A small number of back benchers will announce they are leaving the party this morning.

Chuka Umunna is one who may be among them.

trisher Mon 18-Feb-19 14:07:31

Undoubtedly Annie but his book "Chavs: the demonisation of the working class" is brilliant.

Owen Jones ? Wonder if the fact his parents were members of the ‘Trotskyist Militants ‘ influenced his political beliefs

dragonfly46 Mon 18-Feb-19 13:43:15

With a bit of luck out of this shambles they may decide to abandon Brexit - one can but hope!!

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 13:36:53

In the 1987 election the SDP increased their seats

trisher Mon 18-Feb-19 13:35:03

This was a carefuly planned coup. The website (which has crashed) is owned by a company set up by Gavin Shuker in January beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/11770529/filing-history
Thanks to Guidofawkes for the info.
Owen Jones thinks the website looks like an insurance company. Possibly when they manage to fix it we can see for ourselves

Day6 Mon 18-Feb-19 13:31:03

I agree Rowantree that the seven breakaway Labour MPs should resign their seats.

lemongrove Mon 18-Feb-19 13:30:17

Well said Day6 that is exactly the case.

lemongrove Mon 18-Feb-19 13:29:34

This isn’t a new party (yet) but could well be, in time.
I hope their constituences continue to support them as Independents. So many ordinary working people cannot stomache the thought of Corbyn as PM.

Day6 Mon 18-Feb-19 13:26:45

Labour is in disarray and weakened. The Conservatives in exactly the same boat too.

Too many fingers in Westminster trying to serve the Brexit pie their way, and the personally held beliefs of MPs rather than toeing the party line means we cannot vote for any party and know they will represent us or speak for us.

What a carve up!! confused

Rowantree Mon 18-Feb-19 13:24:03

The Seven should resign their seats and allow bi-elections so their constituents can decide whether to continue support for them or select someone else to represent them.

This has happened before in 1981. Whatever happened to the Gang of Four?

Day6 Mon 18-Feb-19 13:21:00

*The seven are standing as ‘a new group’, i am tempted ,
Chuka said they have a website for anyone wishing to sign up*

You'd have to be a remainer and support a second referendum. This group is as much about about their personal stand regarding Brexit as it is an anti Labour one, sadly.

The Labour Party was split when Corbyn became leader. This is an "I want to do Brexit my way!" protest (ie: we will Remain) as much as anything else.

Rowantree Mon 18-Feb-19 13:19:16

Bliar's Labour Party didn't represent my ideologies. I felt betrayed then.

I re-joined when Corbyn became leader.
For anti-semitism read anti-zionism.

Brexit - yes, shocking. But change from within. This will be a gift to the Tories.

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 13:18:28

Good grief, John MacDonald talking about ‘doing the honourable thing’ ,

MacDonald and honourable ?

jura2 Mon 18-Feb-19 13:16:52

That 'Democracy' call does not fly I am afraid- as said 100 times before- a very close call- without any preparation and information, and with massive lies, fraud, dirty money, foreign interference - which the Government is trying to prevent from being properly investigated- can never ever be called 'democracy'.

jura2 Mon 18-Feb-19 13:14:58

It didn't mix so far in UK - it does in many other countries with different kind of political systems. The centre right of the Tory party, and the centre left of labour- has a lot more in common than the extremes of each. ERJ has more in common with the UDP and Ukip...

And for voting- for now- revoking art 50 or getting a peoples' vote- is more important than anything else. They'd be voting tactically of course. I believe they all want a decent education system, to save the NHS from privatisation, to deal with the environment and pollution, effective international research and innovation, etc, etc, etc.

The old 2 party system is broken and not fit for the challenges of the 21st century - onwards and forwards to the future- strong in the EU and ready for reform, at the top table.

Day6 Mon 18-Feb-19 13:14:49

Sadly, it is a group of Remainers.

Whilst they might be anti Corbyn, they ARE pro EU and tended to side with Brussels in negotiations regarding Brexit.

I see them as anti democracy I'm afraid. They want a second referendum. I shan't be supporting them.

I'd rather support Corbyn regarding Brexit - if he'd grow a pair (fat chance) and remain true to his long held Eurosceptic beliefs and fight for the UK getting out of the EU. His constand fence sitting tactics make him a very weak leader.

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 12:44:22

Jura fire and water don’t mix. There has been MP’s crossing the floor but a party of conservatives and labour MP’s couldn’t work , would the voter be voting Tory or labour ? Could an agreement on policies be reached by both after brexit ?

humptydumpty Mon 18-Feb-19 12:40:28

I think I must have missed something here: how come MPs are supposed to represent their constituents' referendum views even if they think they are wrong, but they can leave their party without reference back to their constituents? double standards surely?

trisher Mon 18-Feb-19 12:35:04

jura2 the problem being who will fund this party?

jura2 Mon 18-Feb-19 12:28:43

'Labour and conservatives couldn’t form a new party.'

why not? I pray the remainers on the Tory side will leave too- and join them- and ally with the Lib Dems, the Greens and 'even' the SNP.

Time to break up the damaging and destructive 2 party system and extreme see saw politics- and find common sense and cooperation in the middle. Hurrah- and perhaps hope at last.

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 12:11:58

I am amused the cry is ‘ five left in 1981 and kept Thatcher in power’. Not true. The disastrous 1983 election brought Thatcher in.

The seven who have left the party have little chance of being re elected, Momentum will see to that

trisher Mon 18-Feb-19 12:10:51

muffinthemoo I know what happened but it's his reaction I question. Think of the intrusions Corbyn has gone through, personal life, bins all raked through. Things could get much worse for. Chuka,

Anniebach Mon 18-Feb-19 12:06:16

It isn’t a new party, 7 MP’s would couldn’t support a racist, bullying , far left leader decided to leave, as did Frank Field.

trisher Mon 18-Feb-19 11:59:18

Ah. thanks for the link POGS so it's not a political party. It's a group of Independent MPs. I think one or two MPs dropping out of their party and not standing down is bad enough but 7 is not acceptable. If they believe as they say that the majoriy of their constituents will support them they should go back to their constituency and test that with a by-election. Their personal stories are irrelevant. They seem capable of making general accusations that they do not detail but which no doubt are attractive to a right wing press. Anti-semitism is rife in the party- really? Then why not name names?
It's happened before and the participants for the most part sank without trace. SDP anyone?

muffinthemoo Mon 18-Feb-19 11:53:30

trisher His girlfriend was doxed. An article on Conservative Woman threw incredible shade on them for not at the point being married and heavily implied that Chuka was either gay, unable to commit to women because of his ethnic background, or both.

(It's not a dogwhistle if everyone can hear it.)

I can understand his withdrawal in the face of that sort of BS. Subsequently he and Alice married and have a small daughter.
