Got a standing ovation. Very deserved. Good on him

Anniebach Thu 25-Apr-19 20:40:30

Apart from fsmily and friends who can recall if there was a report of a murder in 2001

trisher Thu 25-Apr-19 21:42:46

And in 18 years time will the same be being said about Lyra Mckee?

Anniebach Thu 25-Apr-19 21:48:57

I don’t know, who knows the future

There have been so many murders that its difficult to recall all of them. Certain ones will stick in the minds of individual people for different reasons. The two soldiers surrounded by a crowd at a funeral still gets me.
I hope Trisher is wrong. It's disturbing to think that there could be a different attitude to" loyalist" activities. I can't think of any examples. Certainly I and my friends feel disgusted by all criminal activities.
I have just watched the news which showed teenagers with a crate full of petrol bombs in L/derry and a person whom they assume is the gunman. Very sinister looking.

Let's hope that more good folk in Northern Ireland turn their backs on tribal sectarianism and support the Alliance Party.

Gonegirl Fri 26-Apr-19 19:12:10

I think they should stop calling these people "The New IRA". They are just young thugs. Criminals. Don't give them a status.

Callistemon Fri 26-Apr-19 19:45:11

They are not, as one poster said on another thread, in any way 'freedom fighters'. It is just a convenient 'cause' to use to make their criminal behaviour somehow sound legitimate.
They are nasty murderous thugs and criminals and would probably behave the same anyway.

I hope we never forget Lyra McKee.

varian Fri 26-Apr-19 19:59:12

We should never forget Lyra Mckee, neither should we ever forget Jo Cox MP.

These were both good brave women and stood for the values we should all defend against the forces of evil.

annep1 Fri 26-Apr-19 20:59:56

I agree Varian. Both very brave ladies.

I listened to Arlene Foster this morning on R4. One of the issues that is holding up getting the NI Assembly up and running again is the DUPs utter antagonism to gay marriage. She just couldn’t see the irony in this.

Anniebach Sat 27-Apr-19 10:06:45

Thought you would support the DUP Maryeliza, founded by Ian Paisley who was so anti Roman Catholic.

EllanVannin Sat 27-Apr-19 10:14:24

I can't stand any of those Irish leaders at all. None of them have the compassion that they ought to have in such a troubled country. They should try listening to their people good and bad !!

EllanVannin Sat 27-Apr-19 10:14:59

That priest was right !

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 10:15:47

You never disappoint ab never.

Anniebach Sat 27-Apr-19 10:23:17

But maryeliza you criticised the RC priest and spoke of hypocrisy and criticise Arlene Foster for not being a hypocrite

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 10:27:16

Not biting ab. Other posters I’m sure can see the irony in the DUP’s position. Also some of us can see there is an issue between personal religious beliefs and what a political party should foist on a country. I appreciate not everyone can handle the undoubted nuance in this statement

Anniebach Sat 27-Apr-19 12:13:22

Why are personal religious beliefs different to personal beliefs

annep1 Sat 27-Apr-19 14:43:59

I think the DUP and the priest have the same views on marriage and abortion, which is interesting.
DUP are willing to go back to Stormont immediately and discuss these issues whilst dealing with essentials like health and education. SF won't. How anyone ever solves this is beyond me. Two years wasted.
And yes I also believe religion should not influence political decisions. But we have the parties that the electorate choose. And no one wants direct rule. (I personally have no objections)

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 14:48:03

What issues are the DUP willing to discuss anne? Surely not same sex marriage after what AF has been saying yet again these last few days?

Anniebach Sat 27-Apr-19 15:04:08

Is same sex marriage more important than health

EllanVannin Sat 27-Apr-19 15:10:39

How very archaic and dangerous religion is !!

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 15:11:27

<sigh> it’s not a competition

Anniebach Sat 27-Apr-19 15:33:36

Certaintly shouldn’t , a government needs to prioritise though, two years without a government because of disagreements over same sex marriage seems to show same sex marriage is of more importance than health and education.

maryeliza54 Sat 27-Apr-19 15:36:46

So you think the two years was because of that? I’d laugh if it wasn’t so serious

annep1 Sat 27-Apr-19 16:03:10

So, you tell me, MaryEliza. Why will SF not go back to work??
