Hang on a minute, we had a referendum that we were told would be legally binding
Here we go again...
No, you were not told it would be legally binding. You were told that whatever the result it would be implemented. This is not the same as legally binding. Had the result been legally binding it would have been declared null and void by now because of the illegal acts committed by some of the Leave campaigns.
Parliament voted for the referendum on the understanding that it was advisory. Not only was this point made very clear to them in the House of Commons briefing papers produced for them before the vote was taken in Parliament but they were also verbally assured of this by David Liddington when Alex Salmond proposed an amendment to the bill to require a supermajority for any action to be taken. This is all on record in Hansard and on film of the parliamentary debates on the Referendum Bill.
I have posted this over and over again in the last 3 years. I have copied and pasted the relevant text from both the Hansard record of the debate and the HOC Briefing paper. If Leavers care to ignore this and persist in believing what is not true that is their affair. But no matter how many times they assert that the result was legally binding they cannot make it so.
Another vote would not be a 'betrayal' of 'democracy'. It would be correcting a grave wrong. A PM with any sense of morality and justice would have voided the result as soon as they knew it was produced by a corrupted referendum, put in place measures to ensure it didn't happen again, and rerun it.
We know that May knew it was a corrupted referendum because her Counsel said so, in court. Also on record.
Then perhaps the current mess, and the rise of a populist, antidemocratic, money grabbing, far right demagogue would have been avoided.
