Varian ..... it ain’t going to happen!

Pythagorus Thu 28-Mar-19 06:45:57

Parliament do what’s right!? They don’t know what they want. This current Brexit problem seems to be too complex for any of them to agree on.

Urmstongran Thu 28-Mar-19 07:36:53

I agree Pythagorus
If MP’s hadn’t spent so much time and effort trying to change the result of the referendum we’d be Out tomorrow.

Doncha just sigh when any of them parrot ‘yes we respect the result of the referendum....’ and then there is always a BUT...

varian Thu 28-Mar-19 10:36:52

A record 268 MPs voted with the Liberal Democrats for a people's vote. This was the most popular vote of the night and got more votes than the Prime Minister’s deal has ever got. While no proposal commanded a majority, the largest support is for a People’s Vote.

MaizieD Thu 28-Mar-19 11:06:51

If MP’s hadn’t spent so much time and effort trying to change the result of the referendum we’d be Out tomorrow.

They were at perfect liberty to do so. When they voted in favour of the referendum they had been assured it was advisory. They didn't vote to 'respect the result' by treating it as mandatory. That was the idiot Cameron's post vote 'promise'; one which he had no constitutional right to make. Only Parliament could have made that as a binding promise, but they didn't.

Urmstongran Thu 28-Mar-19 11:56:53

A second referendum ain’t gonna happen under TM. Not only is she totally against it, she & her Cabinet are not interested in the results of the indicative votes.

varian Thu 28-Mar-19 14:48:54

A snap election was never going to happen under TM - but it did.

Pythagorus Thu 28-Mar-19 23:00:40

Varian - There was indeed a lot of support for a people’s vote to agree what Parliament decide before ratification. So once Parliament have finally agreed ..... we put it to the people to make sure they agree! ???????

Nonnie Fri 29-Mar-19 15:53:15

Imo the reason we won't get a vote on the offer is that MPs are frightened of losing their jobs. If they declare for one side or the other they may well lose votes. I doubt there are enough of them with a conscience to field a football team.

trisher Fri 29-Mar-19 19:32:04

Can anyone explain to me why the march of a few thousand Brexiteers is all over the news but the 2 million People's March was largely ignored?
Horrible links to far right there as well-Tommy Robinson!!!

Smileless2012 Fri 29-Mar-19 19:35:22

The march by remainers had just as much coverage as the leavers vote trisha.

trisher Fri 29-Mar-19 19:48:41

No it didn't. Just watching Chanel 4 news. Interviews with people on the march. Continous footage of Parliament square being shown.Interview with Farage. Almost 30 mins of coverage not to mention live coverage this afternoon. OK it's linked to the vote but it's excessive. The big joke is of course that there are so few people there they have to keep showing the same shots.
Do Leavers really think having Tommy Robinson on your side is a good thing?

MawBroon Fri 29-Mar-19 19:51:48

Today on Twitter
ThatTimWalker
I stand to be corrected, but, as I understand it, the BBC organised a helicopter to cover the raid on Cliff Richard's flat, today's modest pro-Brexit protest, but no helicopter for Saturday's Remain march. Just so we all know what our licence fee is being spent on
3 hours ago

The same coverage- really?

Smileless2012 Fri 29-Mar-19 19:53:29

As leaver no, I don't consider Tommy Robinson being a supporter of Brexit a good thing, why, what's your point?

There was ample coverage of the pro EU march trisher and I saw plenty of "the same shots" when coverage of the pro EU march was being shown.

Brexit march: five arrests as Leave supporters clash with police in Westminster on day UK was scheduled to exit the EU

www.standard.co.uk/news/london/brexit-supporters-clash-with-police-at-march-with-five-arrested-on-day-brexit-supporters-clash-with-a4104911.html

No arrests last Saturday, in spite of much greater numbers marching for a Final Say.

trisher Sat 30-Mar-19 10:05:01

Smileless2012 because Tommy Robinson and the EDL were very visible and he spoke at the Leavers march. So there is obviously some link between the organisers and them. I believe Farage abandoned UKIP because of TR. It gives credit to the accusations of racism and xenophobia that have been made about the Leave campaign.

jura2 Sat 30-Mar-19 10:25:08

the scenes in London yesterday were watched by the whole world- black shirts with nazi salutes, placards and tatoos- the violent and disgusting shouting at Politicians and Police - and it clouded the whole of Great Britain in total shame.

As Will Self said so rightly- many Leave voters voted with their head and heart firmly attached - but they are dragged in by the rest (and not sure of proportions) - violent, despicable black shirt fascists and racists. Not all who voted Leave are either- but none of the above voted remain- that is an undenialble, unrefutable, fact.

crystaltipps Sat 30-Mar-19 10:30:27

I don’t think the coverage of the few hundred Leavers rally did them any favours- fat football types tattooed thugs and Stephen Y-L ( let’s use his criminal name) plus Farage spouting their usual hate message.

Nonnie Sat 30-Mar-19 10:59:15

I don't think the coverage will change anyone's mind, everyone seems to be so set in their views now.

We know their was criminality by Leave, we know TM is a puppet for the right wing, some of us even think we know what the outcome of Brexit will be but it seems people are not at all open minded on either side. I would love a Leaver to convince me of their argument, I really want to know but can't get a logical argument from them. Is it possible it is simply that the EU has the buying power of Sainsburys and the UK the buying power of my corner shop?

Fantastic compiliation of the Final Say march. If you are at all unsure about brexit (and I think a lot of people are), just listen and learn.

You don't have to be young, or left-of-centre to appreciate the value of staying in the EU. If you have 13 minutes to spare please listen to this uplifting and inspiring speech from Michael Heseltine.

trisher Mon 01-Apr-19 11:18:49

Love that speech! Did you notice in the film of the march all of the people interviewed were reasonable and good tempered? a bit different to the Leavers on TV who appeared full of hatred and bile.

varian Tue 02-Apr-19 14:25:36

James Moore, writing in The Independent, makes the same point trisher

Compare the peaceful march for a Final Say with nasty threats of violence from the Brexit far right.

Quite a contrast isn’t it. But that’s roughly how it’s been ever since David Cameron stuck a knife into the heart of Britain in the hopes of settling a debate in the Conservative Party

Jeremy Corbyn is under increasing pressure from senior Labour MPs to demand a second referendum as the price for any deal with Theresa May.

The Prime Minister also faces calls from retired civil service chiefs and Tory-supporting business leaders to put any agreement on extending Article 50 to a public vote.
