Names are coming along at a regular basis, and with May having a meeting with Brady today, it is likely that she will be persuaded to give a date of her departure.

So let’s start looking at who would make the most suitable Tory leader.

The first out of the hat is Boris Johnson.
His first hurdle is facing court to defend the charge of lying before the referendum.

I expect that was a joke though Granny23 it’s that type of publication. hmm

Granny23 Sat 25-May-19 14:05:14

Would you still have thought that a joke if it had been directed at an ethnic Minority or, heaven forfend. at YOUR own race, nation or locality?

Mycatisahacker Sat 25-May-19 14:15:34

Yes!

I am English! The Scots are perpetually making jokes about the English and rightly so.

If it’s not malicious and done in jest what’s wrong with that!

Have you heard Frankie Boyle?

Mycatisahacker Sat 25-May-19 14:24:02

And a Brummie!

We are used to it and find it funny!

MarthaBeck Sat 25-May-19 17:16:04

Tribal politics supporting prejudices and dogma has been at the very heart of political distrust by the electorate for too long. We now need urgent electoral reform but unlikely Corbyn will agree. I certainly could not vote for a party led by the Boris the buffoon.

Not just you MB - fellow Tory MP Rory Stewart (another leadership contender ) has said he would not serve in a BJ government. Good to see there is at least one honest Tory MP who tells it like it is. He is an intelligent man and knows full well how disastrous a no-deal brexit would be for this country.

Naturally the dogs of "brexit-at-any-cost" led by total failure Iain Duncan-Smith, have been quick to condemn him, reiterating the nonsense that the threat of a no-deal brexit can be used as a bargaining chip. What utter nonsense - it's like saying if you don't do what I want I'll shoot myself.

Urmstongran Sat 25-May-19 19:30:44

No it’s not varian!

It’s saying ‘let’s talk sensibly for BOTH sides’ and, after goodwill on both sides, if we cannot find a consensus then sadly, we must go.

EllanVannin Sat 25-May-19 19:52:46

No mention of Sajid Javid then ?

M0nica Sat 25-May-19 19:59:30

Responding to the OP.

I do not give a damn who is the next PM.

I have been interested in politics and current affairs since I was about 4 and actively involved to a greater or lesser extent since I was 18, but over the last four years as our two main parties have descended to reduced the governance of this country to the level of a group of drunks at a stag party, my interest in the subject has completely drained away.

As I said I could not care less who heads either of the parties provide none of them have had any current involvment with the managing of their respective parties for the last 5 years. Better still let us make it impossible for anyone currently in Parliament to stand for re-election for the next 10 years and see if a parliament of complete tyros can make a better fist of it than the current lot. They certainly couldn't be any worse.

Urmstongran Sat 25-May-19 20:08:46

Oh Monica I do think I agree with you. If only we could have ‘time out’ for a reset!

But interested in current affairs since you were 4y??

My god, my grandchildren must be intellectually challenged!! No wonder some of us (me) cannot step up to the plate on here giving intelligent arguments!

varian Sat 25-May-19 20:32:51

The off repeated brexiters argument about "keeping no deal on the table" does not bear logical examintion.

If you are negotiating with the seller of a house and do not get a satisfactory deal you walk away and keep your money. You are no worse off than when you started.

If you haggle with a market trader over the price of an item you might like to buy and he will not drop the price to the sum you are prepared to pay you walk away and you still have the same amount of money in your pocket. You have lost nothing.

However if we were to inflict a no-deal brexit on ourselves not only would we have lost our EU membership and all its benefits, it would irrevocably damage our economy, our security and our international reputation. It would hurt our EU partners, especially Ireland, but it would hurt us far far more and everyone knows it. There is no comparison.

GabriellaG54 Sat 25-May-19 20:35:25

The Scotch?

GabriellaG54 Sat 25-May-19 20:39:37

Yes, I certainly would Granny23

GabriellaG54 Sat 25-May-19 20:45:41

?...BJ. The very idea leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth ???

Mycatisahacker Sat 25-May-19 21:34:04

The scotch/the welsh /the English/French/Spanish...

lemongrove Sat 25-May-19 21:38:46

I think Monica must mean 14...... no four year old, no matter how precocious is remotely interested in politics.?

jura2 Sat 25-May-19 21:39:14

anglo-saxons are German/Dutch

lemongrove Sat 25-May-19 21:42:52

Rory Stewart may have a change of heart all of a sudden ?
It has been known!

No deal should never have been taken off the table in the first place, it would have concentrated the minds of the EU negotiators.

lemongrove Sat 25-May-19 21:46:22

Scotch? ??
Who wrote that doggerel? Is it from ages ago?

MawBroonsback Sat 25-May-19 23:02:51

The use of “Scotch” for Scottish suggests someone like Dr Johnson
“ the noblest prospect that a Scotchman sees, is the high road that leads him to England”
Asked by a Scot what he thought of Scotland he replied”That it is a very vile country to be sure, Sir”
And “Much may be made of a Scotchman, if he be caught young”
Or “What enemy would invade Scotland, where there is nothing to be got?”

???????????????????????????????????

Gonegirl Sat 25-May-19 23:08:00

Rory Stewart can't possibly stand. Not with that face

MawBroonsback Sat 25-May-19 23:12:23

Oh I think he’s rather sweet.
He is however way too brainy and talented for the Tories to select him.
(Is it true his nickname is Florence of Arabia?)

GabriellaG54 Sat 25-May-19 23:33:17

Rory Stewart gives every impression of being extremely intelligent, very level headed and fair minded, and very measured. I like him. Whether he would be elected as party leader is anyone’s guess, but I think he would do the job well. Since I’m not a member of the Conservative Party, or indeed any other political party, I will simply have to watch from the sidelines and hope they make less of a hash of it this time. (Because I never did rate Theresa May as Home Secretary or Prime Minister, but then they didn’t ask me!)

What on earth have looks got to do with anything? Fortunately looks don't cancel out intellect.
