Horrified by Alabama Abortion law

jura - I agree, and having access to free, easy, widespread and confidential contraception should be the norm. Unfortunately, that isn't the reality for millions of women, and it's not simply about contraception at point of entry. Sex and relationship education needs to start from a very early age so that children grow into adulthood knowing that they have choices and knowing what coercive relationships look like, and a huge amount needs to be done to address the power imbalance between men and women.

Abortion is a fact of life. It will not stop simply because some religious zealots of the right wing variety attempt to pass further laws to control women. What's happening in Alabama is abhorrent - it will only stop safe abortion, nothing more.

Having the right to control one's own body shouldn't a battle.
I think agnurse and those like her haven't been given a hard enough time. I'm raging that this issue has reared its ugly head again.

Why do you feel I don't have the right to defend an unborn child. Why do you feel you have the right to kill a baby that is growing inside you. No. You don't own it. When it is born you can't do as you like with it. Because you don't own it.

And if there were to be a war, there would be fighting in each and every state, including the Southern States, since there are Red and Blue supporters in each- Although one section of the country supports overturning Roe v. Wade, even that section doesn't have full support-

Your view means that some dictator comes along and insist she sustains a foetus that cannot independently sustain itself. What if it was that dictator who would die unless joined to another body which could sustain him? What if your body was the only one that could do that? Does he have the right to force you to do it? Or do we accept that you have autonomy?

How bloody sad. Seems to me the rights of women seem to be under attack on all sides.

Since the 70s I know some things are better for women but we have radical Christians and Muslims now interfering in abortion rights and the whole sale embracing of the bloody ridiculous burka and as a feminist I do think it’s utterly ridiculous!

We have the voiciferous trans community slowly eroding what it actually is to be a woman with the nonsense of self ID.

I think we need to be very very aware of what is happening here.

I haven't read all the posts - there are too many energywise, but based on what I did manage to read I think agnurse was given a very hard time. I do disagree re sex being purely for procreation. It is actually, but we get pleasure from it too. So why not. Perhaps though females should be more selective about when they indulge in that pleasure. Keeping sex for after marriage isn't such a bad idea. Perhaps they should say no more often. Sex isn't that important. (Yes I know it's not always easy and thats only part of the problem))

Life starts from conception. Proabortionists are very abusive of those who disagree with them. As if no one else is entitled to an opinion.
Of course there are times when it's difficult to choose eg if a woman's life is in danger, or she has been raped or the baby is not going to survive. And I would hate to be in that situation. But not wanting the baby, not the right time, etc are not good reasons for abortion. Nor is the risk associated with illegal abortions.
Yes, a woman should choose what she does with her body but not with another body. She does not own the baby who is developing inside her. And what about the father's rights?

Society has a duty to protect the unborn child.
If there are problems with caring for unwanted children then society needs to address the issues around that. There are problems with caring for old people. Should we all just be killed?
And to say to someone "are you going to care for them all"is idiotic.
Demanding abortion is not the answer to the problem.

Mycatsahacker - thanks for your apology for comment. I do think you misread me here- I am 100% for choice, and will never ever judge anyone for having an abortion, especially at 17 ....

100% for choice- but also 100% for responsibility for one's sex life and reproduction. Anyone who has had 2 or 3 abortions should surely be made aware of their responsibilities visa poor contraceptive choices. Also concerned that women who take after sex pill on regular basis, put their health at risk too- and would be much better with effective contraception. But ... for another thread. I am totally against this abhorrent Alabama law, totally 100% for choice - but ... feel that in this day and age, in our culture and society - effective contraception with responsibility for both sexes, should mean thart abortions are rare events.

There are about estimated 36 couples waiting to adopt every 1 baby placed for adoption.

There are tens of thousands of children and young people in care because no one wants to adopt ,why keep topping up the misery and ongoing mental issues caused by life in care when it can all be erased before ...long before that embyro is a "baby" Are YOU volunteering to care for them all.provide for them all AND give the counselling needed for the mothers forced to continue with pregnancies they didn't plan?

I can't believe anyone is defending this appalling law! This is depriving women of the right to decide what happens to their body.

I l think that each baby/child/person deserves to have a mother that wants them.
The harm of not being wanted goes very deep.

So I believe that a woman has the to have the right to choose and while it is a sadness, it is much better to be a wanted baby/person than to be born and not wanted.

That Alabama has passed this law has made me afraid that women's rights are already vulnerable again. I have sometimes thought that many young women do not appreciate just how recent women's rights have been won. And therefore might be fragile.

Iam64 I cannot imagine any woman using abortion as a way of contraception.

In the U.K. the morning after pill is readily available in most High Street Chemists, if this was available worldwide to rape victims, or after drunken sex (not condoning but it happens) or even condom failure, the need for abortions would in my opinion be a lot less.

These women and young girls (children) need a "safe place" to go maybe at school, college or a birth control clinic. A place where they are not judged, made to feel dirty or guilty.

They want Roe v wade to be brought before the Supreme Court so that the ruling from 1973 to be revisisted again. It would take much to have the constitutionality of it to be overturned.

For those against legal abortion, surely the point is that no-one is going to force them to undergo terminations? Just because something is legal does not make it compulsory, I choose not to do lots of things that are not illegal. My husband used to be a rock climber - perfectly legal pursuit - but not for me, thank you.

That poor girl in Ireland died from mismanaged sepsis. An abortion wasn't necessary.

The woman in question contracted sepsis because her doctors felt unable to remove the pregnancy - which was unsustainable anyway - because the foetus still had a heartbeat. Sepsis is incredibly difficult to treat, and virtually impossible if the cause of the sepsis can't be removed.

Their parents still have their parental rights. They haven't relinquished them. A child can't be placed for adoption unless the parents relinquish their rights.

Yes, they can. Courts have the power to release children for adoption.

I, aged about nineteen at the time and a student nurse, nursed a young woman from a very religious family. She had become pregnant (no pill in those days) and tried to abort herself using a ruler (no legal abortions in hose days either). Infection caused her to go into renal failure and she died a horrible, painful death. Any naive objections I had then to legal abortions, went straight out of the window.
