Climate Change Protests - will they make a difference?

There has been so far 3 days of climate change protests in Central London and other locations. They’ve disrupted traffic and inconvenienced a few, but have been in the main peaceful and has had a festival atmosphere. It looks like these protests will continue. Personally I feel climate change is a really important issue and should be the one that our esteemed politicians should be acting on and discussing but they aren’t. I’m in no way part of this group but, with some reservations, applaud their efforts and hope it does bring the issue to the fore. It does highlight how far our police resources are stretched that they can’t be stopped though. If you don’t live or work in the capital you probably don’t care about the protest , but hopefully you do care about the issues, and these protests it may be coming to a town near you. What do others think?

Yes I saw the debris left behind phoenix and as you say rather a lot of plastic bottles too....but hey, as mycat has said, don't do as I do... hmm

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 13:36:06

Plastic bottles?? Well what a surprise. Do as I say not what I do.

Wonder how many of them will be flying on holiday this year?

phoenix Wed 24-Apr-19 13:34:20

Do anyone see the mess that was left behind? Rather a lot of plastic bottles, from the picture that I saw.

I have no idea how mild or severe her Aspergers is and neither should you or any of us.

But her being thrust in the spotlight you can be quite sure she will have no dignity or privacy again.

Poor kid.

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 13:30:27

I am not criticising her I am criticising the adults around her who are using her.,

She’s a vulnerable minor who should be protected from the worlds media.

Again I say your passion for this demonstration is clouding your moral compass

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 13:13:27

I'm sure the drivers soon twigged.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 13:12:45

I don't think Greta has a "special need". Her Aspergers must be very mild. She seems more in control than so many other young kids of that age. I don't understand how anyone can criticise her or the people helping her to do it.

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 13:12:44

Well no I think pollution went up didn’t it with the parked cars running their engines.

This needs far more joined up thinking than a mob of protesters disrupting everyone

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 13:11:23

I completely agree we need to curb city traffic. In my view only the disabled. Emergency vehicles and delivery/plumbers builders etc should have access. I think there are far too many taxis too.,not worth it in London it’s quicker on public transport

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 13:10:26

Those few days must have been a welcome relief from a clean air point of view.

crystaltipps Wed 24-Apr-19 13:04:00

Sense like everyone puts traffic and cars above people and pedestrians. One good thing about blocking roads ( there were very few) was it was nice to walk down traffic free roads without far too many cars, vans, etc. There is too much traffic in London-full stop. Attempts to curb it have come under fire from the car driving lobby who think they should have priority. Roads are always being closed in London not just for protests.

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 12:23:32

I am not using Aspergers as a tool against her I simply think children shouldn’t be paraded on tv and exploited by adults. Doubly so when that child has a special need.

It’s not a pleasant sight.

Alexa
I’m just repeating myself because I am really interested in getting an answer to my question. Several posts above now.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 11:43:19

Sorry gillybob. You said wages. Getting muddled by the different threads now.

I dispute the wages thing though.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 11:41:44

It's been a very quiet "debate". She is the one trying to 'groom' us.

Stop using her Aspergers as a tool against her. The Aspergers she has must be very mild. She seems so good at interacting with others.

gillybob Wed 24-Apr-19 11:41:30

Did I say anyone lost their job Gonegirl Did I ?

I DID NOT !

I said "I do feel for those ordinary people who are paid by the hour and _will have lost wages_ during over the last couple of weeks" .

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 11:40:20

Gonegirl

Yes people were laid off due to the protests. Many on zero hours contracts. You should listen to the radio more and local London stations not radio 4 perhaps.

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 11:38:13

She very bravely started the whole thing off

What climate change debate?? Don’t be silly. That debate is older than this kid.

And yes I do say akin to grooming as she’s obviously being manipulated by older adults for a cause.

And now we hear she has Aspergers then I find it doubly troubling

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 11:38:05

No one is saying that. Each to their own.

The protestors cleaned up. There were plenty of road diversions. No one lost their jobs. Or do you have evidence of the latter?

blondenana Wed 24-Apr-19 11:36:43

I wonder if these young people will remember that they are as guilty as anyone with their mobile phones and plastic bottles of water etc, hmm do they just think its everyone else
I agree Governments should do more about climate change, but i think these protesters are being very unfair disrupting peoples holidays and also people trying to get to work etc

gillybob Wed 24-Apr-19 11:35:02

Gillybob and co - ok, grumble about the inconvenience ER is putting people to if you like

Firstly Rowantree I do not have an "and Co." on Gransnet confused

and secondly whilst the protesters, road closures and filth left behind etc. do not effect me directly (as I live no where near London) I do feel for those ordinary people who are paid by the hour and will have lost wages during over the last couple of weeks. Likewise people who have been unable to get to hospital appointments etc.

To be honest I am fed up with the people who poo-poo and pull apart those of us who do as much as they can for the environment _within the confines of their own individual circumstances_. Are they saying that unless we all walk out of work and responsibilities and camp in London we are not doing enough? Ridiculous.

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 11:34:28

"almost akin to grooming"!!! Just how far are you going to take this? grin

Gonegirl Wed 24-Apr-19 11:32:43

How can she be a "poster girl"?! She, very bravely, started the whole thing off. She is heading the youth side of this campaign. Why should that be described as being a "poster girl"?

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 11:32:22

I find it actually very worrying as we all know where very passionate views take young people.

As you point out Maryeliza teenage brains are very vulnerable to exploitation by adults with agendas.

Glad you see the similarity

Mycatisahacker Wed 24-Apr-19 11:30:11

My 16 year olds didn’t watch the kardashians all day neither did we allow other adults to exploit them.

Normal parenting falls in the middle.
