MOMO Warning

There is a thread on MN under aibu.
(Sorry cant do links)
And also a police warning about something called MOMO
The issue is with children's You tube
Including Peppa pig and ads such as kinder eggs.
A scarey face flashes on with suicide messages telling children to get a knife. There are other messages equally as frightening.
Even if child is watching with an adult it flashes on without warning.
Apparently some schools have also reported problem RE MOMO.

Well I had a long chat after school with DGC ( 6, 10, 10 &13) The big ones knew all about it. School had told them to treat it as any other unwanted communication.: i.e leave the screen immediately, without clicking on anything and inform an adult. Eldest had seen the images but being the kind of kid she is had researched the Japanese statue & legend on which the face was based. confused & told me of her nightmare where everyone at school looked like Momo except her!
Older DGS shrugged and was confused as to why any one would want to do it.." they'll be arrested for hacking! " And younger DGD was quieter but did comment that it was probably a sad loner with nothing interesting to do!
6 yr old was all about getting revenge with his imaginary robots! His brother told him not to
be silly..just leave it and tell mum!

What sick minds these people have I hope the police catch them before something bad happens.

Cherrytree59 Thu 28-Feb-19 21:20:37

How can it be a hoax if a GNer such as Susan56 viewed Peppa pig covered in blood on a dentist chair.

The point is that does not matter how small the % of very young children the UK to have actully had the misfortune view and becoming distressed by the MOMO is,
it is still a fact that Parents, grandparents and teachers need to be vigilant.

lemongrove Thu 28-Feb-19 20:54:53

It’s a HOAX!

Which just shows how easy it is to cause panic.

Saetana Thu 28-Feb-19 20:51:32

Its a hoax - virtually no children in the UK have seen this - however the viral panic idiocy is ensuring that lots more will see this out of curiousity! facepalm - believe only 10% of what you see on the internet - and question that 10% closely!

Ellie Anne Thu 28-Feb-19 18:20:08

My ganhildren have been talking about it at school. It’s been taking very seriously. My 8year old says they have stopped doing a project on the vikings and are learning about internet safety instead.
The 5 year old loves you tube but is not allowed to watch it now.

Bossyrossy Thu 28-Feb-19 18:12:34

This has just been discussed on Radio 4. It’ a hoax that has been spread, understandably, by concerned parents.

BlueBelle Thu 28-Feb-19 17:28:25

Cherrytree I m just posting what the BBCnews has written if you read the link I sent it’s not me saying it’s fake is the latest news that all

MaizieD Thu 28-Feb-19 16:57:38

Absolutely no need to apologise, PECS. The link probably needs to be repeated about every third message... hmm

fiorentina51 Thu 28-Feb-19 16:05:30

Hoax or not, anything that makes us more vigilant regarding a child's access and use of the Internet, is no bad thing in my view.

MegrannyW1 Thu 28-Feb-19 14:46:24

My 10 year old granddaughter told me about this, when I asked her how she knew she said they had been told at school that day by her teacher.

Cherrytree59 Thu 28-Feb-19 14:06:15

BlueBell how can it be Fake News if GNers themselves have seen MOMO?

Or that the schools are also having issues re MOMO and have warned parents.

Or that the grandchildren of some GNers on here are coming home from school frightened and distressed?

PECS Thu 28-Feb-19 14:03:37

Sorry Maizie I did not glean from the last threads before I posted that people knew! Though there seem to be a few mixed messages out there!
Apparently my 13yr old DGD had a nightmare last night re Momo! Not sure where/how she saw any images. Will ask her later after school.

Only heard about this today. My daughter in Australia wa told by her 3 year old that a boy lost his leg because of a bomb but she couldn’t remember where she saw it. They have wiped her iPad and no YouTube or internet just a kids app and 5 games. Have to be one step ahead of these sickos. Although it’s technology that allows stuff like this it also allows people to be warned about it. Glad I didn’t have these problems when my kids were growing up

According to what I last read this has all been a hoax or as Donald Duck would say ‘fake news’

MaizieD Thu 28-Feb-19 12:58:48

I posted that link earlier this morning, PECS. I can only assume that no one has bothered to read itconfused

It's not as bad as is being made out, folks.

This is the way that panics happen (shakes head in despair)

Qwerty Thu 28-Feb-19 12:39:04

My DGD mentioned MOMO to me yesterday. It had cropped up at school on an IPad or computer. It is very scary. Apparently the police warned further education colleges about it months ago in our area. The problem was thought to be decreasing...

Gonegirl Thu 28-Feb-19 12:14:13

I guess that is why we shouldn't really be giving it publicity. Mates are going to pass it on and frighten each other.

Grandson informs me it is mostly on snapchat. I think he may be confusing it with WhatsApp. He hasn't got either thank goodness.

RosieJ Thu 28-Feb-19 11:59:24

jackypat sadly Momo is definitely NOT a hoax. I've been shown a video by my daughter of this creature. In it she/it is saying in a singsong voice "Momo's gonna kill you" "When you sleep she'll come to you and by the morning you'll be dead!" It is sickening to see and hear.
My two GC of 7yrs and 9yrs are really upset and frightened to sleep after school mates told them all about Momo.
Their Dad is in IT and thankfully has their ipads etc tightly locked down but sadly the chances of seeing or being shown this vile thing cannot be totally controlled.
angry

As jackypat says!

BRedhead59 Thu 28-Feb-19 11:45:11

My son has his sons mobile phone totally locked down and under control but what about his mates????

jackypat Thu 28-Feb-19 11:37:24

Apparently MOMO is a hoax. But has brought to attention that parents should be supervising children at all times using tablets and computers. The Peppa Pig atrocity is true though. Better to watch and download episodes you have viewed rather than let children scroll though YouTube

lmm6 Thu 28-Feb-19 11:21:31

I only heard about this yesterday. I cannot express my horror at what is happening today. I HATE all this technology and wish it had never been invented. I am constantly trying to see what my 12-year-old GS is looking at but sometimes he turns the phone round to hide it from me. We are quite close but he is obviously looking at stuff he knows I wouldn't approve of. This makes me sick to my stomach and I don't know what to do. Where's it all going to end?

Squiffy Thu 28-Feb-19 10:55:15

Why? Just why? What are such sick people hoping to achieve? Sometimes I just can't believe what is going on - and, frankly, don't want to.

I've alerted my DD and DiL, but I expect they're ahead of me there!
