Footage showing British soldiers shooting at a large photograph of Jeremy Corbyn as target practice. I hope TM and the Defence Secretary stand up in the House today and condemn it thoroughly.

vigdis Thu 04-Apr-19 22:30:29

I just wish this issue was not, as it has become, about Corbyn.
IMHO, using members of Parliament WHICHEVER party they represent, as legitimate targets in a Government, MoD training exercise, is plainly wrong. As the MoD appear to think also.
Regardless of my political affiliation, I don't wish to see either May or Corbyn, or their supporters being attacked, abused, or worse, because some idiots feel they have been given licence to be abusive. And there are enough idiots around to make this a possibility.

I agree with Eleothan It's one thing if a group of random people perpetrate such acts, like the Margaret Thatcher things.. It's quite another for members of the British Army to do so and unacceptable.

Opal Thu 04-Apr-19 12:21:56

Jalima - your post states "I believe that a shooting range chose to have a photo of Shamima Begum as their target, along with images of Osama Bin Laden, Adolf Hitler and Margaret Thatcher.
Apparently it is just light-hearted fun including for children - would you believe."

What part have I taken out of context and twisted around? It DOES sound like you disapprove of Hitler's image being used as a target, otherwise why would you even mention it? I also lost relatives in WW2, and my father fought in North Africa and Italy. I see nothing wrong in using Hitler's face as a shooting target for soldiers, as I'm sure millions of soldiers would have done in WW2. What I do disagree with, however, is taking children to a shooting range in the first place. If that was your original point, and I misunderstood, then I apologise.

Regardless of who asked for links to effigies, have you no conscience or respect.
I thought better of you but I see I was wrong.
Fancy sharing photos of yobs burning effigies of an ex prime minister.
You astonish me. Do you think it's ok for you to share photos of other people's loved ones being parodied in a grotesque manner?

Grandad1943 Wed 03-Apr-19 22:53:18

Many thanks, Anniebach, it's getting late now and I am working again tomorrow, so, will have a look at the links when I get home tomorrow evening as I genuinely did not know that occurred.

Again many thanks anniebach.

Anniebach Wed 03-Apr-19 22:44:37

Granddad 1943, you asked Seeker for links showing effigies of Thatcher when she died. I have posted three links,

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 22:37:47

You know what happens to people who can't bite bullets.
They eat grass (grassers)

Grandad1943 Wed 03-Apr-19 22:37:43

GabriellaG54, I believe your series of above posts states all that requires to be known about yourself. grin

Jalima1108 Wed 03-Apr-19 22:34:33

Opal
And in response to an earlier post, I don't see anything wrong with putting Hitler's face on a shooting target!!!!!

You have taken part of my post completely out of context and twisted it around to make it sound as I was disapproving of that.
I disagree, as I'm sure would millions of lost souls during WW2.
And one of them was DH's father so I would like an apology, because that is NOT what I said at all. and your post is a lie.

My post of Wed 03-Apr-19 11:12:03 states that a shooting range has images of many people including Hitler, Margaret Thatcher etc at which even six year olds are encouraged to shoot.

Is that right? Is it light-hearted fun?

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 22:08:32

Grandad1843

Yes, you're so right. There are some truly wonderful people in this world ...and then there is me. Little old me. Not as old as you but still old.
I stand out as a beacon of uniqueness giving hope to all who are flayed by the awfulness of this planet as, if I can survive, so can they.
I do not wish to be counted with the wonderful people of this world. It's enough to be the one and only.
The lone ranger stranger. ??????

The ghastly Al Fayed banned soldiers in uniform for entering Harrods

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 21:58:08

...and actually I left school at 15, not having sat any exams.
Life and reading teach you so much more than a few years at school but better to have a reason than actually using a spellchecker.
Take care.

A pub refused to serve soldiers as they celebrated their return from fighting in Afghanistan in
a parade through the town.
Staff at The Bull in Romford, Essex, told stunned troops that they were ‘not allowed to serve squaddies’ when the troops tried to order a round after their homecoming march through
^ the town on Tuesday.^

The astonishing ban was imposed on the 600-strong 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment, who have lost 16 men in Afghanistan, on the day they paraded through town to mark the end
of its final tour of the war-torn country.

Oh MaizieD
I am very familiar with all the conventions and restrictions on GN so there is no need to excuse me...although it was more an attempt at putting yourself alongside gramps as an ally.
In future, I'll assume that all poor spelling (including my own) is due to dyslexia.
One never knows how many there are as it's an invisible disability.
I'm so very sorry that you were offended on behalf of someone else.

Exactly Gabriella I believe that armed forces in USA get flight upgrades when wearing uniform, meals in restaurants and generally applauded.

Our personnel are unable to wear their uniform outside of “duties” needing special permission to do so.

I feel sorry that it is no longer acceptable to be proud to be British (or English even) unable to fly the English flag which has been hi jacked by extremists.

Grandad1943 Wed 03-Apr-19 21:29:19

GabriellaG54 Quote [Y'know...I was just thinking (only once a day...as a treat)] End Quote

I will certainly second that GabriellaG54. grin

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 21:22:41

Y'know...I was just thinking (only once a day...as a treat) wink that lots of other countries proudly fly their flag, wave it on special days, wear the emblem on their clothes but not we English people.
Posters who have been talking about patriotism and patriots started that train of thought.
It seems to denote distasteful fervour which some people associate with TR and the BDL.
Why has such a proud symbol become something to be ashamed of and linked to despicable words and acts?
The Welsh flag has no such connotations nor has the Saltire.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 03-Apr-19 21:18:32

“Gallows/Black humour” is a part of life.

Everyone of us has coping mechanisms, these “lads” have not killed anyone.

Was it acceptable to put it on social media, probably not, it’s being investigated by MOD.

None of us are perfect and we are all
capable of making mistakes.

I am still extremely proud of the British Armed Forces.

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 21:10:46

Is he the type to say 'rules is rules' and goes by the book on every aspect of the law without applying common sense and won't even put the key in the car before checking that everyone is belted up and breathalysed?
Nothing wrong with that except that some things are a bridge too far.

sunseeker Wed 03-Apr-19 21:06:40

But Eloethan where was the outrage when those things happened?

GabriellaG54 Wed 03-Apr-19 21:05:30

any aspect of life M0nica?
Even at home? shock ?

Eloethan Wed 03-Apr-19 21:02:43

We are talking about soldiers in the British Army - not a random bunch of people whose behaviour after Thatcher's death many people - including people who thoroughly disliked Thatcher, including myself, thought was unacceptable.

Those people represented nobody but themselves. Soldiers in the British Army represent Britain and are bound by certain rules of military conduct.
