Good News about Brexit! ✅

Anyway, I won £50 last night by answering a question on Brexit in a quiz...so that's my good news ????? and I'm spending every penny on myself...probably half on a van full of Primark clothes and the other half on M&S food. ??

I doubt that anyone and I mean anyone, can say they are truly not prejudiced in any way.
Just, for a moment, think of all the things you read and hear about and make judgement calls on, be it some travellers who leave shed loads of waste, the removal of which is paid for out of your taxes. The despoiling of your green places by said persons so that you feel you cannot let your children play freely.
Multiple occupancy houses allowed to get in a dreadful state of repair with landlords make under stair cupboards into bedrooms for workers who are here 'under the radar' (shall we say)
If your peaceful green area, or wherever you live, saw house prices fall due to the government housing those mainly males unfortunate enough to have arrived here by unconventional means, would you be pleased? Invite them to meet the neighbours?
Would you feel sympathy if they congregated in the street or would you feel uncomfortable going about your business?
These are real scenarios which have been on the news and whole tv programmes have centred around the difficulties of finding solutions.
'Not in my backyard' has even been quoted by members of the public who have ascribed that view to the classes who live in elite enclaves and MPs who have certain security protections.
Don't tell me that no one has any prejudices.

Just an aside Urmstongran, I had also wondered where “take a recommend” comes from. Thought it was like the Americanism “step up to the plate”. I was in the mob. Never heard it. Asked DH who was in the Navy for years a long time ago, he never heard it either. I will consult my Jacks Speak reference book! (Take a make-and -mend means take the afternoon off).

You said urmstongran you were only going to post about Brexit on this thread and weren’t going to post about Brexit after March 29th, didn’t have any conditions. This just shows people can change their minds when knowledge changes and promises aren’t set in stone, plenty of evidence of that at the moment.

30th March and Brexit negotiations are still on going - soon to be without TM at the helm so hopefully we may see real progress in a few weeks. The EU are fed up of us (I don’t blame them with our half in - half out attitude) so perhaps they will be less accommodating and force our negotiating hand soon.

One can hope!

I have only recently discovered the news and politics part of the forum, so am not au fait with the regular posters' attitudes in many respects. Tonight I have read more about a couple of individual posters than I had any idea about.
I don't feel competent to give in depth answers to your many questions about refugees and asylum seekers, since I've had the great fortune never to be counted in those groups. As for the war years, it may be me misunderstanding but I thought we were never invaded, bombed yes, but invaded no. We did evacuate children and women to what we thought were safer parts of the country. I imagine that makes a difference when there are armed people outside your door.

The majority of countries around the world control who enters the country, many much firmer criteria than UK. All however do have special conditions for claimants of asylum or refugee status until their claim is approved or disproved. Despite all of the doomsayers on this site the UK is perceived (as what Dick Whittington thought ) a gold paved utopia to many potential economic migrants. Whilst working abroad the question I got asked most was my nationality, usually followed by 'how do I get to England?'.
The majority of people in this country have no problem whatsoever with controlled immigration as mentioned earlier, nor do the vast majority have issues with true refugees and asylum seekers. What is puzzling to some is that the world is supposed to be a more peaceful place of late yet we have more male refugees and asylum seekers. Despite the desperate situation in Yemen, why is there no Exodus? I know a few made their way to Zanzibar, but not masses. Why did mainly men evacuate from Syria leaving their women to struggle in refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan. Why were none of the other countries in Europe suitable? Why do some people who know they would not meet the criteria for legal entry use crises to exploit the refugee and asylum status, how wrong is that, but it happens. Why were only a few UK children evacuated abroad during the war and not millions of refugees. Why did we accept refugees from other countries during and just after the war when we could barely feed ourselves.
Why do some people want to try and imply others are predjudiced, does it give them a strong sense of superiority to try at every opportunity to call out others.

We agree then Janpax such a negligible number of people. Not worth getting our knickers in a twist over considering the main argument. We can afford to be generous.

Urmstongran the government don't have any finance except that taken from taxpayers, therefore they would be a drain on taxpayers. The percentage is irrelevant, from what she says GG would not want them here. Personally, I'd rather take a more compassionate attitude.

Unless I’m being obtuse (it’s been a long day) if refugees are legally not allowed to work then I presume the government look out for them until their status is decided. I imagine that’s a tiny percentage of our population and clouds the main argument!

What? We have ALWAYS been in Europe. We are Europeans. The UK will remain in Europe but not be in the EU.

It is still there for us if we leave a TRADING AGREEMENT which has morphed into a political union with all the power being held in Brussels and the ultimate aim being a European super state. It is far more than an economic union.

By the way, you can still be exited about Europe. It's not going away. If you love the mix of cultures, people traditions, architecture, history etc, carry on enjoying them. Be assured, British tourism is important to Europe.

GG54 stated "If you have a secure job to go to and enough money to sustain you and anyone who comes with you so you are not a drain on the taxpayers of the country you seek to live in...that is good and right." Lily asked what about asylum seekers and refugees who are not legally allowed to work, I'd also ask where do they fit in with GG's rules?
