Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?
(792 Posts)There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?
Actually, as an aside - I thought the young ‘uns said they were against Brexit because they wanted to travel, do they intend swimming the channel then walking?
?
Yes Urmstongran, I have that thought too. But I guess we can't really expect them not to travel. Would be a sad old world if we all starting looking in on ourselves.
GS is going to US for a World Scout Rally in July. I will suggest he gets a rowing boat.
We must hope they get a move on with the electric powered planes they showed on last night's programme.
Some grandparents fly to another country to see their families, , Emma Thompson flies to America for the Oscars , far more important
I suggested to DH that he build a sailing ship so that we could visit our family but I then got a lecture on conserving the forests and how we should be planting more trees.
I am not out of the issue if climate change of course not it’s a massive issue.
I am however put off the protesters methods and their selfish reckless disregard for other people’s jobs and lives.
Sorry I meant I am not put off by the issue!
Bloody autocorrect
And less of the hectoring and finger pointing please.
It’s quite ok to be just as worried and passionate about issues like climate change but feel these protests are selfish and wrong
I see the protesters have said there will be no further disruption to Heathrow or any airport.
Guessing they see the irony of Emma’s flight. At least they have that much sense
They’re probably all worried that they will be called out as the hypocrites many of them are, when they splash their holiday photos all over FB !
DH has designed an elastic plane which flies over our office so could be the future . Now if we could just get an elastic band long enough......
I think they will not disrupt Heathrow any more because if they do they know they will be arrested and they will face much harsher punishment than those on the main protest.
How are you so certain that all these protesters aren’t really interested in the issue? That they are just middle class layabouts who obviously don’t believe in the cause because some of them may haven take the odd flight? What if some of them do grown their own, try to live a plastic free lifestyle and reduce their own carbon footprint, are you going to point and sneer at them? I saw a vicar being carted off by the police from the demo, she must have been all of 80, was she just a hypocrite out for a jolly? Don’t tar everyone with the same brush just because you don’t like their hair/ clothes whatever. How many of you live perfect lives?
It is not one extreme or the other for most people crystaltipps, although you seem to be trying to make it that.
Many of us do grow their own, try to live a plastic free lifestyle and reduce their own carbon footprint, but think that there may just be better ways to get the message across to politicians who are now on their Easter recess and lobby those governments which are not really tackling the issue at all because their leader may be a denier.
gillybob you seem determined to make light of global warming. Do you really not care what sort of planet your children's children inherit? Bit short sighted think.
How many of you live perfect lives?
I don't think that anyone can lead a totally perfect life though many try their best.
Do you?
Can someone please explain...I keep hearing celebrities (Emma Thompson latest) saying our generation has failed our children re global warming.
In my childhood we all had coal fires, our factories, were powererd by mainly coal our gas and electricity was derived from coal or other fossil based fuel, this as a result of generations before us. Our generation has cleaned up most these. We had returnable milk and pop bottles and our own shopping bags, I could go on. I should imagine many of our generation are eco aware. Why are we to blame? BTW Emma Thompson flew over from LA to take part in the London demonstrations to praise those taking part and blame the older generation.
Sadly until places like India, China, Russia and other countries start effectively tacking their industrial CO2 emissions and we find less polluting forms if transport worldwide then these demonstrations are nothing but a single raindrop it needs a torrent to clean up.
I'm sure a vast majority of the protesters have a secure income to allow them to be away from their employment (if they have any) and away from their families are they students on Easter leave/teachers etc.
The companies they have disrupted have had to lay off lots and lots of people, delivery drivers and the like who work on zero hours contract so those poor people will be without income and have to go cap in hand for more benefits to make up the loss of earnings.I feel London must be the laughing stock of the World.
I always buy loose fruit and veg and it goes straight in my hessian bag/, however, regarding the wider issue, I do think that politicians could take note of EP when he sang 'A little less conversation a little more action please'.
I do like the notion of one of the organisers, a super Dr from leafy Stroud, Glos, which incidentally happens to be one, if not the greenest town in England. Anyway, moving on from that trivia, whilst she was being interviewed by Nick Robinson, she suggested that the harrassed workers trying to earn their crust "take the day off" to join them, how jolly it all sounds, although Nick did seem to blow a gasket somewhat, how rude
clearly doesn't appreciate the sacrifice of driving all the way to London to make a bloody nuisance of themselves to highlight the problem of deadly emissions , not to mention Emma cutting her Ellen de Generes interview to a minimum so she too could jet in from LA to join them. I did run that past one of my sons, who no doubt a decade or so ago, espousing his support for Green demos etc. this sort of thing would have been right up his street when he had more time on his hands to ponce about on pavements with tents, could do that," I'm sure your employers would be only too happy for you to give up a day for such a worthy cause" says I . "Absolutely Not! we're all way to busy" came the emphatic reply. I don't know....some of them are just proper boring once they leave Neverland
I find it incredible that those of a certain age, and it is gransnet, seem incapable of understanding that all posters and indeed most of the country are worried and concerned about climate change and want to help and want politicians to
Focus on this but equally criticise this protest as it costs jobs and income in the poorest of society.
In my experience only teenagers see things in black and white! Surely you mature to see things from other people’s perspective as you get older. Or you should do.
Surely you mature to accept there has to be a balance and a sense of what’s acceptable and can then assimilate.
I am absolutely not “making light of global warming” . I am making light of the hypocrites dancing around London which is very different .
You clearly don’t know me one iota Gonegirl ( thank goodness ) that’s it really.
error: too not to busy
Well said Mycatisahacker!
I have been thinking much the same.
This is too important to be just criticising others for being imperfect humans.
We should be encouraging all efforts to bring about change from consuming less ourselves to helping world leaders to see how they can effect change. There's room for more than one campaign.
I and my family do our bit for climate change, but I am slightly suspicious that this "protest" is in Uni/College/School holidays..........not disrupting their work/education but is stopping lots of folk going about their daily life/getting to their place of work.
Much better to use your/their vote at the balllot box?
Everyone seems to vere around the elephant in the room...population explosion.
