pages carry extreme racist and ultra-British nationalist content.

Fuller-Pedley’s job gives her responsibility over organising the participating audience for the programme.

Speaking to CommonSpace, a BBC spokesperson said: “The Question Time audience is always chosen by a team to ensure broad political balance and each application goes through the same rigorous background checks. Any suggestion to the contrary is misleading.

“The BBC has clear impartiality guidelines covering the use of personal social media - this freelance producer and the rest of the programme team have been reminded of their responsibilities.”

Fuller-Pedley works for Mentorn Media, which is commissioned by the BBC to create the Question Time programme.

Aparently she has done this job for twenty years and is a former member of UKIP, which possibly explains why Nigel Farage was invited on to QT 29 times in the years leading up to the 2016 referendum, and no other MEP was ever invited, except for the ultra-right wing Conservative brexiter MEP Daniel Hannan who was invited once.

No MEP from any other party ever got the opportunity to appear on QT for all these years.

Although this woman was not directly employed by the BBC, the importance of QT as a BBC "flagship" programme has led, naturally to it being known as the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation.

Can you explain a bit more about this Fuller Pedley person and her rôle at the BBC- please.

varian Fri 08-Mar-19 19:24:58

Margaret Becket was the only member of the panel on this week's QT who spoke any sense and she was booed by the audience specially selected by ex-UKIP member Alison Fuller Pedley.

It has now got to the point that any panelist who tells the truth about brexit will be booed by her specially selected audience. You could almost use that as an indicator of a sensible truthful panelist. Well done Margaret Becket.

Huge respect for Dame Margaret, saying it as it is:

I have just read in Guardian that MPs say that Brexit has coursened public debate to the point where they regularly receive death threats and other forms of intimidation via social media and elsewhere. Nicky Morgan told the Commons on Monday that she feared MPs were on the receiving end of "systematic intimidation" to force them to change votes on Brexit. I think this is more like anarchy than democracy.

Lazigirl Wed 06-Mar-19 09:55:27

I'm sure quite a few MPs are feeling uneasy in their tenure at the moment because feelings are running so high on all sides. Thing is, once the population has taste of power (ie referendum) they are not going relinquish it easily. This is the reality of our so called democracy now.

Good grief, varian!

Our far-right Tory MP, who was listed as member of the ERG is apparently now being targeted with deselection because he voted for Theresa May's deal!!

May 'did not understand EU when she triggered Brexit'

I don't believe there will lemon as common sense will prevail in the end, but feel for some who are very anxious about the outcome. I have friends who are Welsh farmers.

lemongrove Sat 02-Mar-19 20:36:08

There won’t be a hard Brexit, so nobody need worry about ‘cliff edges’ shortages hysteria, livelihoods or anything else.

Lazigirl Sat 02-Mar-19 20:32:47

I don't think you'd be grinning if you were a sheep farmer ac many of whom will go out of business if there is a hard Brexit. But as long as you're happy..........
