Names are coming along at a regular basis, and with May having a meeting with Brady today, it is likely that she will be persuaded to give a date of her departure.

So let’s start looking at who would make the most suitable Tory leader.

The first out of the hat is Boris Johnson.
His first hurdle is facing court to defend the charge of lying before the referendum.

kittylester, the Blue Rinse Brigade is an older term used to describe the Conservative women members of the party. They were very much seen as the hardline right-wing working backbone of the party in Margret Thatcher's time.

Just a quick question - who is 'the blue rinse brigade'?

GracesGranMK3 Fri 17-May-19 07:06:38

I am sure you are right Whitewave, that it will be between the far right and the more moderate side of the Tories. It seems yet another putsch from the Right imo. First they change our relationship with Europe by what they, I consider, turned into an illegal referendum. Now we have every chance of a far-right Prime Minister foisted upon us by the votes of less than 100,000 of the electorate.

I do believe it will be a far-right candidate and I believe it will be the final straw for many of the "one nation" Conservatives (although I see the right are trying to steel that description too.) How that plays out will undoubtedly mean more hardship for many while a "few" of the authoritarian right take over the country.

Tory Leadership contest! Stab vests at the ready.

lemongrove Thu 16-May-19 21:10:15

If Boris gets to the ‘last two standing’ he will be the next PM.

Mycatisahacker Thu 16-May-19 20:34:03

I can’t see Boris getting it I think he’s made too many gaffs! Kind you the pool is shallow.

Maybe grayling grin

FarNorth Thu 16-May-19 20:30:58

Anyone but Boorish Boris.

suzied Thu 16-May-19 17:39:34

Theres a huge "B*llcks to Brexit" sign I quite often pass, it was put there by Pimlico Plumbers, a big plumbing firm. I don't think the LDs made it up, also there were loads of the same slogan stickers being given out on the last big anti Brexit march. I've still got one on my rucksack.
Next tory leader? My moneys on Jeremy Hunt - I think the blue rinse brigade like him.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 16-May-19 16:57:50

Basically it will be a contest between the far right and the more moderate wing of the Tory party.

Expect blood to flow

humptydumpty Thu 16-May-19 16:57:32

Yes, sorry my heads all over the place today! I meant Dominic Grieve!!!!

Whitewavemark2 Thu 16-May-19 16:55:26

What for Tory leader humpty ??

Mind you- they haven’t got a single individual who we could have confidence in as to their competence or ability

humptydumpty Thu 16-May-19 16:52:15

I would have liked Keir Starmer, pity...

lemongrove Thu 16-May-19 16:25:32

I was very surprised to see that Lib Dem slogan, I must admit I thought they were better than that.

lemongrove Thu 16-May-19 16:23:48

Yes, he definitely is ( he was always going to, of course.)

Whitewavemark2 Thu 16-May-19 16:08:14

So Johnson definately going for leadership

I prefer our main slogan STOP BREXIT, but I see the B version has gone down a storm with younger folk - have a look at Mumsnet.

Firecracker123 Sun 12-May-19 21:48:43

Varian I know you are an avid Lib Dem supporter what do you think of their new slogan "Bollocks to Brexit" bit down market in my opinion.

varian Sun 12-May-19 15:55:49

The Good Friday Agreement is an international treaty and if we renege on that and endanger the hard-won peace on the island of Ireland, our reputation as a trustworthy nation will be irrevocably damaged.

Firecracker123 Sun 12-May-19 11:39:46

It's not Mrs Mays deal it's an International Treaty (the worse deal in history) and it never will be ratified she's delusional. I hope she stays on as PM though as she's a good recruiter for the Brexit Party ☺.

Prime Minister Theresa May could set a date for her resignation in the coming days, the chairman of the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee has said.

The PM said she will step down when her Brexit deal is ratified by Parliament - but some MPs want a fixed date.

Sir Graham Brady said he expects a "clear understanding" of that timetable once she has met the committee, which she will do on Wednesday.

Sir Graham also refused to rule out running himself to replace Mrs May.

Conservative Party talks with Labour on Theresa May's Brexit deal will "peter out" within days, according to a leading Tory.

Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbenchers, said today that he found it "very hard to see" how the talks "can lead to any sensible resolution".

"If the customs union is agreed without a second referendum then half the Labour Party won't vote for whatever comes through regardless, and if a customs union is agreed then most of the Conservative Party isn't going to support it," he told the BBC's Week in Westminster programme.

"So, I can't see that is a very productive route to follow."

He added that he suspected "it will peter out in the next few days without having come to any significant conclusion".

Another round of negotiations are planned for next week, however the parties are yet to make any significant progress.

Earlier this week Labour MPs called for the party to pull out of the "toxic" talks within days, warning of “fury” among MPs and Labour members.

The negotiations were branded a “millstone around the necks” of the party’s candidates for the European elections in less than two weeks’ time.

I mooted Dominic Raab on here a couple of days ago. I still think he’d be a good choice.

Honestly though, If you think about it, Theresa May tried a 'placate both leavers and remainers' approach in her attempt to hammer out a WA. And just look what it did for her career...

The insane thing is Corbyn is copying her.

GabriellaG54 Thu 09-May-19 18:40:20

The thing is that most of you are shutting all the doors.
Any worthy recommends?
It's no good giving your views on the unsuitability of XY and Z without at least saying who has the credentials to pass muster.

Riverwalk Thu 09-May-19 18:22:56

The sheer hubris of Esther McVey thinking she's in with a chance!

Bring her on I say grin

Reminds me of previous desperate Tory times when Ann Widdicombe got big ideas.

maryeliza54 Thu 09-May-19 18:03:33

I agree that nowhere is the real UK Cal but the Tory membership is not representative of the overall population - it is whiter, older, maler, straighter, middle classer, southerner
