£43 million of your tax wasted!

So the Garden Bridge vanity project has used £43million of public funds. Nothing to show for it at all.. thank goodness as I expect it would have cost more and more and for no real benefit! Austerity? Really?

Think what the NHS / Education/ Family Services etc could have done with that money and actually made a difference to people's lives.

Oh so so much ..way beyond my ability to really appreciate the waste of trying to leave, which might have been much reduced if an agreed course had been in place before Article 50!! It makes me angry and frustrated when I see the state of schools that I am in regularly and know that even a few thousand in the budget would make a huge impact!

Nonnie Fri 15-Feb-19 16:00:18

Glad to hear it PECS understandable with all the confusion. I assume you agree that a great deal has already been spent?

PECS Fri 15-Feb-19 15:56:08

Nonnie I got confused with this thread and another where I posted about friends (CS) who are busy prepping the contingency plans.

Jalima1108 Fri 15-Feb-19 15:51:37

my post was in reply to the OP not subsequent off-piste posts

Nonnie Fri 15-Feb-19 15:48:17

PECS this was last October before they needed to employ even more to deal with the no deal: www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-latest-staff-numbers-new-hmrc-jobs-employ-david-davis-a8030281.html

Presumably it is far in excess of 10,000 now plus all the contractors and consultants. Really surprised you didn't know.

PECS Fri 15-Feb-19 15:44:48

Maizie D are there extra civil servants? The people I know are simply having additional roles (Brexit strategy planning) added to their existing jobs!

Jalima1108 Fri 15-Feb-19 15:41:40

[sigh]

so many cutbacks
so much waste
Jobs for the boys (and probably girls too)
Jollies with public money

Things never change for the better.

MaizieD Fri 15-Feb-19 12:29:54

Well, that money has to get into the economy at some time, Nonnie. All the extra civil servants will no doubt be spending their pay; the same for the workers in the firms that are converting our southern motorways into lorry parks...

It's only a temporary upside, though...

Nonnie Fri 15-Feb-19 11:40:41

Maizie some hopes! I can see no upside to any of this and wish some of the leavers would tell us what they think it is. I'm still waiting for someone to change my mind with constructive reasons why they want to leave.

MaizieD Fri 15-Feb-19 11:25:35

Actually I believe that, net, the figure was even lower.

Indeed it was, MOnica and the National Statistics Office even wrote to B Johnson to tell him that his bus was telling porkies. Ignored, of course...

The figure I have seen for current costs of Brexit is £800 million per week.. Let's just hope that it delivers a healthy return to the Treasury by way of taxes on income and consumer spending grin And keeps a few businesses afloat for a bit longer...

varian Fri 15-Feb-19 11:08:36

£500 million per week loss is the figure for the damage done to our economy so far just by the vote to leave. It has nothing to do with our £350m per week gross contribution.

If the brexit nonsense is not stooped the damage well be far greater.

M0nica Fri 15-Feb-19 08:29:47

Actually I believe that, net, the figure was even lower.

M0nica Fri 15-Feb-19 08:29:21

I thought the Brexiteers said it was £350 million and it would all be paid to the NHS.

Labaik Fri 15-Feb-19 00:48:47

Not to mention the money the DUP have been paid to prop up this lame government....

PECS Thu 14-Feb-19 22:52:30

All the contingency planning will be costing money!

varian Thu 14-Feb-19 22:11:32

Studies have shown that we have been £500m per week worse off than we would have been if Remain had won. What an utter waste!!!!

Jane10 Thu 14-Feb-19 21:13:12

Maryeliza54 I gather there was a move spearheaded by Scottish tory MPs to reduce the likelihood of BJ's becoming prime minister. It was called 'Operation Arse'!

M0nica Thu 14-Feb-19 20:11:59

Why wasted? Many areas of the UK have benfited and will continue to benefit from EU funds.

varian Thu 14-Feb-19 19:43:26

Of course it is dreadful to waste £43m of taxpayers money - par for the course when Boris Johnson was involved, but it is still less than the £500m we have wasted every week since the EU referendum!

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Feb-19 18:41:57

Then there was the cable car whatsit

PECS Thu 14-Feb-19 18:40:39

Oh the list goes on! I had almost forgotten about the canons!

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Feb-19 18:39:15

And it was only £300k spent on the water canons

PECS Thu 14-Feb-19 18:35:45

Well I suppose it is only £43million. hmm

maryeliza54 Thu 14-Feb-19 18:33:20

Well BJ has always had plenty of fans on GN so I guess he’ll be forgiven
