Scottish Independence

In 2014, a national referendum was held in Scotland. Voters were asked: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

45% of voters answered yes and 55% answered no, with a turnout of 85%.

I am genuinely interested in the views now. How popular would independence be? After Brexit, is even the idea of a referendum flawed?

Wee Nicola worries about the lack of seasonal workers from the EU. She would have more worries over the drain of Scottish talent should her independence dream ever come true.
I love my grandchildren dearly and would miss them terribly but for their futures I’d encourage them to leave

Very interesting point Floradora

Floradora9 Sun 17-Mar-19 21:48:57

I have to say that as a Scot I am terrified at the thought of independance . What figures I have seen we would all be worse off for many years to come . If it came about and we asked to join the EU we would have to agree to using the euro so much for the Scottish currency the SNP would like .

lemongrove Sun 17-Mar-19 21:34:40

I sometimes think that Sturgeon would be horrified if voters actually wanted independence. It must be nice to have money coming in, and always have Westminster to blame for whatever goes wrong.
A lot of SNP voters have been watching too much Highlander.

Chucky
grin

I only know ex-pat Scots living in England and Wales and they all seem to loathe her with a passion.

Chucky Sun 17-Mar-19 16:36:30

Damn predictive text confused
Holyrood not Hollywood!
Mind you she’s such a good actor perhaps she should be in Hollywood! hmm

Chucky Sun 17-Mar-19 16:31:54

jura2.
“As Nicola says today - a handful of DUP are ruling the waves- whilst Scotland is being totally ignored”

Well Nicola should know all about a handful of mps ruling the waves! After all aren’t the handful of “Green MPs” bolstering up her minority government in Hollywood??

“The Scottish government's budget has passed a key Holyrood vote after the SNP struck a deal with the Greens”.

Suppose it’s alright when it’s needed for her to push things through??

A lot of repetition in your comment.

SueDonim Sun 17-Mar-19 15:25:21

Jalima the Scottish Govt has vowed to phase out petrol & diesel vehicles by 2032 so why would they keep pumping oil?

We live rurally, though, and have oil Central heating so I hope that's not banned as well!

Jalima1108 Sun 17-Mar-19 15:18:06

Given the move away from fossil fuels and towards renewables, Paddyann why do you think extracting even more oil from the N Sea is a good thing?
I was going to mention that too SueDonim but you have put it so much better.
We're not producing much coal now and its use is frowned on - how long before we are all driving electric cars?
Or scientists invent a new, pure non-polluting type of fuel?

SueDonim Sun 17-Mar-19 15:09:16

As for the use of screeds of capital letters on the internet, it's well understood by most people that it's impolite because it represents shouting. It's like someone insisting on using an outdated term that is no longer acceptable in polite society because it's what they've always said. Even my 91yo mother understands that.

Jane10 Sun 17-Mar-19 14:33:43

Exactly so Jalima!

Jalima1108 Sun 17-Mar-19 14:05:55

As Nicola says today - a handful of DUP are ruling the waves- whilst Scotland is being totally ignored
That argument is a non-sequitur - Scotland has 59 MPs who sit in Westminster - they are representing the people of Scotland in the H of P.
If Sturgeon is not happy with their representation, why did she not stand as an MP?
She is given proportionately more airtime than the leader of the Welsh Assembly - how many can name him (or her)? and more airtime than eg the London Mayor who is in charge of an area with a higher population than the whole of Scotland.

We've seen her helicopter, we know she earns more than the PM and there is one other thing about Sturgeon - the whole of the UK hears her loud and clear.

I am really not bothered, however any country that wants independence should take on financial independence, that is pensions, unemployment etc etc. As a lot of Scotland is very daresay populated I. Would be interested to see how the would do this, cannot understand why they would want to, far better to all to get along, but if that's what they want so be it, paying their own way and debts and manage their finance, plus keep out of Westminster.

Jalima1108 Sun 17-Mar-19 13:00:24

.I'm not SHOUTING ..and quite frankly why adult women think capital letters are offensive is beyond me
I have been using the internet, first at work, for very many years and using capital letters is known to be SHOUTING, sorry, paddyann - and that is a known part of internet etiquette.

Typing in all capital letters is internet code for shouting, and it is rude.

Urmstongran Sun 17-Mar-19 12:43:56

I’ve been reading up on Google paddyann and I have to agree with your fiscal consensus. From the limited amount I’ve gleaned Scotland could be a very rich country! The price of oil dipped significantly at one stage and so Scottish independence seemed to be a pipe dream (no pun intended) especially as the Scottish government are billions of pounds in the red. But now more oil fields have been found and the price of a barrel of oil has risen, it seems a possibility again.

Urmstongran Sun 17-Mar-19 12:39:01

It’s because jura2 earlier thought she and Jane10 were in agreement and being politer to one another.
?

paddyann Sun 17-Mar-19 12:25:14

Its not extreme to believe in your own people running your own country...for goodness sake its what most of the world do. Now I dont want to appear rude but many of you on here have no idea of what the facts are .OIL is NOT running out ,there are Trilllions of pounds worth still to be brought to the surface ,One field announced just last week estimates 4 million barrels and thats just one field .Westminster are still selling licenses for oil ,who do you think would buy them if theres none there?
As for my use of capitals well ....I have always emphasised by using capital when writing and I just carry on with it online.I'm not SHOUTING ..and quite frankly why adult women think capital letters are offensive is beyond me !.Davidh why not vote for English independence ?It appears you believe the myth that we take more than we give. Why on earth would WM want to hold onto us if that was the case? They have 92% of the returns on oil ..from our waters and we get 8% .According to a Tory MP on tv this wee Scotland is worth 200 BILLION to the UK economy and him being cautious as he didn't want to tell the whole truth. The problem with some "scots" on here they still believe the crap that comes out of westminster ,even now when the lies and corruption is evident forall to see .

Chewbacca Sun 17-Mar-19 12:05:44

Why so jura? If you're referring to Jane10's phrase "^rabid independence seekers^; why would that be an "unfortunate or unpleasant choice of words"?

OED definition "^having or proceeding from an extreme or fanatical support of or belief in something.^"

jura2 Sun 17-Mar-19 11:48:05

Unfortunate or unpleasant choice of words, Jane- sadly.

Jane10 Sun 17-Mar-19 11:28:24

Och Jabberwok. We're definitely not all rabid independence seekers up here. Check out Chucky's stats. It's the noisy SNP fans that put everyone off. Stay with us. Come to Scotland as often as you want.

MaizieD Sun 17-Mar-19 11:06:02

We personally in middle England would love to be rid of you Scots and your never ending whining!

You speak for yourself, Jabberwock.

I'm not sure what constitutes a 'middle Englander' but I'm glad that I'm not one if that's how unpleasantly xenophobic you have to be to qualify.

I'm sure you don't say that to your 'lifelong friends' in Scotland. though...

And so far I have always strongly agreed- and yet- together means partnership and respect- and this has just not happened during and after the campaign- and is likely to shift opinions in a big way.
