I paid a visit to Brussels in 1989, during a Seminar at the EU Building it was clear that the only contribution by the UK was our financial input, that is all they wanted us for & one of the reasons they don't want us to leave. There was no mention of any goods etc that the UK produces although we were lectured on the contributions of France Germany et al.

EU cannot balance "the books" which have not been audited for years, if the EU was a UK Company run on those lines it would have been struck off at Companies House.

I have wanted to leave the EU for 30 years as they perceive the UK as merely a cash cow.

“Maxdecat” there is absolutely no reason to be rude! I didn’t say anything about people giving their opinion and I certainly didn’t mention any particular political campaign. I wasn’t rude to anyone! But you only read what you wanted to read and flame me for it. Of course it’s a political discussion and anyone it entitled to express their own, but not to tell people to vote in a particular way, I would call that campaigning, wouldn’t you!

That told us that you are an expat and are desperate to have a say in how the rest of us that have not run away from the UK should lead our lives. If you want to be heard get back here pronto, otherwise keep your expat opinions to yourself.

well said Dinahmo. over here the French are horrified that the referendum was a 50/50 vote. it should be at least 60/40 when it is status quo versus the unknown.

And 1 million majority is risible in a country of 65 million. Theresa May's deal is disastrous, as if we were still in the EU with our hands tied. No deal is worse. Brexit has been proved to be a very bad, expensive idea and left us a laughing stock globally.

Thankfully all our French friends and neighbours are in sympathy with us and do not take us European Brits for fools.

Maxdecatt - I would expect a second referendum to require a sensible majority - ie 60% in favour, rather than a first past the post. In a country with a population in the region of 65 million a majority of around 1 million is not satisfactory - either way.

Mojomax - what on earth are you on about? This thread has a political subject, one which has exercised many correspondents. People are voicing their opinions - I have not seen any signs of political campaigning. You do not have to read threads that you might consider to be political.

Just so you know, I have reported all those messages who have used Gransnet for political campaigning. We all have our views on Brexit and support whoever we want, but Gransnet is not a platform for those who wish to persuade another person to vote in any particular way. Use the proper channels.

I've spent a lot of time over the past 14 years in Eastern Europe, 5 of them living there. As you so rightly said: Germany rule there. It's also very noticeable how many of them speak German.

I shall vote for the Brexit Party if we do have EU elections.

Like many, I imagine Parliament will agree to May's appalling Withdrawal Agreement before then rather than face the truth, that people are angry and WILL vote for the Brexit party as a show of strength and as a rebuke to the Conservative and Labour Parties.

It's an absolute disgrace that after three years of negotiations the UK is in such a state. Leave meant Remain all along. Our present collection of MPs are not to be trusted and I hope the Brexit Party has them running scared, now and in the future.

It's the only alternative for those who have watched as those Leavers voted for have betrayed us and played games.

MOXEYNS Of course Germany puts in far more than it takes out. On the face of it that is the case. The truth is that Germany puts in the money which the EU then lends to the basket-cases so that they can then buy mainly German goods. In essence Germany is financing the sales it makes. The result is German industry thrives and the borrowers have no need to invest in their own manufacturing base. They become receivers, not producers. The EU loans have to be repaid, when the inevitable defaults start (Greece is a good example) they are given more loans to repay the previous loan, but always a little more to spend importing from (mainly) Germany. When Germany decides to seize (reposess) the assets they will be allowed to do so by EU law. Basically, poorer nations are sucked into a vortex of debt from which there is no escape. So yes. Germany puts in more ...but ends up taking out everything.

It is no secret that the powers that be are determined that the EU will become a Federal body regardless of what the people want. This is not something that I would want even though my belief that we would be better off with Sovereign rule has been slightly tarnished by the fiasco going on in our Parliament. Anybody who has ever planned a family meal knows how hard it is to please everybody so I find it incredible that anyone can suggest that 28 nations can agree such important things without it becoming cumbersome and inefficient...as it is!
I'd like to see the whole shebang disbanded and to start again with better system in the UK working with a better, streamlined EU. I'd also like all my teeth back.

Maxdecatt - you might be surprised if you actually went and got the facts on relative member states' contributions. Germany, for instance, takes out far less than it puts in. But don't let facts stop you.

A second referendumn is held and Reamain win by a million votes. Is that acceptable to you? Or if Leave win by a million votes....will that be acceptable to you? Hard decisions you need to make. If you were a democrat they would present no problem...but as you are obviously not a democrat you will twist and turn and moan till the cows come home...or until you get your own way and to hell with democracy.

The Lib Dems and Change UK are going after the same votes. Brexit Party and UKIP are going after the same votes. Labour and Tories are both saying Leave but on terms that mean not really. It is going to be a strange election.

DINAHMO. Your argument is just as ludicrous as saying that the runner who finished a second or two behind the winner should be rewarded with the winners prize. It is called democracy, something the UK latched on to years ago and has tried to force down the throats of "lesser" nations.

maxdecatt - how many more times do some of need to point out that the referendum majority was about 1.4 million. To make decisions that affect the who;e population based upon that small number is entirely undemocratic.

VARIAN. The LibDem leader, Vince Cable, made it quite clear on TV yesterday and today that the LibDems have one aim and ambition. STOP BREXIT. That is a deliberate decision to thwart the democratic vote to leave the EU. If LibDems cannot accept democratic decisions they are well on the road to fascist dictatorship ideology.

If they are convinced theirs is the right way to vote...just get on with it. Stop trashing other views just as it's wrong and unacceptable (so I've been told by those same people) to denounce other religions.
If you don't agree with the way others think, why not spend less time talking about it?
